1. More general cruise comments:

    The Lido:

I really liked the Lido. Friendly staff , nice variety , pretty decor. The sandwich station was excellent for lunch. I felt the salad bar could have had more variety. Ex: on Celebrity , there is shrimp to put on the salads , which I like.

Good blueberry pancakes , nice pastries, good bacon.

One thing I liked on HAL food wise : the portion size. The desserts were dainty and the MDr portions were perfect. Nice.

Cleanliness: kudos... Impeccable ship , always cleaning!

Decor: the Eurodam is lovely , IMHO. Really loved the artwork , the chairs , the color scheme. Very pleasing , much more to my taste than RCI or Carnival . Celebrity is lovely as well , both get top marks in my book.

    How can bacon be bad:D?

  2. Nice touch with the birthday cake!

As always, we enjoyed Tamarind, except for the Tamarind Chocolate dessert, which had so much ginger in it, my wife actually became ill. It almost totally over powered the chocolate taste. Too bad, without the ginger, the dessert was a wonderful chocolate delight.

That's odd. I love that dessert and could barely ever taste the ginger. I wonder if you got a bad batch. I've had it many times.

  3. I used to use a site called tinypic , which is good , but time consuming...now I am posting directly from my phone with the Tapatalk app , veryyyy easy , but as I said , the size of the photos are all different on the PC , not sure why!!

But it is easy! Download the Tapatalk app and you can post photos directly.

I have that app on my iPad but I never use it :o. Looks like I should practice. I appreciate you answering my question:).

  4. Thanks ! Posting pics for the first time using Tapatalk... On Smart Phones the all look the same size , but on the PC they are all different sizes. Will try to figure out why!

Do you have to use a site first ie shutterfly or whatever it's called before you post? I'm thinking of doing a bit of posting from Alaska but I don't want to make it a painful experience. Thx.

  5. HAL surely expected a reaction but I wonder if they had any concept how strong a reaction would present. There are some truly upset folks here.

I'm happy we never got in the habit of bringing anything so this is one upset I don't have to get worked up about. :o I do understand the disappointment and even some of the anger but folks...... it's only wine. In the scheme of the world, a little perspective could be helpful.

Don't get me wrong. We like wine just fine and never have a dinner on HAL without a bottle of wine on the table or chilling in an ice bucket. But we manage to find wines from the list we can enjoy. Read it again..... maybe when given careful considertation you might find a few bottles that are to your taste.

I have to agree with you. I wonder if people that lost their houses in Calgary's flood last month would like to change places with some folks on here.

  6. I swore I would get off this thread but I can't resist...here's my response...

Hello, I'm your friendly bank - for years I was good to you and only charged you 5 % interest on your mortgage - starting tomorrow I will be charging you 25% interest. So your mortgage payment will now be x times what it was before.

come to grips and grieve and say thank you to our wide latitude over the years. It's a new day - adjust -= budget for a bigger mortgage payment and enjoy your home - cheers!

A slight exaggeration for sure - but no bank is allowed to just do this - I don't think any cruise line should be able to either.

Sorry, I'm not going to say thank you. When I booked I read know before you go - now it's changed with no consideration, no communication and no empathy and no notice.

I feel for those not on cruise critic. I really do.

With all due respect, how can you compare the 2? A starter house in Calgary would easily be $400K. Please explain to me how a drastic jump like that is the same as a change in wine policy because for the life of me I can't understand that.

  7. I can't see them either on my iPad. However the Facebook iPad app uses a different format than a regular computer page so that may be the issue. I must try it on the desktop computer which I rarely use these days.

Glad it wasn't just me. I did find it using my ipad. Most of the comments aren't worth reading because people seem a bit spoiled. When they start complaining about everything under the sun (not just the wine policy change) I think it's really in their best interest to look elsewhere.

  8.
I went to HAL's Facebook page and didn't see comments about the new Wine Policy. :( I hardly ever go to Facebook and when I usually leave wondering why I wasted my time. :)

The comments aren't glaring. You have to hunt for them. I find Facebook a waste of time for the most part. I had one of my so called Facebook friends telling me what an easy life I have because I cruise so much. Yeah, my life has been swell lately. Listening to people like that is a waste of my time. At least you can de friend people like that. I find it to be pretty much a wasteland.
  9.
right hand side - click recent posts by others on Holland America Line and then click see all posts - and I don't think you will see happy campers:rolleyes:
Ok, I found it now. Had to dig a bit. Frankly when people complain about everything ( not just the wine policy) it gets a bit overwhelming to read. I think some folks do expect to much from a mainstream cruise line. Again, I am not referring to the wine policy change but when they pull everything else into it they are not doing themselves any favours.
  10. I don't think anyone has actually said that, Lorene (I may be wrong, but can't go back and check every post:eek: - I just don't recall). The whole issue is not that HAL is bad, but that the way they have done this, is. They've basically shafted the clientele who are about to cruise.

There is one poster on here that always saying how great Celebrity is so great because they have free drinks for the higher level folks. That doesn't do anything for me I'd rather have good service and decent food. Clearly for some folks alcohol is king. It's just not that big of a deal for me so I don't get it. I don't see it as such a breach but clearly other folks do. So be it.

  11. Ya but i think people are upset with the non communication, and implementation, as well as lack of choices. Had it been done differently, and there were more choices that compared with other premium lines, people would not be so upset.

The lack of communication is sorta shady. If I remember correctly Princess just had it print on your luggage tags so no better. You could be correct about doing it differently but you know some folks would not be happy no matter what. I really feel Hal will do adjustments.

  12. Def not better! More suite perks, yes, and amazing all inclusive beverage package, persian gardens nice too, great wine list. Thats it for me, in other ways they are not better.

If HAL inproved wine list and bev package, (and didn't implement this after people gave them money in good faith under the old policy)

like if they advertised it for all new cruises booked moving forward) then we would stick w HAL...

There would be nothing wrong w it.

I don't think it s/b an expectation that Hal or any other cruise line will not change policies just because you book and pay with them unless its something serious like a smoking policy change. Things change, I think we all know that.

  13. I don't think anyone made that statement Lorene:confused:

But I could have missed something.

the point is there are mass market lines and upscale lines that permit wine.

The point is that things have been changing on HAL. I've been pretty tolerant all along (I think I have been called a cheerleader) but this is not something I support. Remember, we tend to sail in Europe.

The whole concept that the rule would be the same for a 7 day cruise or a 30 day cruise or a 60 day cruise or even a world cruise is ludicruous.

anyways, we can agree to disagree - you know i didn't like Celebrity - but you know what? the N Amsterdam was a huge letdown too. Not at the bottom of the barrel but I certainly wouldn't have recommended anyone be on that cruise.

We have lots of loyalty numbers - NCL, Celebrity, Princess and one pile of points with a couple - so why not try one of them or go upscale - after all if I have to pay top dollar for a lower level wine all the time (not just at dinner or in the bars) - and, if I am not going to book a suite on HAL - then that changes a lot of things.

Each to their own - we all have choices - and if this policy remains as is, we have made ours!

It just seems to me that folks just think that every line is so much better. Or the great suggestions to drain the pool etc. I'm a put your money where your mouth is person. There was a time several years ago that I was fed up with Hal. I didn't step for on a Hal ship for a few years. That's a long time for me. I don't blame people one bit for being upset about this policy but to carry on to the absurd is another. You never entered my mind for one second so these comments don't have anything to do with what you've said.
