  1. What a nice review! It was suggested that you try one of the newer Princess ships, either the Royal or Regal. My wife and I love cruising in Princess Mini Suites in their older, smaller ships. We found that the Mini Suites on the new Royal class ships are significantly smaller than those on the other ships. The balconies on the Regal were much smaller as well. We found that the newer Royal class ships have a cabin category called 'Deluxe Balcony.' The Deluxe Balcony has a 2 person couch or 'love seat' ,one TV and a shower stall instead of a bath tub. They both have the same small balconies which are about half as deep as what you had on the Caribbean Princess. If we are sailing on one of the newer Princess ships we will always go for the deluxe balcony instead of the mini suite. We save a lot of money and we get everything we would have in the mini suite. The older ships do not have deluxe balconies so we get the mini suites on them.

    Enjoy sailing on princess.

  2. We have no problems that can be an issue. I just signed us up for a ROV on a cruise next April which will also cover our 25th Anniversary. I know my wife that if I asked her should we do this, she would say "no., don't waste the money" If I get her dressed up on a Formal Night and surprise her, she will be in tears of happiness. I just know my wife. Will Princess ruin the surprise?

  3. AAAhh! What a dilemma! Having lost both my mother and father, what I wouldn't give to be able to share a balcony on a cruise with my Dad. The $2,000 is well spent if you can open the balcony divider and share the balcony with dad for the cruise. Forget across the hallway; go for the adjoining minisuite and ask Princess if there is a connecting door to Dad's minisuite as well as opening the balcony divider. You may want to ask if they can move you into adjoining minisuites that do have an adjoining door. I'm sure that the comfort of knowing that you are right there for him will be reassuring and comforting on a cruise to new and exotic locations. You are so fortunate to have this dilemma.

  4. Excellent thread! I've always done the auto tip, sign on the line tips for room service and a nice tip for our steward at the end of the cruise. A friend stated to me that I was shafting the bartenders at the various bars when I didn't leave a dollar or two when I was served by them. What is the consensus? I always thought the auto tip already covered the bartenders and I didn't need to walk around the ship with singles in my pockets. I understand that tipping is at my discretion, but I don't want to double tip when I've already paid one. What do the rest of you think?

  5. On another thread I was reading over the Fun Times they posted and on port day it said to keep your Sail and Sign card as well as your Government issued ID with you at all time. Can you take your drivers license with you instead of your passport when you go to port?

I have an "Enhanced" Driver License. It is supposed to be good for entry to the US by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries - but it is not good for air travel to the US. You must have a passport to enter the US by air. A regular driver license doesn't count for entry to the US, it must be "Enhanced." I mention this because when I was checking in for a cruise to Canada from NY, I asked if my Enhanced License was enough documentation for the cruise. The agent said that it was but if I missed the ship, or had a personal or health issue the might require me to travel back home by air, I wouldn't be able to do it without my passport.

I mention this because taking only your license when you leave the ship will get you back onto the ship but if you miss the ship or have an accident that requires your return to the US, things can get very complicated for you.

  6. I apologize for my previous sarcastic post but am no fan of fake and oft exaggerated news.

Apology accepted. I asked about the safety of PV because I read news accounts and I also read the March 16, 2018 Travel Advisory issued by the US State Department where they advised "Reconsider travel due to crime. Violent crime and gang activity are common in parts of Jalisco state." Although the State Department does say that they do not restrict Government Employees from going to PV, they did not classify it as being "safe." They followed up their info regarding PV with the recommendation to check their web page "Travel to High Risk-Areas." I am in the process of "Reconsidering travel to PV" and as a part of the process I am asking fellow cruisers about their experiences and evaluation of the safety in PV. Thank you for the information you provided in your second post. It will help me evaluate whether or not I plan to get off the boat in PV.

I give you the above information to help explain what induced me to inquire about PV, I'm not debating the safety, I've never been, so I'm looking to learn.

  7. We used to book directly with the cruise line. We booked everything (Air, pre cruise extension, transfers and cruise) directly with Viking. We were left stranded at Brussels airport with no transport to another city in Belgium, PLUS our luggage was left on the plane due to a labor dispute. We had NOBODY to call for help. I spent our first 2 days on the telephone trying to sort out how will we get our luggage. I had to hire a taxi to take me 120 miles round trip to collect our luggage two days later. Never really got to tour the Belgium countryside. Nobody at Viking lifted a finger to help us out even though we paid them for all transfers.

My point is if I had used a TA I would have known who to call for help. I always use a TA now.

  8. i am a big fan of S.O.S. (from from days as a submariner). I can’t recall if it’s served on Princess.

Is it? In MDR or HC?

As I understand, if you ask Princess before you sail (maybe in the cruise personalizer) they'll stock it for you.

I'd be interested in finding out if they get the S.O. S. for you.
