  1. I’ve done it a few times with things that didn’t need to look nice, like pjs, T-shirt’s, bras, etc. Be aware that nothing gets ironed, it’s all washed in a community/industrial washer and dryer, and there’s no guarantee your things won’t fade or shrink. There have been a lot of complaints about how swimsuits come back. Personally, I hand wash and dry as much as I can in the bathroom.

  2. OMG! Many thanks to all those who have experience in these ports. One of my all time favorite food memories is of a seaside pub in Salem, MA where I first experienced a butta-drenched lobsta roll. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven! DH and I are doing a NCL Dawn cruise next year and hope to find that holy grail again.

  3. We were on the Gem for the August 12th sailing and during sail away they called everyone down for the Muster. I was so disappointed. The main reason I booked out of NYC was to see the Statue of Liberty and to go under the bridge. Unfortunately we were running down the end of the Gem to catch a glimpse of the Statue to get a quick pic. There were rumors that people boarded the ship late and that was the reason so obviously not a regular occurance but a huge bummer.

Yes, it's a bummer that the ship always has to wait for the folks that booked their travel arrangements through NCL and are running late. (Another reason not to book through them.)

But......wink wink;p nod nod .........If you're desperate for a sail-away photo opp you can miss the muster drill and do a make-up later.....sometimes the next day. (Just don't spread that around. There may be a mutiny.)

  4. Since it's your first cruise I would skip it. There's so much to see and do all around the ship. Not to mention just enjoying the ocean views from the open decks. (Instead of indoors!) But a lot of folks swear by it, although we've never felt the need for it after 30+ years of cruising. Whatever you decide, I'm confident you'll have a great cruise. ;p

  5. Your photos are beautiful, history75! They made my cry......not only because of their beauty, but because I get to do this cruise on the Breakaway next year. Thank you for sharing!

This evening tour looks totally worth it. (Although I'm used to 7 hours of sleep and it takes me awhile to get ready in the AM.) Oh well, suck it up and enjoy a once in a lifetime opportunity, right?

  6. Food just tastes better when you wear a collared shirt and don't curse. ;p

While long pants aren't required, I would suggest wearing them there your first evening and getting a feel for how your fellow cruisers are dressing.

I'm sure evenings after a long day in port are more casual. One of my favorite quotes is "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."

  7. Naw. I am in my 20s too. It's not a young people thing. It's a being broke kind of thing. $130/day/person is very cheap considering all that she is getting. She is probably like most millennials and doesn't have a great job, which I don't get as I was making enough to pay for my undergrad debt, go on vacation, and save a small nest egg which I liquidated it all on med school. Maybe your niece should get with me instead  (jk of course).

Wait a minute.....Can I git wit you? (jk, happily married for 32 years but so far loving your posts.)

  8. I can't wait to visit HC. Those who live near lovely beaches in a hot climate or have easy regular access to the Caribbean are probably a little blasé about visiting tropical Islands- you should try living in the UK for a while (we do have some gorgeous beaches, but normally not the climate to go with them)! Just being on a beach in the sunshine is paradise to me- I don't give two figs how course the sand is. If I feel like paying for food and drink on the island I will, if I don't want to I will walk back to the ship for lunch seeing as I possess legs to do this. I can see how the loungers could become crowded with a megaship in port so we will just get off nice and early to snag a good spot and an umbrella. I can't wait!

BEST post ever. Have a great cruise, Squishy, and don't let the dregs get you down.
