  1. The pool on the Carnival Splendor in the late afternoon on a sea day was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen on a cruise ship. The water was nearly green and had a thick coating of scum (sunscreen and??). There were people in that pool for hours on end just drinking, they never got out so you can imagine what was in the water at the end of the day. It was packed too, like sardines in a can.

I did it when I was younger and wasn't the only one. There's chlorine in the water so it's ok at first but the water does get pretty gross at the end of the day, on those short party weekend cruises. When everyone's doing it and you've got your spot and are tipsy, who wants to dry off before you're done? Cindy keeps me more in line nowadays. :halo:

  2. Most "American" foods originated somewhere else!

That's my point exactly. All these folk (including you) want to make fun of my diet without considering that once upon a time chicken wings were a delicacy and crickets and snails were not. It used to cost a fortune for a chicken egg on the frontier. To those folks a place like Hooders or Buffalo Wild Wings would be the upscale foodie option. We're so used to the premium foods over here that it's now looked down on and American want the stuff that people had to grin and bear 150 years ago.

Tuscan Grille has been doing this for a couple years already; they offer a prime dry aged ribeye for an upcharge. Ribeye is a really fatty cut of beef and prime grade has the most marbling (fat).

See you can't make this stuff up

  3. Hooters: Wings/Boobs/sports.

LOL that sounds like my kind of place before I got married to Dear Sweet Cindy. Now I have to try and be good, or least pretend. :halo:

Haha, yeah some cruise lines probably would start offering extra fatty meats while charging extra for it as a 'delicacy'!

Hooters actually does have good food! They have some other 'nice" things there too which makes it all the better, but I suggest you go without telling your wife unless she's not the jealous type. You do see a lot of women there with their boyfriends and husbands however. It's not such a naughty place.

Ok, Hooters doesn't have a cruise line do they? I bet the wings are good if they're anything like Buffalo Wild Wings. :D

  4. Fact is, her food that night was not edible to me. Period. But to her and my friend it was edible. Let this story sink in to some of you who are attacking Nancy for a moment. Some people literally love eating horrible things and think it's great, while others will think it's disgusting.

Don't give them ideas or they'll offer the "Nouveau riche Gristle" for $50 surcharge in one of the specialty restaurants.

I saw your post about Hooters. Is it any good? I would have to talk Cindy into letting me go LOL.

  5. Gross.

If you want to loose weight cut way down on your wheat and dairy consumption. Eat more fruits and vegetables.

Hu? Soy, Sunflower, Beats, Vitamins and Minerals is gross Wheat and Dairy?

I was on a big corn dog and burrito kick for lunch, if we didn't go out for the Buy 1 Get 1 coupons at McDonalds. A health shake isn't so bad.

  6. "negative Nancy's"

again, you are making a judgement call because I dared state an opinion...an opinion that you do not share that I am very entitled to....there are others here that say the same thing, "MDR on Eclipse has been the worst ever" of all our sailings on that ship...

according to you , anyone that does not share your opinion , is negative....I say that is a very negative way to think....

Some people still have a chip on their shoulder over what you said and the consistency. It's the "Emperor has no clothes" type phenomenon. I haven't seen any of this on Princess or Viking Ocean or Oceania.

Inedible doesn't even mean everything like you said the Ocean Buffet was good, and probably most of the MDR was edible. I had food that I wouldn't eat on Carnival and Even Royal Caribbean, which also means it's inedible to me. We're all just trying to figure out the best bang for our hard earned dollars here folks!

  7. I think a study of history will show you that not everyone does anything these days, or any days in the past. So I'm curious, after several hundred posts on this thread about food on a line you (I think) stated you haven't sailed, what is your decision?

It looks like there's not enough consistency and people are reacting to criticism like they know something isn't right with Celebrity like it used to be. I'm seeing more snack options and higher end dishes both on Princess. We're leaning towards a 5 Night on the Ruby Princess. That post on the previous page started out as a new thread because we've learned more and were giving the Celebrity crowd one last try to convince us otherwise, but someone complained that I made a duplicate thread, and so I'm back.

  8. Doug and Cindy, I would certainly never look down on anyone for their food preferences. I honestly care what anyone else eats and it doesn't affect me in the least. I've been happily married to my DH for many years and dearly love him. We absolutely do not share the same taste for food. Why would I care what someone I've never met likes? How ridiculous that would be! I reacted to your statement that "Americans don't know how well they've got it" by pointing out that no one should paint with a broad brush when describing an entire country (USA or and other). BTW, escargot (snails) may be enjoyed (or not) in the MDR and one needn't go to a specialty restaurant to obtain them. The MDR offers a wide variety of foods, both exotic and more mundane to please all palates. Enjoy what you like. MDR offers chicken dishes, salmon, steak, pasta etc., as well as the dishes you don't seem to care for. We've been on multiple cruises on multiple lines and have enjoyed everything from pizza, pasta, and burgers, to escargot, frogs legs, and foie gras. I can quite honestly say I've never commented on the likes or dislikes of my fellow cruisers, not would I judge them. Shame on anyone who does.

Yeah that makes sense and I agree. I didn't mean to knock Americans or non-Americans, I just view this country as the glass is half full and we should appreciate what we have. Not everyone does these days.

  9. No nationality is all the same.

What part of the country is hard to find chicken wings? I am willing to bet that most of the world would rather eat in your Ocean View Buffet rather than eat snails and frog legs up in the upcharge restaurants. I've been dealing with snobbery for over three weeks without complaining, but you folks don't seem to like it when the shoes on the other foot.

Eat adventurous and exotic all you want, but don't look down on us meat and potatoes peeps without considering that maybe your frou-frou dishes aren't all that special in other cultures.

  10. You ever eat Frog's Legs or Squid? Frog's Legs are kind of like chicken. Squid, when done right is one of my fav's. By the way "poorer country" is a fairly low blow! Different foods are everywhere. I'd love to see how long you'd last with Richard & myself when it comes to dining! Richard is Chinese & though I was pretty adventuresome, most of what we eat in China town most of the "adventuresome" weouldn't touch. Same goes for Sushi & the like. Ever had Foie Gras or Sweet breads? There's more to food than just a steak & potatoes! Perhaps you need to get out & try the more exotic. Green Eggs & ham were pretty good once he tried them!

So when I paint the "foodie" options in a not so flattering light, that's a low blow, but I can get made fun of for pages on here and that's hilarious. Green Eggs & ham yes. Have you been on Carnival?

  11. We have sailed on princess a few times, but many more times on the Summit. I find the food on the summit, and Celebrity ships overall much better then princess. As far as healthy options, it is up to you and your family to make healthy options. The spa cafe has many choices, as does the buffet. The choice is up to you

I figured that there would be healthy options on both, so that's not the problem. The last few weeks we've been drinking Soylent Meal Replacements for lunch to cut down on calories. Yeah I like my junk food, but we're eating more healthy at home and live it up while we're out. It just looks to me like Princess might be the best of both worlds.

Some folks have criticized me for not eating frog legs and squid, like they're high class. The truth is that if frog legs were common meat, these folks would look down on "Kentucky Fried Frog Legs" on every street corner, but the high end restaurant goers would be just as smug about their rare exotic chicken treats. Americans don't know how well they've got it. All the best foods are already common, and frog legs and squid is what we would eat if we were a poorer country.

  12. Someone needs to get a life and maybe go get a burger and pizza on land.

I can eat that stuff like that anytime on land. What did you have for lunch today BTW? Some of the folks reading this might want to actually know the difference between the two cruise lines. There's folks that have never been on Princess before and are curious or people from Princess looking over the fence. You can see by the other comments that Princess is doing some things right and you might not like it, but that's why you're going after my diet.

  13. JR has not been on RCL for 20 years. Not sure but maybe Freedom class was the first to have it then it was pushed to the others. The first cover I remember for JR was 5.95 and we did not pay that.

I would pay $5.95 or even 7.95, but I can eat there for $10 on land. It's pretty bad if I have to sneak food onto the ship to not get hosed.

  14. We're eyeballing a cruise on the Celebrity Summit in October, but also Princess has 5 Day cruises on the Ruby and Star for about the same price. The ships both look high end but Princess has a nicer looking pool and atrium to be honest.

We were going to switch to Royal Caribbean but they're upping the charge for Johnny Rockets to $13 a head along with all the other nickel and diming. I can get that cheaper on land so no way, and we're tired of Carnival and thought that RCCL's buffet was so-so, so want something new. Many folks have chimed in claiming that Celebrity's food was "Inedible" after trying the higher end foods on Oceania and the like. Some don't agree and say they've never gone hungry.

We're trying to eat healthier at home with Soylent Meal Replacement and Kosher hot dogs and bean stew with lots of salads. We want to to switch up our cruising lunch diets so we can eat whatever we want for dinner. These cruise lines could save some money by having a soylent type product on tap and save our waistline a few notches on the belt. We want healthyish lunches - good dinners - tasty late night snacks - the best of both worlds. Which cruise line is better?

    Princess has the foodie dishes

    And the good snacks

    pizzeria-2-768.jpg

Should we give Celebrity a try or does Princess have the better ship design and food varieties?

  15. We're taking a look at that Summit cruise in September. I won't pay $13 for Johnny Rockets anyways so it is down to RCCL buffet vs Celebrity buffet, and you folks say Celebrity is better. If we don't like it at least we gave it a shot. Cindy's parents are on her about eating a bit healthier so maybe we can try both. We'll let you peeps know afterwords how edible the food really is.

  16. We love RCCL, especially the Oasis Class, but we enjoyed the Divina in 2015, and we are going again in November for a 12 day. It's a different vibe, and a real nice change of pace. We also enjoyed the Escape, but still prefer RCCL over NCL. Price is also an advantage with MSC.

I just learned that we're getting hosed on RCCL with a $12.95 charge per person for Johnny Rockets. The wife and I decided that we're going to either try Princess or Celebrity next year, and go into it with open expectations. It looks like they both have buffets and not just exotic foodie options, but more of the American experience we're used to.

  17. Agree. I've read several of your other threads. You've stated pretty clearly that you don't like "exotic food like squid and frogs legs." You're a fan of the ship that has Johnny Rocket's and the hot fog cart. There is NOTHING wrong with your personal choices and food preferences. But you will hate MSC.

When we sailed on the Davina, I don't think they had a comedian. They had opera one night which I thought was wonderful - but I'm guessing you're cringing at the idea of opera.

NCL is a good choice - buy you seem very happy with RC. I don't know why you would change.

Opera is the evening entertainment or a side gig? My wife likes the female singer in old Nightwish CD's but not so much the traditional music. It doesn't sound like NCL is that great either, and honestly other than Guy's Burgers we're sick of Carnival food. Looks like Royal Caribbean is just our speed.

  18. ecific dish they may have felt to their dislike or even many dishes.

As to closing the thread, I think anyone not wanting to participate or thinking the thread a waste of time should not participate vs promoting the closing of a thread that is not doing any harm other than maybe wasting their time. I skip many threads when I think it is non relevant or of no interest to me, NOT censorship.

    Thank you. (y)(y)

I see from some of the other post and reviews that Celebrity food isn't what it used to be, so maybe I hit a nerve. If it's still above some of the other lines and to your liking, there's no reason to get defensive or call for censorship. Some folks are just going to move on to what they were used to, and try Oceania or Viking Ocean and the like.

I know.I got hammered on Carnival for trying Royal Caribbean, so I know where Nancy is coming from. Maybe we're all playing leapfrog at different times while these cruise lines make cuts. Some day Oceania will be the new Carnival, and cheerleaders will get upset at those jumping to Crystal - the new mid tier line.
