  1. I don't believe in tipping before service has been received, so I always post pay. I always receive excellent service, with one exception. My steward on the Inspiration did his job, but nothing more than that. At the end of the cruise, I still didn't know what he looked like even though I saw him two or three times. He just wasn't memorable. I didn't tip him extra. My MDR staff on that cruise did get extra tips.

I suppose we must have had the same cabin steward on the Inspiration :(:(:(

  2. Yep, exercise your right... If you are happy being subsidized by others, why not. Just not how most of us roll. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!!

You actually misinterpreted my post, I challenge you to find ANY posting from me which mentions that I did or did not remove the DSC. You assumed the former and we all know what they say about people who just assume things that are not there.

I was merely posting an objective assessment of the current DSC situation and actually encouraging cruiselines (so much for NCL being a leader and a trailblazer!!!) to follow in Costa's footsteps by making the DSC mandatory.

  3. The bottom line is this:

As long as the DSC is a discretionary charge, there will ALWAYS be those of us who exercise the right to remove the DSC and there will always be those who of us who will pay it with no questions asked.

So I think that in the end, it all evens out. Those of us who remove the DSC are happy....those of us who pay the DSC are happy as well. It is a win-win situation for both types of passengers.

The real winners are those of us who leave the DSC intact AND tip over and above that....they are also happy. I see none of them complaining about the fact that by their generous actions they are subsidizing the cost of the cruise on behalf of those of us who choose to remove the DSC.

Perhaps the cruiselines, NCL included, should look towards Costa Cruises whose DSC is mandatory. That would put an end to this bloody battle.

  4. Actually it is not optional to pay it, it is optional to have it removed if you have an issue on board that cannot be resolved (per NCL anyway), read the last line of the FAQ about the service charge.

    Straight from the horse's mouth:

    NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

    Guest Ticket Contract

3.© Service Charges: Certain members of Carrier’s crew are compensated by a combination of salary

and incentive programs that are funded in part by the service charge paid by each Guest. The charge ,

which is automatically added to your onboard account and subject to adjustment at your discretion, is

intended to reward service provided in all departments and job categories and is distributed to employees

according to Carrier's evaluation of job performance. A portion of the service charge collected by Carrier

is also used for fleet-wide crew welfare programs.

  5. Why do people on Cruise Critic get so worked up every single time this topic comes up? Some of us tip, some of us don't tip. Some of us leave the DSC intact, some of us remove the DSC.

On NCL the DSC is a discretionary charge so it should be nobody's business what one does with this. Now if NCL would follow Costa's policy and make the DSC mandatory, than that would be a different situation.

    Just sayin' people.

Some of you need to take a chill pill, or two!

  6. Not implying or saying anything. That was along the line as a question/comment, ending with a ? question mark ... ditto for shareholder's OBC, as a ? or observation..............

Oh ok, thanks for the clarification. I appreciate the courtesy.

You had me worried there for a while.....I thought it might have been some new rule that NCL might have introduced lately.

We have 4 CruiseNext certificates still in our possession that we want to use but "real" deals along the lines that you mentioned further down your reply seem to be getting harder and harder to find on NCL (on any cruiseline actually, nowadays).

    Thanks,

    Fred

  7. Ha, the spa ladies get their chances to upsell you to a variety of products & treatment, port day specials ... everything from a detox facial to mineral baths, accu-massage.

And, you didn't apply your CruiseNext certificate ? Not getting stockholder's OBC ... effectively lowering your net costs. That's nice but not good enough milking their system.

Congrats, regardless ... we had solo cruisers on last year's Roll Call scoring similar deals recently, with double upgrade from Insides to Balconies, just not a Spa one from what I know. Very nice.

Hold on just a moment here, are you implying that with a last-minute Sail-Away rate one cannot apply a CruiseNext certificate?

Or that one does not get the shareholder's benefit OBC with the same last-minute Sail-Away rate?

  8. You need to speak to someone in the "inventory" department.

On our upcoming May 12 Splendor cruise, we booked a guarantee cabin.

Last week we were assigned a cabin, based on prior experience on the Splendor,

I was not too keen about the cabin assigned to us.

I called Carnival and chose the option for assistance with an existing booking, explained

what I was trying to accomplish, the helpful CSR transferred my call to a gentleman

in the inventory dept and we went thru a list of cabins that he said he could assign me

to until I found one that I liked, location-wise.

It took maybe all of 15 minutes from start to finish.

Good luck with your cabin change.

  9. If I have already paid my balance in full, is there a way to add the gift cards to my sail & sign account online or do I have to wait until we are onboard to apply them?

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Onboard.............and I would wait until the last couple of days of the cruise to do so, that way you'll know much to apply. At least that's what I do.

  10. Did I read somewhere where you have to request ice bucket now? Could the bucket you get beers in be used for ice bucket? We have a small cooler for insulin. We used gallon ziplocks last time to put in cooler. It still was wet so we put in shower. Was thinking we could put ice bucket in cooler., then put ice in bucket .Cooler is a round 11x 11 collapsible one. Would this work?

That's what we got the week before last on the Imagination. I asked our cabin steward to keep our ice bucket replenished with PLENTY of ice and he brought a large plastic beer bucket brimming with ice.
