  1. In our cabin it was just the one 3pin socket. So yes take a multi socket extension, and yes cases go under the bed

Just back from our eventful 1st cruise on Oriana. There was one single socket that I could find in our cabin that was used by the kettle. I took the advise from this forum and used a multi socket extension for my bits and pieces and no, it was not confiscated.

Most suitcases do go under the bed but we found that our largest suitcase didn't fully fit under even though it wasn't particularly deep. Along with others, we put the empty case into the corridor outside and our cabin steward took it to a storage area.

  2. P & O state that if a ship is in Spanish waters or port, then 10% IVA (VAT) tax is added to all bar bills, Select Dining etc.

Does this apply to cruising around the Canary Islands bearing in mind that although they are Spanish, they have a special tax-free (reduced tax?) status from the rest of Europe?

  3. Good things about Getaway Fares?

Simple. It persuaded me, a cruise virgin, to give it a try. I have been trying to persuade my wife a few times over the years about giving it a go but she was more interested in swimming with the fish in the Red Sea every year. Now, because of the price we got on a Getaway fare we are now going for 14 days to the Canary Isles.

Okay, we have been to most of the Canary Isles many times in the past but decided that for the price (which has now gone up to virtually double for what we paid for it - still as a Getaway) it was worth taking the plunge.

We can't choose a cabin. Well what the hell, I can't choose a hotel room when I book a package holiday so whats the problem?

I'm going in less than 3 weeks time and am looking forward tremendously to it. If I don't like it I know what to do next time. On the other hand if I like it, it may make me book another cruise up (and to be fair I've already got my eye on one for next year which I can book on the ship if necessary before the 28/02/14 to get the extra OBS ;) )

  4. We are going on our first cruise in 4 weeks time but have just seen a similar cruise next January 2014. The basic price is more but you have OBS plus additional OBS making the price we paid this time actually more expensive.

We would normally wait until our first cruise ended to see if we enjoyed it before we thought of booking again, but this Select cruise (choice of cabin, shuttle buses etc.) is such a good price its made me very tempted.

Unfortunately the offer of the extra OBS ends whilst we are still on board the first cruise and therefore wouldn't make the cruise next year so attractive to book later.

So, do we take the plunge and book for next year only to find we don't like cruising? or do we leave it? Or can you book on board with the same incentives in place?

    Decisions, decisions!

  5. I'm sure this has been done to death by newbies like me, but can someone clarify the 'black tie' requirements on P & O ships.

It says on the P & O website that on the Black Tie nights, a dinner jacket or tuxedo can be worn. I have both a black dinner jacket etc. and variety of bow ties and a white tuxedo.

Are both of these acceptable on 'Black Tie' night? Or is it black only?

Can you wear different colour bowties (not novelty heaven forbid!) on 'Black Tie' nights?

  6. If you are with Virgin Media and have a landline phone package & a Virgin Mobile either iPhone or Android then you can download the SmartCall App which allows calls to be made over a land based wifi connection and uses you landline package for the calls.

Great call ('scuse the pun) Dragonless. Having read the various links, you don't need a Virgin mobile, any mobile network will work. Bet you have to pay to connect to the ships wifi though

  7. Having used 'www.parkatmyhouse' in the past to hire my drive out, I decided to use them again to hire a space in Southampton.

I've got a space on a private driveway, very close to the terminal for less then £50 for two weeks! That sounds a bargain to me.

  8. According to the O2 website, it is automatic unless you opt out. You can check this if you sign into your 'My O2' account. It comes up as one of the automatic 'boltons'.

  9. O2 has a Travel Package already set up on their mobiles....

Whatever you get up to on the continent, you'll pay just £1.99 for the days you use data with O2 Travel. No catch. No scary bill to keep you awake at night. And we'll even text you if you hit the daily limit.*

This is only on land though, not the ship.

  10. It's okay for you guys who are used to cruising. I'm about to go for our first cruise but have been spoilt by going on all-inclusive holidays for years now.

The drinks bill will I'm sure , hold me in fear on the last day :-(

    Teetotal anyone?
