My husband and I did 30 cruises on Princess and he died of cancer. I'm thinking of booking a shorter cruise and test the water since I really enjoyed cruising and listening to the water while sitting on the balcony. The only drawback is Princess doesn't have any single rooms you have to pay double. I'm concerned about feeling alone in a pond of doubles. I've heard go on tours get active on the ship. Any suggestions out there. Thanks appreciate any help

My husband passed in 2012.  Did my first solo cruise in 2015.  Loved it!  The freedom to do what I wanted to on the ship and on land was awesome!  I did choose to join other people at dinner.  I did walk up every night. And then and in cruises since then I've met some wonderful people.  Don't' be afraid to go.  There will be times you feel lonely, but immerse yourself in the activities onboard and enjoy!

  2. Um, I'm still unclear on walk up to the dining rooms.  Can you still just walk up and get a table?  I travel solo and normally eat at 5 so I can go join in the evening time activities after.   Will I need to make a reservation for 5?  I mean, if I meet people and we want to meet another evening for dinner it may be later than 5.  Could we still just walk up and get a table? I don't mind waiting a little bit.   All this talk of reservations is confusing me as I have never made a reservation for MDR before.  But having said that, I haven't cruised since 2019.

We did a connosieur tour for Alaska and was great.

Dinners were included including a tour director who travelled with us and handled any issues.

We went way into Denali would say at least 50 miles, could have hopped onto another bus to go the rest of the way but we chose not to.

Was expensive but glad we did it.

I'm looking into doing the connosieur tour for Alaska.  I've done the Denali Explorer tour twice.  But wanted to try the connosieur.  So in your opinion it's worth it?

That's obvious. My point in general is that there should be a better balance of availability between bookings and walk ups, like there used to be. Essentially on Coral it seemed like if you didn't book they couldn't really help you.

In my past cruises there was a reservation only MDR and  a walk up MDR.  I've never waited more than a couple of minutes for a table in walk up MDR.  I'm on a cruise.  Tonight I may want to eat early.  Tomorow night I may be tired from my excursion and go to my room and crash and not make it to MDR at my usual early time.  There needs to be a balance between reservations and walkups I agree.  And I think the reservation dining room and a separate walk up sounds great.

The sundaes I didn't care (I'd rather get the free soft serve cone actually) for but the chocolate cake is very good. They are also very large so my wife and I would share one. We had a package so the cakes were free but they were only $4.50 compared to the $12 sundaes. I can't imagine eating 2 of those sundaes every day for 7 or 14 days.

Ooh, no, not every day!  Sugar overload!

  6. Well, looks like I won't be getting the premium desserts as I am lactose intolerant and have an intolerance to chocolate also.  I know! My life is horrible!  LOL!  However, I know I will find plenty to eat on the ship!  Thank you all for answering!  Happy Cruising!

  7. Webb Pierce, I know I'm late to the party and I hope you had a great cruise.  I did my very first ever cruise solo to Alaska in 2015.  Land/cruise tour.  Had a blast and made some great friends I'm still in touch with today.   Hope you had a wonderful time on your trip! Never be afraid to travel alone!  BTW, I'm from West Monroe, Louisiana where the singer Webb Pierce grew up about three miles from where I did.    Happy Sailing!

  8. To anyone trying to decide to cruise solo or not, go for it!  I did my first solo cruise three years after my husband died.  My first cruise ever! I did land/cruise Tour of Alaska.  Love it!  I have since done New England/Canada and another Land/cruise tour of Alaska.  Made good friends and had a blast all three times.  I am currently looking at cruises for next year.   Solo is freedom to do as you wish and want to.  I always ate in MDR sitting with others and met some really nice people.  I saw the shows, and anything that I, key word I, wanted to do.  I say go! If your attitude is you will have fun, you will!

I'll be sailing on her in September 2022 (transatlantic CPH to BOS).  I'll make sure they shine her up for you.  🙂

Wow, you'd do that for me?   You are the best!   🤣    I did not mean to sound uppity in my post.  I'm not.  I've sailed on two older ships and thought they were great!  Had wonderful cruises!  I've also sailed on new ships and also had a great time.  I only inquired because a friend sailing with me hates older ships.  Well, she probably isn't going anyway now, so I'm still going and plan on having fun!  But I loved your answer, Another_Critic!  I love sarcastic humor!

  10. I've been reading where she's a bit older and maybe not as good of shape as other ships.  Should I have booked a different ship?  I'm sailing out of Boston for the New England/Canada cruise.    Myself and two friends are going.  We each booked our own cabin as we all have different sleep patterns and would just annoy the you know what out of each other.

  11. No.  Because when I got sick I thought it was sinuses and I felt so bad I just crawled in bed and slept.  And my steward brought me hot water to drink because I could not get warm.  I stayed in my cabin for two days.  Never came out.  Then my fever was gone and I was feeling slightly better So i came out for the last day of the cruise.   I'm the type person that only goes to the doctor after I've tried all home remedies and rest.  LOL!  As my mom says I'm stubborn!

Sept was pretty early, but you never know.  You might be able to get an antibody test, even thought they aren't known to be really accurate.  I know they are available for $10 in many locations.  It might not tell you if you had CoVid on the ship but, it might tell you if you've had it in the past ... if the antibodies are still traceable.  I know, a lot of 'ifs' ... but, could be interesting.

No, I'm not taking any test yet.  I don't trust them.  LOL!  I was just curious.  And yes, September was early, but I have read where they have found cases around then.  So,,,,,,,,, plus there were a few other reasons that I suspect COVID.   Ah well, I healed!  Even if the last part of the trip was miserable.  Hopefully I can return in the near future.

  13. I was wondering if anyone else on this trip got sick?  I did the land tour first and then the cruise.    I came down sick five days after this tour started.  Chills, fever, lethargy, cough.  Stayed sick for over a month with this.  Anyone else?  I'm curious. Thinking it was COVID.  Wondering if anyone else had symptoms.  On a side note, Day 1 I started feeling bad I stayed in my cabin.   I wasn't wanting to infect anyone no matter what I had.
