  1. Nice! We will be there next Thursday off the Dream as well. Will be our 5th time there. We LOVE it there. We always ask for Andres at the pool bar. Last time he had balloons and a welcome sign for us when we got there. The food is AMAZING. Love the whole fried fish (even those that are not fish people liked it). There is also a 'Starbucks', wi-fi, shops with all the things at the port, and a cigar shop that has decent smokes. Got a nice Sanchos framed family picture for $30. Definitely tip!! They work very hard.

ANDRES!!! <3 <3 <3 We were just there last week...loved it so much we've got reservations for Christmas Eve :) Andres gave us his card and told us to email him b4 we came in Dec. :) He is really beyond awesome, right?

  2. What you see directly in front of the tender pier area, and especially to your left as you exit, is the congregation of tour excursion hawkers, attempting to get you to take a tour with their company. No different than many cruise ports on Caribbean islands and certainly 1000X better than any city in India. ;p Go right and they aren't there. Go two blocks and they disappear and you'll find just cruisers or locals going about their daily business. Walk around the Fort George area or across the swing bridge and down Albert Street or have lunch at Annie's Lunchbox or Nerie's and you may meet friendly local folks.
crewsweeper, Once again, you have exactly the info I am seeking! You might remember I responded to one of your posts on Maya Chan a week or so ago, and booked due to your expert advise. I will take this advise too, because we love to be around the locals. We also ventured out on our own in Honduras, and had the time of our lives. Yes, there were hawkers, but we just kept saying "No Thanks" until we made our way through them and had a ball. Found a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant owned by a little family. Great food! Poor area, but super sweet ppl. We took along another couple we'd met ziplining, for safety in numbers, but in retrospect would have been fine on our own:) (Also: If you could pick one, Annie's or Nerie's for reasonably priced local food in a cozy place?
  3. that would be good.

I must apologize for the lack of pictures. Photobucket changed their process and started charging fees. Thus all those pictures were lost and i haven't found a sharing service that i like yet.

update: Request accepted to maya chan!! Sooooo excited!! :)

  4. I'm sure some of the beach clubs will be open. Possibly those associated with a hotel like Pez Quadro ( Los40 Canones), Hotel El Caballo Blanco, Maybe Nacional Beach Club. Hotel Mahaual is in front of Barefoot Beach IIRC.

You can email them and ask.

There is a market, El Mercado on the malecon at Rubio. Also, Fernando runs a small convenience store on the corner of Huanchango (the street 1 block inland from the malecon) and Sierra (the cross street before Tropicante. No clue if they'll be open though. There is a fruit stand next to Karita's on the malecon at Martillo, just down from El Caballo Blanco.

crewsweeper, I really appreciate your knowledge and input.....in fact, I requested a reservation just a few hours ago because of a post reply you made on "best beach day pass in Costa Maya" where you and several others sang the praises of Maya Chan. Still waiting for reply, but hopeful they will be open on Christmas, as this sounds right up our alley :)

  5. Wondering what to do Christmas Day in Costa Maya. Tropicante owner Steve emailed me and said they're closed, which means so will Krazy Lobster, our fav. Any suggestions? We'd like to just drink beer on beach and chill. Will taxis still be operating? Does anyone know if there's a convenience store to buy beer and just bring a little cooler w/ us? Just me and hubs, looking for nice hang out place that isn't closed for holiday.

  6. Hi, rookie question: are kids welcomed/allowed? Is there anything that may be of interest to them there?

We have excursions planned for other POCs so Costa Maya we had planned to be a less structured day. Totally sold on the massages & good guac, so long as the kids are allowed in!

Kids are totally allowed, it's just a restaurant on the beach. Not fancy, kind of laid back and tropical. You can sit at picnic tables or lounge chairs and they'll bring you drinks and food and the kids can play in the ocean or sand while you sit back and relax.. If you google them and look up their website you can look at pics of the place and get a better idea. It's really a lovely place!

  7. DH and I spent the day at Krazy Lobster last month. We had the best time!! Food was superb. I got the shrimp tacos, 20 plus shrimp on each of 3 tacos for $8., $1 bottles of Corona minis or buckets of beer (small 8 or 10oz) $5/bucket with limes, best guac ever, plate full for $5. Atmosphere, priceless....awesome day, awesome servers, lovely locals peddling their wares, not pushy, just friendly, can't wait to go back in December!

  8. Haven't been to this site but be careful we watch a French family try to dispute a bill and then found that they upped the prices on us too. We order guac and thought it was pricey at $10. Turned out to be $25 because without telling us chips were not included. They brought them and we ate them. Didn't find out they were $15 additional. Not sure how you would eat guac without them. The beer were $5 on the menu still we assumed that soda would be that or less. The price was not on the menu and they ended up charging me $10 each. We liked Costa Maya but hesitate to book cruises that stop there now.

What restaurant was this? We went to Krazy Lobster and it was sooo good and so cheap! $1 Coronas!! $8/ 3 HUGE shrimp tacos so big I couldn't eat them all, and I'm a big eater. Prices were cheap on everything else too.

  9. We are new to cruising, having gone on our first cruise last month, and we are totally hooked!! Why would you do anything else for vacation? :) We paid a down payment on a future cruise on day 3 on board, and have booked 2 more already! My question is this: How do we get around the policy most ships seem to have regarding drink packages? I don't drink, and DH enjoys beer, so he bought it as he went, which even for a light drinker ends up being quite pricey. It seems unfair to punish him for my not drinking. There must be some way around this, right? I mean, what if your traveling companion was your child? We are booked with RC for Christmas, and NCL in Feb. '19.

  10. A month ago today we embarked out of Tampa on our 1st cruise, 3rd day aboard we had already paid deposit on a future cruise, and a week ago we booked a Christmas Cruise and one 2 months later in Feb. 2019.....does this mean we caught the bug too?? It's all we talk about, and when we're not at work, we're talking about our cruise or watching youtube videos of cruises/ports/anything cruisey. Can't wait for Christmas!!
