  1. The dress code to allow jeans was altered all the way back in April 2016. I'm kind of surprised at the amount of people that didn't know it had changed.

There is a line that needs to be drawn though. We saw a woman in super short work-out shorts in Palo, with a slightly nicer top. To us, that was not appropriate in a fine dining venue. And we saw a guy turned away in an outfit I can’t describe (almost a pajama) but it seemed liked the right thing to do. And with due respect to a prior poster, I won’t be going to Palo if he/she is up there “naked”.

There was a lady on my last cruise (Wonder, Sept '17) who seemed to always wear what I call "couch couture" - a t-shirt that was several sizes too large (really it was one step from only being good as a rag), track pants and running shoes. The particular day I attended Palo Brunch, she was a couple tables across from me in that very get-up, with her bikini straps (FYI this was an Alaska cruise) clearly visible through the very stretched neck-hole of her shirt. I'm not the kind of person that would go out of my way to complain unless it was a seriously offensive situation, but I was surprised she was allowed in. A year before on the Magic, a gentleman was asked to change shoes before being allowed in for Brunch.

  2. True' date=' but signing up in advance helps the staff know how many "medals" to have available, etc. Also, the quality of the medals varies--right after the big one in conjunction with the WDW marathon, they had leftover medals made of metal..nice, high quality ones that were handed out for the next few cruises. After that, it went back to the plastic ones. I don't know what they are handing out now.[/quote']

They also slightly altered the design of the rubber/plastic medals last year. The medal itself used to have the year on it (mine from 2015 is like this), the new design only has the year on the ribbon. It means they don't have to spend the additional money altering the medal design every year...

  3. If you go to Castaway Cay, make sure you explore the whole island. We missed checking out the adult section. We have friends who missed like 2/3rds of the island (such as the floating water slide) because they didn't realize how much there was to do (they mistook that one tiny play structure as the "main attraction" and assumed things had changed or it just wasn't as impressive as described... then they saw our pics lol).

This pretty much sums us up. First visit in 2013 we made it down to Serenity Bay, but only about an hour before all aboard and the tide had gone out so the swimming was pretty bad. The next time began our routine of visiting SB first, then after lunch heading back through everything on the way to the ship. It wasn't until visit #3 (2015) that I even got around to trying the Pelican Plunge.

  4. Maybe soon the FAA will stop requiring us to be taught how to put on a seatbelt on every flight. Announcement: "Anyone who does no know how to put on his or her seatbelt, please inform your flight attendant." This will screen for terrorists, because everyone else in America knows how to put a seatbelt on. Camels and donkeys do not come equipped with seatbelts!

The reason for this is due to an accident years ago in which there were many preventable deaths due to people not knowing how to unbuckle their seatbelt. Remember, every flight could be someone's first, and you rarely see seatbelts with the lift-up buckle elsewhere. As a flight attendant myself I think it is absolutely necessary.

The last part of your comment is completely out of order.

  5. i wonder if they'll keep the snuggly duckling bar event now that they'll have a snuggly duckling dining experience

I think they will. The only crossover from the sounds of it is that the dining entertainment will feature some of the Snuggly Duckling thugs. Snuggly Duckling Takeover is unique enough to stick around IMO.

  6. This is a welcome change. IMO Carioca's was a dud from the beginning. We have ready many good things about Tiana's Place and look forward to sailing on the Wonder for that experience in a few months. I appreciate DCL recognizing that they could improve the experience and making this change on Magic.

Yep, my second time on the Magic just reinforced my opinion that Carioca's was the worst restaurant on a DCL ship. It was kind of funny being in Tiana's a couple months ago and recognising certain parts of the decor that it shares with Carioca's (clearly leftover from Parrot Cay), just painted a different color. Amazing that there was only three years between the debut of either restaurant, but the concept and execution of Tiana's is simply leaps and bounds ahead of the other.

  7. Disney Cruise Line has revealed some of the planned upgrades/overhauls for the Magic's early 2018 drydock. The enhancements will debut on the March 9, 2018 cruise from Miami.

    - Rapunzel's Royal Table, a new restaurant following a similar style to Tiana's Place on the Wonder.

    - Re-theming of Cove Cafe and Signals Bar to a tropical theme.

    - Updates to Vibe.

    - Re-designed Rainforest Room.

    - Addition of Club Disney Junior in the Oceaneer Club.

The post on the Disney Parks Blog doesn't explicitly mention where Rapunzel's Royal Table will be located, but it seems fairly obvious it will replace Carioca's.

(Speaking of which, it will have only been around for 4.5 years by the time it's removed - is that one of the shortest lifespans for a major cruise ship restaurant?)

  8. Captain John is not with Disney anymore.

Captain Thord is currently on the Dream and is from Plantation, FL.

The cruise director is Carly Scott.

I read somewhere that Captain Henry was on the Dream when it hit the dock in Nassau a month or two ago, and that it was his first week or so back on board. Was that incorrect or do they move Captains around that regularly?

  9. We live in Canada and booked a week ago in CAD funds. Both my husband and myself have My life rewards accounts. We called to ask if we could cash in both sets of points for two $250 OBC. The Club Royale said yes. I figured they would take one to apply to our booking.

Out of curiosity, how was your cruise booked? US RCI website, via a TA, etc?

I ask because we are booked on Explorer next year, and tried to get the OBC. They refused on the basis that our cruise was booked through the Australian RCI website, saying that the US office can't access bookings made on the Australian site (and of course the Aus office doesn't want to know because MyVegas is a "US thing"). Funny thing is when we paid the deposit (via the Aus website) it was charged from Miami and we got stung with the applicable foreign transaction fee. So it all seems a little contradictory...

  10. BartmanLA, we were deck 7 forward too, on the last Alaska cruise of the season! :)

No complaints at all here, just like the Magic you can tell she's an older ship, but having gotten off the Dream just a week or so before embarking the Wonder, there was nothing that glaringly stood out as being "worse" in comparison.

  11. As Shmoo said, the fireworks are usually after second seating, however my second time on the Magic (Oct last year) they were held between seatings. The Personal Navigator had a very specific time of, I believe, 8:01pm. Our server's explanation was parents complained it was too late for kids to watch. Despite this, from what I can gather it's only the Magic class that sometimes has them earlier. They seem to always be after second seating on the Dream class.

I'm another that much prefers Palo Brunch rather than dinner.
