Probably not the ‘most existing’ itinerary, however Day 3: Bergen and Day 4: Ålesund are two very nice DYI cities with good sightseeing opportunities - Day 6: Olden has a nice view point - Loen Skylift as well as Briksdal glacier.

Two scenic deep fjord cruising - do not understand the arrival/departure time for the fjord cruise:

Day 6: Cruise Nordfjord arrive 7:00 AM - depart 5:00 PM

Day 7: Cruise Sognefjord arrive 7:00 AM - depart 4:00 PM

The arrival/departure time are for the ports at the end of the fjords - the cruising is before and after the port visit - already starting 4am - be at upper deck for the two scenic cruising at sunrise (4 to 4:30 am) - also possible evening but might conflict with dinner and shows.

Thank you. We're continuing our search for itinerary including Geiranger and Flam though the above came our way at a very good cost so were considering.   Thanks for the quick reply. Enjoy  😀

  2. Would like any thoughts on the following itinerary for 2023 booking. TIA.

Day 1: London (Dover) depart 5:00 PM
    Day 2: At Sea
Day 3: Bergen arrive 9:00 AM - depart 7:00 PM
Day 4: Alesund arrive 9:00 AM - depart 6:00 PM
Day 5: Molde arrive 7:00 AM - depart 5:00 PM
Day 6: Olden arrive 7:00 AM - depart 5:00 PM
Day 6: Cruise Nordfjord arrive 7:00 AM - depart 5:00 PM
Day 7: Skjolden arrive 7:00 AM - depart 4:00 PM
Day 7: Cruise Sognefjord arrive 7:00 AM - depart 4:00 PM
Day 8: Haugesund arrive 8:00 AM - depart 5:00 PM
    Day 9: At Sea
Day 10: London (Dover) arrive 5:00 AM
  3. Thanks for the quick replies. You are correct, though I did indicate we were going to do as much as possible in Amsterdam, we do plan on keeping low key on the Saturday arrival. Not as young as we once were so the go, go, go on arrival will be limited if at all.

It seems from these replies along with other searches, Basel is largely about various museums and cultural aspects.  And apologies if my interpretation of Lucerne being the foothill to the Alps, I figure that'll be the closest we ever get to them so will plan to take it in.

Any other suggestions are certainly welcome. TIA, enjoy.

  4. Hi...this will be our 1st river cruise after many ocean cruises over the past 20+ years. Very excited as we'll be doing the 8-day Rhine, Amsterdam to Basel with Viking. We will fly in to AMS on Saturday morning and board on Tuesday. We plan to take in as much as possible Saturday afternoon thru Monday evening in the Amsterdam area, we've done some research and have points of interest in mind, though any suggestions are much appreciated.

The bigger concern is post cruise. We disembark on a Tuesday morning and curious if the following is doable...

Tuesday - off the vessel, spend the day and overnight in Basel.

Wednesday - transfer to Lucerne and enjoy the afternoon/evening there.

Thursday - day trip to the Alps, overnight in Lucerne.

Friday - transfer to Zurich airport for return flight to Atlanta.

We have a small amount of flexibility so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for any input. Enjoy.

  5. We'll be doing similar but not certain if we have enough days at end. Any suggestions are welcome..(we'll spend 2.5 days pre-cruise in Amsterdam).  Sail the Rhine for 8 days ending in Basel. Then....

Wednesday Basel - cruise ends, tour Basel then train to Lucerne

Thursday Lucerne - would like to take a day tour to Alps or something of that nature (sorry for my ignorance of region). Is going to Jungfraujoch or Titlis a possibility?

Friday- train to Zurich, would have afternoon/evening to tour

Saturday or Sunday- flight to home

This is our rough draft and trying to determine if doable.  Should we plan to stay overnight in Basel to allow more time there? If we train to Lucerne on Thursday morning, would it still be possible to take a day or half day trip to mtn peak? Spend the Thursday night in Lucerne then train to Zurich midday Friday?

We have gathered travel books and will be reviewing. Only looking for suggestions and I realize our interest plays into it. We definitely want to get to the mtn peak. At this point, beyond that anything goes if we can work into our time away. TIA. Enjoy.

I don't think you will need to be concerned about the noise, we were in staterooms on  300 level on our last two VR 2 cruises and did not hear anything.

Excellent, we were thinking/hoping that would be the case. Not exactly like being under Lido on a mega ship. Hope all is well in Knoxville, we're just down the road in Atlanta.  Appreciate the info. Enjoy!

  7. We're looking at Viking Hermod on the Rhine for August 2022. Would a cabin under the walking track result in noise?

We've cruised many ocean liners and always get sandwiched between cabin decks to avoid noise from Promenade, Lido and other decks that generally generate noise.  Sorry, but this will be our first river sailing. TIA. Enjoy.

  8. We'll be in London at least one week precruise. At this point, adding days post cruise isn't possible, as much as we would like.

I'll conclude best for afternoon flight or stay over 1 night and depart Saturday morning, which is an option.  Appreciate the input. Enjoy your travels  🙂

Customs is very rarely an issue in Europe. It is the red/green honor system. If you don't have anything to declare, Customs takes 2.5 seconds. Immigration will depend a little on where your stops are prior to arriving i n Britain, but not a lot. You will have a secondary check at Heathrow for pre-entrance to the US which can add a little time.

Docking at 5am doesn't mean getting off at 5:05...depends on how the port is set up to accept you. I will let others with more experience answer how early a flight you can book.

Got it and aware you don't walk off at 5:05a. Primarily concerned if 12 noon departure is pushing it or better suited for early afternoon flight. Thanks

If you do some reading on the Britain board, you will see many discussions on this.

Was hoping I would get a more informative answer from you or Flyer. As indicated and you replied over on the Britain board. Thanks

  12. We will be disembarking in Dover on Friday, 8/27/2021. Flying back to Atlanta out of Heathrow. What is a comfortable time for flight departure? Is 12 noon doable?  4 adults and capable of early, self/unassisted debark. Itinerary indicates ship is back in port 5a.m. after a 12-day Baltic sailing.  We're not sure of what we'll need to pass thru regarding European customs, immigration, etc.  Thanks for any input. I'll also be posting in the Cruise Air forum.   😊
