  1. Ignore the trainers comment. Some people are just plain rude and want to bring others down. You'll get those on the cruise, best to steer clear of those.

Rude definitely not. Not my style.

Flippant, maybe even facetious - yes.

  2. An insurance claim can run into 10s of thousands even for a minor injury, and millions for a death. You must have a huge drive!

Under the terms of the rental agreement, the owner of the driveway is not liable for these. Not sure why I need a huge driveway  As for my driveway, I had a two-car private drive that was covered by CCTV which in itself was a selling point. I have moved house in the last year and although I still have a two-car driveway I no longer rent it out as it is impractical where I now am.

When I rent, I look very carefully at the area and whether it is overlooked and has natural surveillance or better still, a working CCTV set up.

As it is, in October this year the space I have rented is surrounded by natural surveillance, is hidden from the adjacent residential road and has CCTV as well - all for under £60. The taxi fare to the terminal is £6.

The cheapest quote I got at the time for cruise parking was I believe £187 from CPS and £147 from one of the others (Parking4cruises maybe?) Quite a difference. Like I say, more money for my wife to spend

  3. Each to their own. The amount I've saved over the years of using Parkatmyhouse.co.uk (and the money I've earned from renting my own as I live 10 mins from Gatwick) would easily pay for any damage if it occurred and the insurance company didn't pay up. I think they would be hard pressed to refuse though.

  4. I need complete dark to sleep properly. And if I left it on during the day the Steward would surely switch it off if I was on a tour or otherwise engaged and could not get back.

I seem to recollect being on a ship where you had to put your ship card in a slot for the electric to work. So nothing could be left charging if you were out.

You are correct. In our case the cabin steward turned the light off each time. Oriana didn't have the card operated electricity. Don't know about the rest.

  5. I would still be very wary of parking on someones drive.

As you would have entered into a contract with that person (you have paid them money). If anything happened to your car (even if it was recorded on cctv) would your insurance be interested. Parking on a drive where no money changes hands , as they are a relative of whatever would be iffy enough ref insurance, but me feels they would not be interested at all if you had paid to park there.

Other people have queried about if they give you lifts to the terminal, Is their car insurance cover if anything happens.

I know people like a good deal, but having spent 100's or 1000's on the holiday, seems a cost cut too far . Entirely just my thoughts

I couldn't argue against you on this, and this discussion has been talked about in many previous threads. However I can only go from personal experience that I have used this method many times in the past for various activities and never had a problem - so far. My take on it is (and I have no feedback from an insurance company so cannot give a qualified answer) is that they prefer to have cars parked on a private driveway (normally your own at your own house) rather than a road or car park. So I'm hoping they would look kindly on someone parking there car on someone else's drive. But I'm probably wrong.

Would be interesting to hear if anyone had this problem in the past, although I have to say I'm still happy to use parkatmyhouse.co.uk

  6. I don't know about Azura, but I brought a multi-socket with me and a two pin adapter plug and charged ours in the main cabin. I found that the shaver socket in the bathroom automatically turned off when the bathroom light was off therefore anything needing a long charge like a toothbrush didn't get a full charge.

The multi socket was useful as there is only one free electric socket in the whole of the cabin and what with wanting to charge mobiles, tablets and camera batteries, we could do all this in one go if necessary.

  7. Hi

We have used a Parkat my house.com and has cost us £65 for 11 days!!

You park on someones driveway ours is about a 15 min walk from the port!!!!! You dont leave your keys - its the first time we will have done this so hopefully all will be well.

    Sean

We did this last time and have booked again for October. Very easy, secure (the parking space has CCTV) and to cap it all, cheap £48 last time & £59 this time.

Means extra spending money for the wife :(

  8. The air con broke down in the middle of the night in our inside cabin On Oriana. One call to the reception and they kindly brought along a fan to use.

Lo and behold, within a couple of hours, the air con was back working again.

Well done P&O for their very swift action.

Also for reference, the air con temperature was manually set in each cabin and we found was very comfortable once you got the hang of it.

  9. I have recieved an email from p&o saying the shore excursions are ready to view and book but the cruise personaliser is un available ? Has any one else had trouble with it?? We don't sail until Feb 2015 I know it's early is this a mistake do you think??

I've never yet had a problem with the Cruise Personaliser but then I use Opera as my web browser most of the time, but gather from a lot of posts here that some have.

Try clearing our your cache and try again, that may be the solution.

  10. But the waiter that gets you that glass of water sees nothing of your cruise fare or grats. He's fetching and carrying your water for no extra reward.

So if I go into a restaurant in town and want a glass of tap water, I have to go myself into the kitchen to fetch it myself, the waiter mustn't get it for me as he won't get paid for it?

    Absurd.

  11. I picked up the fridge magnet thingy on the 'First Time Cruisers' forum before we went on our first cruise last February. So I took some along with me and lo and behold, they did a fantastic job of keeping all my excursion tickets, Horizon and lord knows what on the walls and in a safe place.

  12. My wife drinks tap water the majority of the time. We never had a problem asking a waiter for this, sometimes on its own and sometimes with a drink order from myself.

We never felt guilty though as we paid the gratuities. As for saying that the waiters are only there for selling refreshments, how absolutely absurd. They are there, and get paid, to wait on you, hence the term 'waiter'. I haven't heard them being referred to as 'salesperson'.

  13. I've been used to AI for many years in hotels but always find the quality of the drinks abroad on AI are awful, there is certainly no incentive to drink!

I would be interested in AI on ships but could never persuade myself to pay the Thomson price as I would never drink anywhere near that amount (says me suffering from a hangover at the moment after a works outing last night!)

  14. Definitely don't buy cheap! Most organised tours provide the equipment in the price and all will be very well sanitized.

As a qualified scuba diver I would recommend lesson(s) from a local PADI centre who would be more than willing to help as there is a technique, they even do their own snorkelling course. It's easy but a bit of practice before you go would give you confidence and make it more enjoyable.

Afterwards, why not do a 'try dive'. Now that is a fantastic experience.

  15. I used the folded stapled method last time but it looks a bit tacky, although to be fair they did stay in place. I bought 8 'proper' label holders on Amazon for £10 now so the paper tickets just slip inside and look a bit neater.

  16. Has to be Hobgoblin , Spitfire or Speckled Hen every time.

I was cured of my lager fix a few years ago by my football buddies who were into real ale.

Its real ale all the time now wherever possible.

Apart from that and given no better choice, definitely Stella, never Carling - not in a million!

  17. Ha ha, richleeds - but yes, I have to agree that at the grand old age of 61, we choose first sitting as we enjoy going off to the 8 30 performances and then rounding the evening off with a nightcap afterwards and bed by midnight zzzz zzzz.

First sitting seemed the more popular one on adult only Oriana last week.

    Agree with these sentiments.

We chose first sitting deliberately although we aren't 'oldies' (we're early/mid fifties), we just don't like eating late. Port days may be a problem as you would need to be back on ship earlier than you might want to.

However we have chosen Freedom dining for our next two cruises as we wanted to be able to control our eating times ourselves.
