  1. I'm sailing solo on Epic Saturday and have never sailed Getaway so I can't give pros and cons about each ship. I'm sailing on the Getaway TA in a balcony as a solo cruiser next fall and I picked it because of the waterfront and I wanted to try a different ship. I was very tempted to book the Epic TA but for me the Getaway TA seemed better.

  2. Can someone explain what the upsell process is? I booked an inside guarantee on the Breakaway for my Dec 18 sailing, and got put on deck 12 an I1 category. I'm sorta curious as to what the price would be for an upgraded room, but I have no idea what the upsell process is or how it works. Thanks in advance.

I called the upsell dept to try to get an upsell cabin. I was willing to pay the difference in price for a solo cruiser.

In your case and someone correct me if I'm wrong the Breakaway participates in the upsell bidding program. You will receive an email from NCL inviting you to bid on an upgraded cabin. The Epic doesn't participate in this program so I didn't research the bidding program that much.

  3. If you are travelling solo, know what cruise you want to go on and flexible as to your cabin, watch prices. Keep an eye on the price and when you think it's good, book it - especially when you are dealing with off-peak weeks.

Absolutely! I have a solo Getaway TA booked next year and I made sure I booked a balcony for that cruise. I booked a balcony for my Princess cruise in 2018.

I thought I could get an upsell deal last minute. I'll be ok in the studio cabin. Plus I'll sleep well since it will be dark in the cabin at night. I'm already packed and ready to go.

  4. You can keep trying but the problem is that you are in a studio/solo. I've been told it is more profitable for them to sell a balcony to 2 or more new guests and get those new sources of onboard spending than it would be to upgrade/upsell you and resell your studio.

Makes sense that's probably why she stressed the solo supplement and that I would pay more to upgrade.

  5. I'm surprised by that. I called for a different sailing the week after your trip on a different ship and told no upsells available yet but that was a couple weeks back. I'd think by now they'd be clearing out for your sailing.

Did they ask you if you had gotten an email - they did to me even though our ship (and yours) is not part of the bid process. I told her no and she checked and said none available yet.

No, she didn't ask about an email. Next time I'll book a balcony right out the bat.

  6. I'm sailing solo this Saturday Dec 3rd on Epic and called the upsell dept today and was told no cabins are available for upsell. But I can still book a cabin on NCL's website. I'm in a studio and wanted a balcony.

The representative stressed the fact that I would pay the 200% solo supplement. Yeah I'm aware of this I told her.

    Anyone else experience this?

Epic isn't included in the email bidding upsell process otherwise I would have gone that route if I received the bidding email.

  7. I haven't sailed in a studio cabin yet but I have one booked on Epic in 2 weeks. I sailed in a balcony before and loved it and really wanted one this time. The balcony would have cost me $800 more so I booked the studio. Next year I'm booked on a Getaway TA and I'm splurging for a balcony or possibly higher if the price is right.

If I would have worked more this year I would have definitely booked a balcony cabin.

  8. Very nice review chicagopaul. I went to college in Kenosha, WI so I was in Chicago a lot.

I followed your other TA review and was happy to see this one. I have a TA booked next year on NCL and really wanted to book Celebrity but I'm a solo traveler, in grad school and I don't like to work that much lol.

I will book a shorter Celebrity cruise solo since I live in Florida. That way I can enjoy Celebrity and not have to work normal hours and still pay the 200% price. I don't mind the demographics because I'm in my 40's and a more subdued cruise sounds appealing. Plus the double points for me as a solo.

  9. OP I used cash on my last Breakaway cruise in Feb and put down $100. I had prepaid everything so they owed me money on the last day . When you arrive at the pier and do your checkin, tell them you will be using cash and they will tell you to go to the service desk once on board . Then you can put down whatever you want

Thanks for answering I was wondering this too. I don't use credit cards and I didn't want to put that much down when I know I won't spend that much plus I already have an OBC that I'm going to use.

  10. I'm not an experienced cruiser, I've cruised once on Carnival which actually almost turned me off from cruising. I'm a solo traveler on land trips and decided cruises offer more bang for the buck and explored other lines besides Carnival. I picked NCL because it is solo friendly. I'm doing a TA next year and picked NCL because of the cost for one person. I have cruises booked with other lines but I see myself always checking NCL for that solo supplement.

  11. You are correct on the time. I forgot about the stops we made. It is about 45 minutes.

But my other statements are still correct.

You can see if you can stay in the same hotel, and leave your car there. That would be easier.

It's ok. I'm sure after my stop to ride the Orlando eye and a trip to Shake Shack in Orlando a once 2 hour trip will become 4. So many attractions along the way to Port Canaveral.

I'm staying at Homewood suites in Port Canaveral the day prior OP. It's a new hotel and I want to say you can park your car there. I'm parking at the port though.

  12. There is a very informative thread already on this NCL forum on hints and tips for the Epic. I have printed it and plan to take it with me on our next Epic cruise. Also you can get

Info on hotels etc checking out the Florida forum and searching for Port Canaveral.

Me too. The thread I think is called epic tips and tricks. I saved the tips to a word document and will print it out and take it with me.

Have fun OP! I'm traveling on Epic in December.

  13. When you're a thirsty person like me, eating at the buffet can be a challenge -- what's going to happen to my food/table when I'm away? So I created this little sign I leave while I'm away:

I love this! What a great idea. I often eat out alone and this happens to me all the time. I will use something like this in restaurants too. Thanks for posting.
