We just took a Lyft from Bush yesterday.  $71.00 to Galveston and same guy is going to meet us at the Port the 21st when we return to take us back.

That is illegal and the driver will be subject to arrest if caught in the act. He will not be driving under the Lyft umbrella at that point. It's now just a ride with some guy.

Are there any hotels not right on the island that have shuttles to the port? Looking for the one Saturday night before our cruise and the hotels on the island are pretty booked up.

Galveston Express does an island transfer for $10 per person from any hotel. You can reserve it through the website.

That was back in 2015/2016.  Texas state laws have been changed since then so cities can no longer make decisions like that and nowadays Uber and Lyft are allowed at the Port of Galveston.

You are misinformed. This is a present-day situation. Prior to this Spring, Uber and Lyft have not been paying the same tolls as everyone else. It is only just recently that the law has finally caught up with them. The Texas law has no bearing on port tolls. These drivers have been skirting the toll for years and the Port of Galveston was finally told to stop allowing them into the port without proper permitting and tolls.

On one hand you say "charges access tolls to everyone but the rideshare companies".

On other hand you say  "who are not properly permitted and paying the proper tolls".

Are you saying the port is not enforcing the law until today ?

How are the Rideshare's charged ?

I don't know yet if they have begun charging these drivers but I do know GPD has informed them they must.

That is correct, rideshares have not been paying tolls at all. The rides are already subsidized by investor dollars and on top of that they don't even pay the same tolls as everyone else.

I believe that is old "news".  The State Legislature in 2017 preempted local authority ftom banning ride share companies.  Uber is readily available in Galveston.

It's new actually. The Port is a government entity and charges access tolls to everyone but the rideshare companies. Today the taxi inspector was literally standing in the middle of the road stopping rideshare drivers who are not properly permitted and paying the proper tolls.

  6. It should be fine as long as you don't plan to take an Uber/Lyft to or from the actual cruise terminal. The Galveston Police Department has cracked down on the Port of Galveston for allowing rideshare companies to enter the port without paying the same tolls as everyone else. They are ticketing drivers and making arrests for repeat offenders.

Uber/Lyft has run wild for the past two years in Texas but it's beginning to catch up to them.

    Hi all,

We are traveling with our twin four-year-olds and are trying to figure out how to get from the airport to our hotel near Galveston. My first thought was an Uber, until I realized we would not have car seats. What have other people done in this situation?

Sorry if this is been posted before but I wasn’t able to find anything answering these questions. Thanks in advance!

Galveston Express provides booster seats upon request but not carseats. This might be an option for you if your children are big enough to use them.

I'm leaving in February and seeing a way better price for my large group of 12 with Galveston Limousine than Express and a smaller business too, like not comparable better ($700 something vs $400 something).  Off to other spots to see reviews of this company.  Like many others here, weighing these options are difficult because I really just want to rent a car and leave it at the port all week and be the master of my own domain.  But, I have a group of 12 who probably aren't willing to spend as much as I am for convenience.

You must be comparing a one-way fare to a round-trip fare. I can't imagine you would get a large van for a group of 12 for $200 each way. Can you verify?

Trying to narrow down options for cruise in April and would appreciate any advice. Myself and my teenage daughter will need to get from Galveston back to IAH. We have a flight after 2 pm so trying to kill time on the ship and not the airport. Curious how the Carnival shuttle works? Do you have an assigned time/bus? Do you get your own luggage and put on the bus yourself? If anyone has done this and would share details I would appreciate it. I would rather pay a little more and not have to sit and wait at the port etc... Thanks!

Galveston Express offers luggage storage in their office which is about three blocks from the port entrance. You can leave your luggage there and spend some time downtown at the shops and restaurants before taking a later shuttle to the airport.

I have reserved an Avis from Texas City (18 miles North of the port) for $26 all in for the day of debarkation. Hope to take an Uber (estimates show $28- $30) to pick up the car. Even if i have to take a $50 cab it still should be my best option because we have a later flight so we plan to visit NASA and kill some time. Otherwise shuttle service or a straight uber fare would be better. I just don't want to spent 6 or more hours at the airport. This is our first time to sail from Galveston. I hope that it is not our last, but so far with the added expense and logistics of transferring  from the airports and the lack of direct flights from my home airport to Houston makes Miami and FLL cruises look like a much better value.

Galveston Express sometimes offers a shuttle to NASA depending on the size of your group. They usually put you on the first shuttle of the day and then pick you up later in the afternoon for the ride to the airport. www.galvestonexpress.com

  11. Thank you for the review. That is a really sketchy operation it sounds like. If what you are saying is true then they have vehicles that are not permitted to be in the Port and subsequently are not paying the proper port access fees everyone else is paying. His drivers are not going through the proper permitting process with the City of Galveston where they are drug tested and a background check is done. His drivers will be subject to arrest if they are caught doing this and then you will need to find and pay for alternative transportation.

It goes without saying those vans are probably not commercially insured either so you will be left high and dry in the event of an accident.

This explains the price difference though from his professional competitors. You just have to ask yourself if this gamble is worth the $5 savings.

  13. Thank you again for all the advice, SSB. You have been a wealth of information. At least I now have an approximate idea of how to get around so I won't be the typical clueless tourist, looking like a deer stuck in headlights.

My DW & DD will have the Google Maps and Waze GPS apps going so we'll be getting real-time - and probably conflicting - traffic updates.

What exactly is a DW & DD?

  14. Galveston is flat as a table top, a pumping station won’t help. Other than hurricanes the street flooding to the point of interference with cruise travel has happened twice in about two decades. It just hit close to the same dates.

This fall has been one of the wettest on record, we’ve had more days with measurable rain than not, and the ground is saturated. The first day of flooding for the Valor departure there were monitoring stations on Pelican Island that recorded over 4” of rain in a short amount of time. No one was left behind, the departure was delayed until all passengers were safely aboard.

We had some minor street flooding on Saturday. The water made parts of Harbourside impassable. Three other routes to the cruise terminals and dry parking were all open.

All these are inherent risks of cruising from sea level. We’d love to move our little harbor here to the Austin hill country, but the sailing to international water would take a while.

Carnival is hot on Galveston, there are over sixty-thousand hotel rooms that cater to a heavy drive-up audience.

In the words of the immortal Sgt Hulka, “lighten up Francis.”

    .

I believe a pumping station actually would work. It's worked in Australia where they have turned an entire river inland to irrigate a desert. It's worked on the Big Thompson Project where water is pumped across the Rocky Mountains to the Western Slope. Those projects cover miles and kilometers of inhospitable terrain. In Galveston, a pump would just need to push the water as little as a quarter mile out into the harbor. There is no need to wait for gravity to have its effect, the city can take matters into its own hands.

They may not have every detail quite finalized but the Port of Galveston has already placed for bid a contract to build this new terminal. That was actually a few months ago. I am sure they have already selected a builder by now.

The port has also placed for bid a contract to build a 3,000 space parking garage to be built over one or more of their current parking lots without interrupting the functions of the parking lot on the ground level.

  16. This is my first attempt to put together a comprehensive price list for shared-shuttle services and cruise-line transfers between Orlando (MCO) Airport and Port Canaveral. All input is welcomed. I am sure I am missing someone, if so please let me know.

  17. We will be flying into Orlando to get on the Breeze in March. I have been on the Breeze once before with the family. It sailed out of Miami then.

How long does it take to get to the port? Do you rent a shuttle or Uber it?

You might also try Globetrotter Transit (http://www.globetrottertransit.com). They are actually Galveston Express but are expanding into Orlando to serve cruise passengers there.
