  1. After cruising Carnival we tried HAL a little over a month ago. Definitely no kids there. The average age there was older than us by a lot (close to 80?), but no kids. I think there were only 10 kids on the cruise. I'm not sure what's worse, kids in the pool or old guys wearing all of there clothes AND SHOES into the pools. That was my cue to get out. When we sailed on the Liberty out of San Juan in December of 2015 I was in the adult aft pool on a port day. That is until the guy who had been drinking all morning went into the public restroom at the aft pool in his bare feet and proceeded to hop right in the pool. Again, my cue to exit the pool. Pools and hot tubs on the ships are sketchy at best regardless of who is on the ship. Have another drink and relax, head to a beach to get your water fix.

  2. College spring break was ending by then. My kids were on break starting the first and then second week of March. Could have been a different story a week or two earlier. We've sailed at the end of March on a 4 day and our experience was much like yours. Glad you had a good time.

  3. How much was the cab? And what beach was that to? We want to go to Arashi Beach and l know there are also buses..

The cab ride last month to Arashi was $25. I believe there is a limit of 6 passengers in a taxi. I could be mixing islands, but I believe that to be the case. I asked about getting a taxi for the trip back and was told to just go to the snack bar and they would call one. Wrong. They wouldn't call for us. Something about too many people find alternate travel and the cabbies would no longer drive up there to potentially get stiffed. We had already scoped out the bus situation and ended up taking the local bus back for $5.50 for both of us. The bus is a good alternative to a taxi going to or coming back from Arashi.

We just walked the city in Curacao and did our shopping there. Next time we want to hit the beaches to snorkel.

  4. That's what a lot of the reviews said. I believe our tour heads out at 7:30 am. We'll probably get breakfast via room service that day to save some time.

We did this excursion last month. We received notice that due to the early departures room service would be very busy and slow. The recommendation was to eat at the buffet or MDR which was open early at 6:00AM.

  5. We were on the Zuiderdam in Feb of this year. Going through the canal was great. You do not actually start into the Canal until around 7:00 am but u will be able to see and watch other ships prior to that.

People get up early that day and the bow was packed. One word of caution: if it is sunny, it will get hot. With that said, Deck 7 has a forward facing public balcony like 5 and 6 but 7 IS Shaded for the most part!!!!! Great spot for watching.

After going through the locks we sat in Gatun Lake for at least two hours before going back. We went to Deck 3 and touched the wall on the way back. Going back you get a completely different view. Instead of being low and rising up, you are up and go down. Really cool getting both views.

We were on this cruise too. We watched from deck 5 forward as that's the deck our cabin was on. We got to the front around 7 or so. We probably touched the walls with you on promenade on the way back. The trip back through the locks began around 1:00PM. By then it was hot! Our aft cabin was a cool vantage point but man was it hot back there. On Promenade you could talk to the operators of the mules. That was interesting.

  6. Not sure what time you are in port but we just went to Arashi Beach when we were in Aruba a few weeks ago on a HAL cruise. The snorkeling was good there. The cab was $25 to Arashi. There are no cabs up there to come back. We took the local bus back to the port. We didn't snorkel in Curacao as the good beaches could be between 45 minutes to an hour away.

  7. My daughter, 29 at the time, and her cousin, 22 at the time, were frequently asked for their driver's licenses to gain entrance to adult venues in the evening.

The S&S card was not enough.

My husband and I were also asked to provide our driver's licenses to cash traveler's checks at Guest Services.

We stood our ground on that one. We demanded to speak to the supervisor who cashed the checks for us.

We also at that time, complained about the driver license checks for our daughter and niece.

No explanation was given for the requirement of additional ID proof of identity and age.

I second that I hope they ask for ID when cashing a check or traveler's check. Unfortunately there are enough people in this world that are opportunistic and less than trustworthy.

  8. Since we were staying in OSJ prior to our last cruise we had FTTF in San Juan and not sure that I would do it again. You do get your own line at check in, you get a priority line at the customer service desk, but that's about it. I'm not sure I agree with staggered check-in during a San Juan embarkation. It's so laid back and such a late departure that I'm not sure it's necessary. Both times we've sailed from San Juan the entire process has been smooth. I'm sure some have had experiences that were not this way, but this has been our experience.

  9. I've been wondering the same thing. Marine traffic shows a container ship in the pier/dock right there.

According to news reports this is the staging area for the evacuated passengers from the airport who don't have their own transportation at FLL. They are in need of transportation or lodging. They needed to get them out of the airport and this is where they have been moved to.

  10. We are taking the Fascination out of San Juan and a friend of ours told us that you can come and go as much as you want on embarkation day and bring a bottle of wine aboard each time. Anyone ever try this?

    Thanks!

You can get off and on as many times as you like. We only brought 4 bottles back doing that. Not sure how many you could do in a day. Good luck!

  11. I have booked a group cruise booked for my 50th birthday in 2018 and one of my friends was concerned about sailing on a smaller ship during hurricane season. Did you find the water was pretty smooth, a little choppy, or rough?

    Thanks.

The first time we sailed this itinerary it was in October. There was nary a ripple for the entire week. The weather couldn't have been better. We were stuck in San Juan and eventually Orlando due to Superstorm Sandy rolling up the eastern part of the US. We didn't finally make it home to Ohio until the following Wednesday.

  12. I just booked the Zuiderdam for the Feb 15th sailing. It had a significant price drop as well, which is why we chose to book this. The price drop was not as drastic as the Feb 5th sailing, but it fit as far as timing goes and reasonable airfare from the cold Great Lakes. We obviously booked within the final payment window as well so if there were to be additional price drops I doubt we would take an upgrade as we have booked an aft cabin. I called my TA to see if there were any perks to transferring the booking to her as far as OBC or any other incentives we may not be otherwise afforded. She informed me that according to HAL we are not eligible for OBC since we booked within the final payment window. First time on HAL. Hopefully more to come.
