  1. Yesterday I spoke with a young woman (mid-late 20's) who said she and some friends were on a recent short cruise on the Ruby. She reported that everything, including the casino and all bars and lounges, shut down by 10:30 at night. They couldn't even get the casino manager to turn on a few slot machines for them. Has anyone else encountered this problem? We sail on Monday and we enjoy music and dancing after dinner.

  2. We will be on a 5-day cruise on the Ruby Princess during Lent. Does anyone know what sort of meat-free options they offer in the MDR on Fridays? (I'm assuming these pretty much stay the same, and they won't add anything different in 5 weeks.) It doesn't matter if it's seafood or meatless pasta, or something of that sort, but it would be nice to know in advance that there are options available.

    Thanks,

    Kathy

  3. We did a ship's tour of Christiansted, which has a small shopping area, mostly touristy "island" stuff made in China. We had an excellent guide, and the historic area was very interesting, if that's your thing.

I understand some of the rum factories give tours.

In Fredricksted, there's a fort and a few shops and local craft booths. We actually got some authentic local wood carvings as gifts for family back home in one of the stores, the one with the rum tasting.

It's a place I could easily go and stay a few days, very laid back, wonderful weather.

  4. We did the 14-day Celebrity cruise last fall, and it was worth every penny. BUT, if a specific cabin is what you sail for, rather than outstanding ports, then stick with LOS.. We had an oceanview on deck 3, midship, and didn't feel much motion. A few nights, the theatre was bobbing up and odwn. I think, as others have said, it just depends on how rough the seas are.

    Hope this helps.

  5. If you only cruise for the beach/water experience, this is not the cruise for you. BUT, there's so much else to see that you won't miss it. I'm not sure what your ports are, but every one is packed with fantastic scenery, historic and cultural sites, friendly people. Take some land excursions and enjoy the great food. Believe me, the lobster in Maine is better than any you'll find on a cruise ship.

  6. Our experience on Legend was that the volume was not overly loud during the movies. During the day there were no movies showing and the volume was low.

Graet! I assume there is a poolside band, and we'd much rather hear the music.

Hope this doesn't change between now and Feb. 2015.

    Thanks for all your replies.

  7. Thanks for doing a "live from" thread. We are looking at a cruise in Feb. 2015.

As others have stated, I am concerned by the negative reviews, especially regarding the surly staff and the plumbling problems. I'd also like to know about the volume of the poolside movies, especially during the day.

Enjoy your cruise, and thanks for your reports.

  8. We are considering a cruise on the Legend of the Seas. I understand they have recently added a poolside movie screen. People who have experienced this on Princess have mentioned that the volume during the day is too loud to carry on a conversation. Is this also true of RCI, specifically the Legend?

It's not a deal-breaker, and we will probably book the cruise, depending on DD and her BF's work schedules, but it's nice to be prepared.

    Thanks,

    Kathy

  9. Thanks to all of you for your helpful replies.

I'm not sure where I heard that RCI served Pepsi products. I think it was from one of my friends at work, but she's sailed on so many different lines that I could have gotten them confused. I can live with Diet Pepsi but much prefer Diet Coke.

MTD--we prefer the flexibility so it is good to know that this is now available.

I've never yet met a mini-fridge that keeps things as cold as a regular refrigerator, but it's nice to be able to keep some sodas to enjoy on the balcony.

We were on the Celebrity Summit, which is comparable in size to the Legend, and found it a very comfortable experience, not as overwhelming as the extra-large to ginormous ships.

Debshomespun--lucky you to be getting out of this miserable weather. We're looking at a cruise in Feb. 2015 for that exact reason.

Thanks again to all of you for your reassuring responses.

  10. We have sailed Celebrity several times in the past and are now looking at a southern Caribbean cruise on Legend of the Seas. I realize this is an older ship, without many of the things RCI is noted for, but this is not a big issue with us. We are a group of 4 adults, 2 retired, and tour more for the itinerary than for the ship.

I have heard that RCI has Pepsi products rather than Coke, and there is no "select" or "anytime" dining option. only fixed seating. DD has heard that there are no mini-fridges in the cabins. What else can we expect?

I should add that we are not going be booking any sort of suites--an oceanview or balcony is fine with us.

    Thanks,

    Kathy
