  1. For those of you who have been before, what do you suggest? It is down to the Mendenhall Glacier, the gold mining excursion with Carnival going down to the mine before panning for gold, or a whale watching excursion with Harv and Marv (or do you have another suggestion for the whale watching?)

Our excursion did whale watching, then Mendenhall. They are both great, but whale watching is pretty amazing.

  2. For the most part, you are in the shade, even when walking to the caves along the path (because of all the trees). If you wear sunscreen, you should be fine for those few areas that the sun shines through. :)

    Sounds great! Thanks!

  3. Disagree with this one regarding Coba.

Much of Coba is amongst the trees. We were there in the month of March and while we had sunscreen, did not at all feel like we were 'out in the sun' during our visit. I think the ONLY time we were not protected by some shade was at the large pyramid that can still be climbed...that was not protected.

Disclaimer...have not been to Tulum. All I know is what I've read and seen in pictures...that those ruins ARE pretty much out in the open sun, and you cannot climb on anything there.

Something to like about both. I like the shade of Coba but the option of seeing a beach at Tulum. Hmm.

  4. Tulum is on water and has a more laid-back feel. Personally I'd recommend Tulum but Coba is interesting as well. If, however, you can get to Chichen Itza then do that. A spectacular site to see.

I like seeing beaches, so maybe Tulum would be a good choice. Thanks!

  5. If you go to see Tulum, Coba or other ruins on the mainland you will take a ferry to Playa del Carmen (about 45 min) followed by a bus tour to the ruins (1-2 hours depending upon destination) and then you will spend time touring the ruins and reverse your trip back to the ship.

I would save touring ruins on the mainland for a time when you have a mainland port visit or a vacation to PDC or Cancun. Your call. :)

    Okay, thanks!

  6. We will be in Cozumel in March and we want to see ruins but the trips seem like they last all day in the sun. I get sunburned very easily, so I was wondering which ones are the shortest and/or ones with some shade. I know this might be asking a lot.

  7. HI! My family and I will be going to Belize in March and I want to go cave tubing. My issue is that I get sunburned really easily and I didn't know how much of the tubing is in the shaded caves and how much is out in the sun. I need to plan accordingly.

  8. You know what switchbacks are, right? You mentioned you are nervous about driving there - are you considering renting a Jeep?

[EDIT] Disregard, I'm sure you're talking about taking a taxi.

I understand the roads on many of the islands can be scary to some and there's nothing wrong with that.

If you are interested in a nice beach without the "thrill ride", search this forum for my other posts on Long Bay (West End) and Marina Cay. Both are excellent options for a nice beach with a much flatter drive!

I do know what they are and I am glad for them. What I hate are the narrow roads without railings. Do they have that stuff there?

Yes, I don't think I would want to drive nor would my husband. It will be taxi I think. Thank you!

  9. I stood out by the road on Windy Hill when we were staying at the Heritage Inn and 25 passenger taxis were taking folks up around the switchback right there thinking I'd get a good video of folks screaming for youtube. Nothing - just people enjoying a nice leisurely ride to CGB.

Videotape me. I will be screaming. I really want to go to CGB, so maybe I will just close my eyes.

  10. After returning from my Fathom cruise where I spent 3 days docked in Amber Cove, I wrote this informative guide to Amber Cove! There's many details about how this port is a destination in itself.

All about the activities you can do there, spending time at the Fathom Impact center, the shopping, where to find Wi-Fi, water sports, ziplining, swimming, and more.

You can find it all on my blog here:

Please feel free to ask me any questions that you might have about Amber Cove!

    That is so pretty!

  11. The ride was a little on the adventurous side, but we have been on worse. Tortola has narrow, steep roads. It is not the place to rent a car on your own.

Can you expand on "adventurous?" I want to know what to expect, as I am nervous about driving there.

  12. just taxi over to CGB or Brewers Bay for a less busy alternative. Taxi fare to either beach is $8pp each way (1/2 fare up to 10 yrs old so use some creativity ;) )

I really want to go but am scared of the drive there from the cruise port.:(
