  1. Wondering what everyone thinks of the Sun since it has been remodeled! We go on it for the first time

this Sept! But we have been on sister ships (Dawn, Wind)

I posted a bunch of pictures of the Sun after she came out of dry dock.

    Search “Pictures of refurbished Sun”.

  2. I actually seriously laughed out loud. Wow...so many strange threads on here today. Quite entertaining.

    Absolutely agree!!

Some people are just not capable of ever having a premium experience. They’re just not happy if they don’t have something to whine about. I think it’s part of the “look, look at me” experience on social media.

Today has been an interesting day, across many of the cruise line forums. I guess you could call it entertaining!! SMH.

  3. I think there’s more than one person at fault here.

And .... I think if your son had not indicated he could find his way back to the cabin, they would not have let him leave the area. I think this could have been handled better by the staff, but I think you need to hold hubby accountable for not making sure your son was in his assigned age space. JMO.

And BTW, sounds like your son is s resource young man. He found his way back to his cabin. Well done.

  4. The "free" excursions offer is the most misleading IMHO. They should say "discounted" excursions. You get a $50 per cabin (not person) discount per port.

    .

David: Actually on my last cruise, four of my excursions were completely FREE!! Firstly I had $50 per person credit since I got a $25 per person credit for my “FREE” perk AND an additional $25 per person credit for “distinctive voyage offer”. That second credit was a very happy surprise.

I did 3 HOHO tours ( $45-$50) and a harbour boat ride in Cabo ($39). After credits I was charged $0, $0, $0 and $0 for those 4 excursions. And my $139 Victoria excursion cost me $89.

So five excursions for $89. I was beyond happy. And now that I understand the value of a Distinctive Voyage, I’ll be searching for those in the future.

So.....even that excursions offer can work out!!

  5. I boarded at Seattle six weeks ago. Handicapped/ special needs boarding did not necessarily get early access to the ship. Pax in wheelchairs were given assistance in boarding and they were grouped separately from general boarding pax after they got there number. There was no general call for handicapped boarding immediately after the priority pax went on board. As wheelchairs became available they were taken forward to board and at that point they were put ahead of passengers already in line.

Let me add this proviso to what I stated. It was the first cruise of the season out of Seattle. The staff were all new and it appeared there was a lot of “on the job training” going on. It was a cluster*, no doubt about it. Chaotic and disorganized. No one seemed to know what they were doing. They suspended boarding several times because passengers weren’t following the rules. I hope by this point

in the season they have figured it out and it may be an entirely different process where there would be a boarding call for handicapped.

OTOH, there weren’t nearly enough wheelchairs for all the handicapped passengers at the same time.

Just be prepared to be patient and flexible.

  6. I live in the northeast and have traveled extensively to the mid Atlantic and south eastern states and have not seen a handicapped placard with a photo on it; not even my 90 year old grandmother.

But, even if they exist in some states, I can guarantee that photo is not for the public ( read busybody) to casually check out the validity of the user.

    Get real.

Well I live in South Carolina and my photo is on my placard and I can be ticketed if it is displayed with the picture and date hidden.

    GET REAL.

  7. There’s photos on them there placards!!!! They are supposed to be visible to someone outside the car. You can casually check out their status without making a big deal of it or embarrassing a disabled person with an unseen Disability.

  8. Best of my thoughts and wishes to the entire family that has been going through this ordeal! I have been thoroughly impressed with how quickly responsive this forum’s community has been in providing reassurances, suggestions and offers of help to those in need. It makes me real happy to see humanity at it’s best.

I bet your daughter is a lot stronger than you think. But she needs

to reach out to guest services and let them know what she needs. I wouldn’t wait , hoping some of the staff are mind readers.

She will be be in Barcelona or Naples on Tuesday. You could fly there and meet her if you think she needs support.

  9. You say this is your daughter who called so I am assuming the patient is her mother in law and your son in law could not accompany her on the evac?

So your daughter/ husband/ grand can leave the ship in Naples and fly to Barcelona on Tuesday AM, I would imagine.

If that is the plan maybe it would be easier for you to make the flight reservation from Naples to Barcelona??

I know that feeling of helplessness you must be experiencing, so far away.

  10. Wow. Thanks for all the suggestions. Very very helpful.

As to my 90 year old Mom she is surprisingly mobile, still drives and still uses her bathtub at home and lives alone.

However, she’s not up to standing for long periods of time.

Heck, I’m 23 years junior and my lower back won’t let me either.

We are supposed to be doing a 7 day RT rail tour from London thru Switzerland next summer, but I’m thinking a nice cruise thru the Fjords would be easier for us and just as scenic.

  11. Hi everyone,

We are cruising with our kids around the world in 2020. I am trying to find some other people who have done this that I can chat to. I realise it's very rare and keeping my fingers crossed! Are you out there?!

PS I did a lot of research before booking, so I'm not looking to start a debate on whether or not it's a good idea, just hoping to chat to someone else who may have already done it. Thank you :)

I applaud you for doing this. Your kids will benefit greatly from this IMO.

Can you share the WC you chose?

  12. I did 18 days on the Sun recently and don’t think there was ever a complete repeat menu in MDR. There were some appetizers, entrees, and desserts that repeated and there a few standards that repeated every night, French onion soup, salmon tartare, choc lava cake, cheese plate, ice cream and the regular 4/5 entrees for people with limited palates.

I did not get bored. There were a few things I wish they had repeated.

  13. No problem whatsoever.

They have cards for the staff that lists all ingredients. The waiters were very diligent and we were visited by the maitreD almost every evening. My mom also has severe shellfish allergy so we gots lots of care. This was in the MDR of course.

At the buffet just ask a server and they will check in the kitchen.

But the important thing to do is call the Special Needs desk so your allergy will pop up on the screen whenever you walk into the dining room. Super easy.

Call the 800 number. They will send a confirmation email to you.

And to be on the safe side you can check with the MTD on embarkation day.

  14. If you have logged your allergy with the Special Needs desk, your food allergy will pop up on screen when you scan in at any restaurant.

My mother and I both recorded food allergies ( not the same one). I may be off on this but it seemed like we both had black cloth napkins at dinner every night, while everyone else at the table had white. They never placed the white napkin from the table on our lap, they always switched it out. I’m not sure if it meant anything, but seemed like nonintrusive way to identify diners with allergies.

  15. Most of the deck 8 balconies have some degree of obstruction [on the deck plans they are categories DB, DC & DF. We has cabin 8.003 right next to the library [category BF] which was not obstructed. Aft of the lifeboats the rooms are Category BC - also not obstructed.

We usually book a 'sheltered balcony' and yes, the bottom of the port [the hole in the hull] is higher than height of eye when seated [need to stand to look straight out]. When seated, the view is just sky.

    Thanks. Very helpful!

  16. I’m looking at booking my first Cunard cruise and since it’s the Norwegian Fjords, I’m looking at balconies for the first time.

On QM2 It looks like all the balconies on Deck 8 have obstructed views, so I’m guessing that’s due to the lifeboats.

Other cabins have the sheltered balconies. I’ve found a few pictures of that style and they look fine BUT I have one question:

Will I be able to get a good view and be able to see over the rail while seated OR will I have to stand at the rail?

Anyone have any specific recommendations of cabin or type??

Traveling with my mother who is 90. I want her to have a good view but not have to stand. Well, I want that for me, too.

Also interested in recommendations on the Victoria since she also has that itinerary.

    TIA
