1.
The side ones do have open balconies.

Honestly, 16001/17001 is the way to go. I was worried about having a solarium vs a balcony and found the solarium was more enjoyable and was used more by my family. I'm actually amazed that NCL doesn't charge a premium for these rooms.
I love the idea of an enclosed balcony. Actually, we were in one of the new owners suites on the Dawn in 2012 and had no balcony- just floor to ceiling windows which offered a better view than any balcony!!
  2.
On Epic, suites 16001 and 17001 are larger cabins. They are several feet wider. This is most noticable in the second bedroom. They also are almost a foot deeper than all other 2 bedroom suites. The solariums are larger than other 2 bedroom balconies and all other frontal solariums too. The solariums provide a fantastic forward view and 16001 and 17001 have very large solariums. There are several photos posted here and youtube. Just do a thread search for 16001

I booked 16001 thanks to your past photo review :)
  3. Hello 2boyzmom!

We were on the 12/22-12/29 sailing of the Breakaway and were in the Haven. We had breakfast there just about everyday - we could order a warm dish off the menu, but there was also a buffet available with fruit, yogurt, danish, cereal, variety of bread with cheeses, cold cuts and smoked salmon.

There were no specials for dinner - it was the same menu every day. A kids menu is available - it is the same kids menu for any restaurant on the ship. Our son (9) took advantage of that!

    Enjoy your cruise!

    Thank You!

  4. We (Me, DH, DD (10), DD(8) are currently booked in a 2 bedroom Haven Suite. My question is... should we switch to an owners suite??? 17004, 17007, 170032 & 170035 are available. I'm confused if these suites have solarium (which i would not like) or open air balconies. Please HELP! Thank you!

We are on the same cruise with you in a 2 bedroom haven. Believe me- that second bedroom is needed with two kids. See you soon :)

  5. for BMG there is a "haven" section. However, if you would like to sit somewhere else, you are welcome to do so. We wanted front row, get wet, wear plastic seats, so when our concierge escorted us in, we went to the front. Other Haven guests sat in the 4th row or so - they didn't want to wear plastic, but didn't want to sit off to the side where the Haven section is.

There's always a suite section for shows in the theatre and you're escorted by your concierge. If you go early, you'll get your choice of sets. If you go closer to showtime, there's a section for Haven guests.

Thank you! Yes- the kids want front row :)

  6. Both are western routes to belize, honduras & cozumel. We are looking for an aft, either suite or balcony.

The aft suite on the Dawn was deep enough that we actually sat out during the rain with no problem. Would like that type of cover again if possible.

Well DMH15 (aka Donna) had the best aft cabin on the Sun when we sailed this past April on the Sun. We were in a forward suite and was no where near as nice as hers. Both ships are beautiful and Ildagio is absolutely beautiful to dine in for breakfast and lunch as a suit perk on the Sun. Enjoy either one!!

  7. Looking at cruises for next November and because of my hubby's football schedule have narrowed it to the Jewel out of Houston or the Sun out of Tampa. Just off the Dawn and would love to do that ship again but the dates don't work.

Also any info on the balconies would be appreciated. Both look to not have as much overhead coverage as the Dawn. I love being able to sit out rain or shine.

I have been on both- what kind of cabin are you looking for? What are the ports?

  8. Agree- it all depends on where I'm going and the cruise critic reviews. We did a private tour in Curacao of the west side of the island that was amazing. On the other hand, we went to Jost Van Dyke on a NCL excursion which was fantastic and cheaper than a private charter or ferry to get there. Overall I look for no crowds and convenience and no stress!!!
