  1. I have stated on many occasions that I am NOT American, that I have never given a CUSTOMS AGENT (i.e. not an employee at check-in) attitude, and never would, and finally, that I don't fly anymore, thus depriving myself of the pleasures of European destinations.

I take it that reading comprehension is a problem for some of you, so I'm done.

  2. I love the idea that asking what stateroom we stayed in keeps us safe. I just love it. Next time, they can ask me what kind of music I like to listen to, just to study my micro-expressions.

I still haven't figured out how bottled water can be used as a deadly weapon. I doubt they have, either. But God bless them, for they are omniscient and above scrutiny.

That doesn't mean I give them attitude. I just shake my head when I'm a "safe" distance away.

Meanwhile, you can bring a loaded gun onto a city bus in many US states.

  3. Again, we are NO SAFER. We travel on cruise ships, and on buses and trains, with much less screening than we experience in airports. We have been trained to check our common sense at the door the minute we enter an airport, and to act like sheep while subjected to ever-more intrusive and pushy security procedures. In my case, these procedures are imposed upon me by people who often have much less education and much less experience in the workplace than I do.

I have NEVER been rude to a Customs agent. I have NEVER refused to answer a question. However, if check-in agents want to know what stateroom I stayed in, they can call the cruise line and ask. I'll wait.

Flying has become a miserable experience. Security is important and necessary, but there is a limit.

By the way, I am not an American.

  4. Just because these questions are standard does not mean that they are appropriate or welcome. We've given away a great deal of control to people who are not trained law enforcement, and we are no safer than we ever were.

The rudest employees I have ever encountered are those who work in airports. They treat paying passengers like garbage because they can, and we put up with it because they have the power to deny boarding.

I don't fly often. It's not worth the aggravation. I love Europe, and have seen some amazing places on cruises, but I am treated far better on my frequent train trips than I ever was in an airport.
