On the Meraviglia now just about in New York.  The wifi has been painfully slow - the worst I've ever had.  It was better when we were still in Europe but terrible in North America. Pictures simply wont load. This is the first time today that cruise critic would actually load. Hopefully it improves.

Hi Carol! I am looking out my office window at the ship right now. Has the speed increased now that you are in "The New World"? Will be boarding tomorrow.

You log into the MSC hotspot (https://login.mscwifi.com/hotspotlogin.php ) using the browser on your laptop or mobile device. The usage is displayed on the log-in screen. While still connected you can go back to the log-in screen , refresh and check the usage. We used 4GB with 2 devices and purchased additional 2GB during 7-night cruise on Meraviglia.

Thank you Sir Wolf! This is actually the first time I am getting WiFi as the cost seems very reasonable for a 10 night sailing. [Otherwise I just check email in ports]

You still don't understand.  The PIN is for cash advances – when you use this credit card at an ATM.  It's a very bad idea, because the bank charges you a high interest rate from the day you take the cash – as opposed to using a debit card at an ATM where they just take the cash from your own account.

You are sooooo right. I don't understand.

I don't understand why the bank would send me a pin after I talked to a live person and explained exactly what I needed the card for...and NOT for cash advances.  That I needed the PIN for use in a Metrocard machine abroad and to register it for the cruise I was going on at a kiosk that on the cruise line's website says it will ask for a PIN. I could not have been clearer to the customer service person. I never do cash advances....ever.

So you are right...I don't understand ---> Why the bank would waste my time giving me a "Fake" PIN.

Let us know if you're ever able to use that Chase visa PIN in a non-cash advance situation.  My understanding is that it isn't a real PIN for credit card charge purposes.

We'll find out! But then why would they send me a PIN number for my card in the mail and go through all of that if it is not going to work? Just to placate people? That would be Silly! But then....isn't that the world we live in!!!!

American Express , Discover and Chase (Visa) don’t offer Chip-and-Pin credit cards. That is unfortunate but I have called and done some research. But even without PIN the credit cards can be used with signature while traveling abroad.

I have a Chase visa with chip and I got a pin by calling and they snail mailed me a pin. When traveling 2 years ago I found that the Metro Card machines in Madrid at the airport required a pin and I had to use Euros to get that metro ticket.

Greetings. MSC newbie here sailing on the Seaside in November. I need to "register" my credit card within the first day, and MSC states a PIN number will be required. Does that apply to a credit card? (I know it will apply for a debit card).

Thanks for your assistance, and any other helpful hints.

    Kevin

If you want to play it safe...contact your credit card company and you can register a pin. Then either way you'll have no problem. It's one of those things that people complain about and now that we are aware we can be prepared.

  7. The zoo actually seems very small when you first get there...but once you start exploring it is bigger than it seems. There are a lot of paths to follow and there are birds roaming free all around...Peacocks and pure white Peacocks...Victoria Crowned Pigeons, Parrots. They also have Trumpeter Horn Bills! And a few large cats too....lion type cats I mean! You can feed the Lories in their flight cage and there is the Flamingo parade show in the little amphitheater. You should look up the times of these things before you go so you can time your visit right!

Sure  This is from tripadvisor can get on the #10 jitney for $1 each and it takes about 5 mins. You get off by the Fish Fry and hang a left up the road. Just follow the signs.

If the weather is nice and you want to walk...when exiting the pier you go to the right and follow Bay Street. Left onto Chippingham....then there should be a sign about 2 blocks down. Let's see if the Google Maps Link stays when I publish this. The #10 Jitney would drop you off on Chippingham also. Remember they drive on the other side! Don't miss the Flamingo show!

Traveling from port  to Ardastra Gardens and zoo in nassau, taking local bus to the zoo, then walking short distance to zoo after bus stop

My question did you feel safe doing this?

    Hi!

I do this every time we stop in Nassau! I think we've been there three times. We have taken the jitney AND we have walked. It's not too far , but if it is hot out....well...  I don't know why the ships don't have an excursion there?

It's not sad.  Every year as far back as I recall, I've ordered myself a my OWN birthday cake :)  Regardless if I received one from someone else.  That means two cakes!  I actually plan to pre-order my birthday cake (the anniversary cake), for my MSC cruise next year because it looks better than the birthday cake they have advertised on their website, and it comes with a sweet flavored wine and glasses.

Thank you..that is very sweet to say.  Howard

I’m currently on the MSc Seaview and celebrated my 47th whilst on board. My wife ordered the cake during dinner which was great as the waiters arrive banging drums and singing Happy Birthday. When I used my cabin card during the day, it comes up on their system so people were congratulating me all day.

Best thing to do is grab a member of the entertainment team on the day, they will have him doing the dancing and games. He will love it

Hi mj9....when you say it came up on your cabin card that it was your birthday....is it just in the system because everyone needs to input their birthday or was it filled in on some form that there was a special occasion?

I'm traveling solo on the Meraviglia on October 8th and my birthday is the 9th...ordering a cake for myself would be kinda sad, aye? LOL

We'll be on Meraviglia for 23 nights in YC from Oct 18th next;  I'll probably post menus and photos of food, etc, (though it may not be a 'Live' report) so you'll get some idea of what to expect.

Beamafar...I'm going to be debarking as you embark on the 18th! If I see you we can bark at each other!

Here's a question: What is the cruise staff demographic like on MSC? Is it mainly Italian i.e. the stewards, kitchen staff, wait staff, etc...? I am guessing it is NOT similar to lines like Carnival/Princess/Royal...etc...

My internet came with my package and my e-tickets printed out a voucher page. I would go into your account and print out new e-tickets and see if its there, if not I would call now and straighten it out.

    Pat

The only thing I hadn't done was put my picture in the web check-in...when I did that it automatically resent my e-tickets and there was the internet voucher!

    Howard

  14. So when you purchase all these things pre-cruise...when you print your e-ticket there is a voucher page for each purchase.

THEN I added a Wifi package [I booked pre "All-In" promotion] and when I looked at my e-tickets again it was not added.

Does the Wifi package not get a voucher? Or is this the first pre-cruise snafu that I have had?

MSC does not heavily discount port days as much as US lines, plus you have the 15% surcharge built in.  You can get quite a few different 30 and 50 minute massages ahead of time for under $80, for example, and no surcharge.

Would you then tip after the massage if you booked pre-cruise and paid no surcharge?

  16. I pre-bought a 50 minute deep tissue sports massage for $77. I've never seen a price on any cruise line that low. You can't beat that on land in the New York area...even if they add gratuity on it. And it is less expensive than the Swedish and other 50 minute massages...I don't know why? [I don't know if spa prices vary ship to ship]

I haven't seen that word used, it usually says "a variety".  The name seems to be a gimmick with the design of the cones.

Something I'm finding it hard to get my head around is the name of the coffee shop "The Smiling Fish".  Sounds more like somewhere where you'd get fishn'chips and not coffee and ice cream.

And they will have HUNDREDS of kinds of ice cream, not just a few but HUNDREDS!

Here is a photo of 11384. If you are booking a studio for 1 person these are the ones to grab!

Definitely 2 people although they would have to be good friends!

Thanks for the picture! It is the first REAL picture I have seen instead of an artist's rendering. What is above the bed? Is that a virtual window? If so...it needs to be cleaned! LOL
