  1. We had a really easy time getting around Copenhagen via public transportation. Our cruise originated from Copenhagen, so we went with a Copenhagen Card, which includes public transport, a canal cruise and entrance to Tivoli along with other attractions. You might want to price out this option: http://www.copenhagencard.com/whats-included

Also, please note that Tivoli is especially lovely at night (not sure how cold it would be in December) with all the lights in the summer.

Thanks, I had discounted buying this card due to the cost, but I've had a rethink and will now get it. It will give us flexibility if the weather is poor and we change our minds. Unfortunately the cruise ship leaves (I think) at 6pm so we can't be at Tivoli in the evening, really frustrating, esp so here at Copenhagen as we then have 2 sea days before Amsterdam (to allow for Christmas Day I assume) but I'm sure they could have allowed a few extra evening hours :(

I have time to buy this and get it delivered to home. I'm not sure I want the hassle on the day of finding somewhere to pick it up. Where did you buy yours from? (I realise you may have been at a different port)

Thanks for all your advice everyone.

  2. Thanks for this info. I've just double checked the port sites and we're coming in at Langelinie near to the 'Little Mermaid' so it's good to have googles estimate of timings confirmed :)

I think we'll walk up to Tivoli via Nyhavn, maybe do a canal tour and then maybe find a bus or taxi back from Tivoli (in good time) to town or the little mermaid area. We're both okay at walking the distance, so long as it's not dreadful weather (when we'll have a rethink!) Seems we don't need to purchase the Tivoli ticket in advance, so thanks for this info.

Shame we're in on the 23rd as it appears all the Christmas markets (bar Tivoli) close the day before on the 22nd! You'd think the organisers would wait an extra day to capitalise on a few thousand extra tourists!

I would have considered the hoho buses for ease, but looking at tripadvisor the Copenhagen ones are slated...

  3. Hi

At Copenhagen on a Christmas cruise. I understand it's close and easy to walk to Tivoli from the port. But...

Is there any advantage to buying tickets online and in advance, or wait until the day/see what the weather is like?! We're there on a Tuesday so not the Fri to Sun when it appears (looking online) that they charge more at the gate...

    Any opinions gratefully received :)

  4. Thanks. After sending the above, the labels in the book arrived in the post just a few mins ago! Typical Murphy's law!

But yes, I do have to print out the tickets (which is fine) the arrival time is not though  as we have to travel a long way, but that's a conversation for another very long thread :(

  5. We booked our first p&o cruise (select fare) months back, for Christmas. I now keep getting emails reminding me to print etickets/luggage labels.

I'd prefer to receive these in the post. I vaguely remember people on here saying not to go into this section on the cruise personalised in order to get them posted. Do p&o still post them out?

I'd prefer stronger luggage labels than flimsy printer paper ;)

    Thanks

  6. I know your post was 3 months ago, so this may be too late; but I was on the Ioffe back in 2008, but down to Falklands, S.Georgia and Antarctica. She's a lovely vessel and felt very safe in the Drake shake...

    What info did you need?

  7. I am new to this kind of cruise (prev expedition vessel) We are on Aurora for our first cruise this coming Christmas and really looking forward to it. I don't mind 'formality' on Christmas Day (I come from a family where we always looked tidier for Christmas lunch) but smart, jacket only would be my preferred option for men and smart for us ladies if the meal were at lunch time, then smart casual for the evening.

However I agree, I would prefer to have the main meal at lunch time. My husband and I go for a short walk after lunch to walk off the meal slightly. It will be harder to do this after an evening meal, though we have chosen first sitting.

Oh and were in our 40s/50s so not in an older formal generation :)

  8. Thanks for all these ideas. I'll start keeping an eye out in the shops and online :) And I agree, if I happen to be under air-con I can freeze. I have now chosen a desk at work (we hot desk...) which has no air-con over it, for this reason. Also if we wish to brave the prom for a short time, it will be nice to have something to cover my arms that is suitable.

I'd never even heard the word bolero as clothing, so thank you!

  9. ok, silly question, but I really do not know the answer. What do you wear over your shoulders/arms for a bit more warmth when wearing a formal dress? I am not very worldly regarding dressy/formal wear., but I am getting better at dressing up and do enjoy it immensely, but I'm still learning. I love the occasional time I get to wear my gorgeous dresses, but I just go from car to restaurant, so haven't been in this situation.

I am off on our first cruise at Christmas (Baltic cruise) and wonder what I can put over any dress I currently have (Or may buy) to provide smart/formal extra warmth if I require it. I am in my mid /late 40s...

Please post photos where you can of ideas :)

    Thanks

  10. Thanks for this really useful info on Oslo. The ship will be in port on the 22nd December, and we recently saw the website for the Viking ship museum, which looks amazing and a must see place. I'll have a look and see if the folk museum market will be on too. I'd love to find a few decorations and gifts which are totally different to the UK. What do you mean by downtown Oslo? As the Sami tent sounds as though it's worth a visit for its uniqueness.

Thanks again, I appreciate it :)

  11. this is my first post (though I've been a lurker for a couple of years). I've searched the posts, but the search tool on my device often Returns 'page not found' and when I do get results from Google, they don't answer this question, so please no flaming me if you think otherwise :)

We (a couple) have just taken the plunge and booked on the P&O Christmas cruise (our first cruise) We love Christmas shops/markets, but don't want to do them to the exclusion of scenic tours.

In Gothenberg there's a trip which includes going to Liseberg, but only for an hour (despite the Liseberg website saying it opens at 1pm that day) which doesn't give long for wandering the atmosphere/shopping

There's also in Oslo a trip to Drobak, but looking online it seems there's only one Christmas shop. Is there anything else Christmassy about the place?

Just wondering whether one would be better than the other? Any opinions? :)

    Thanks
