  1. We did Ronnie Harrington's excursion last month on our way back from the Amazon.

Ummm...guys....if I'm not mistaken, this guy is Ronnie Carrington -not Harrington.

I went to school with the guy, and yes, he's a successful local photographer, a tall black guy.

Just thought you'd appreciate the name correction if you ever went Google-ing him or anything.

    Carrington -not Harrington, okay?

  2. Wow - from June to August, the price has gone up to $75 PP !!!!!!!!!!
Yes, just like the cost-of-living on the island has gone up...

just like the cost-of-living in the US has gone up..

..just like the cost of oil has skyrocketed suddenly

despite demand rising at its normal steady rate

    - Geez I wonder why (in all three cases!) :D

  3. Is it a realistic plan to take a water ferry over to Front street and walk around back to the ship?
The realistic plan is to use the Water Taxi back to the dock area

especially since your $6 entitles you to ride it whole day back and forth, anyways!

The walk back is a bit much, and thru uninteresting area.

  4. It was entertaining no doubt

    but.. that's not a review.

That amounts to a very long comment

and in two months time will be lost in the annals of ordinary cruise critics comments, as will this.

I'm hoping he also took the time to write it where he should have,

over on the real reviews section at

    http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/index.cfm

where all reviews live on for eternity.

Too many people think they're writing reviews within these notes and comments

    and they suffice for now,yes..

but only real reviews stand the test of time, lasting years and years

for the whole world to see.

    Go over to

    http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/index.cfm

and read the many lasting reviews on the ship of your choice

some of them dating back years and years!

Have you written your (real) review) yet?

or was it just another one of these passing comments?

  5. Donald's photo is very nice.

He mentions tripods at night - but unfortunately, tripods are only good for subjects that don't move.

Taking photos of ships sailing at night is very difficult as you have to get a fast enough shutter speed to stop the motion of the ship. Not easy. I have not had a lot of success at that even though I have a digital SLR that goes up to ISO 3200 and I can push to 6400 or higher if need be.

About 2 wks. ago, I discovered there's a Night Shooting mode on the dial!

so that made life a little easier doing shots of departing ships in the gloom of dusk

and now just 2 days ago, I discovered a High ISO Auto function

so I'm still playing with this computer that happens to be also a camera.

    There's also a Tungsten setting

that gets rid of the warmer colors of incandescent lighting...

oh this new cam is sooo cool! lots of toys to play with

    Tripod helps, yes

even if the ship moves while the harbour bits stay put and come out pin sharp!

I'm having fun doing comparative wonders with a point-and-shoot

well after my film days with Nikon F's, Nikonos-underwater;)

and even a Hasselblad SWC at one time

so I'm no amateur virgin to photography!

Best way to take pics of ships "at night" (anything at night)

is to not wait until it's pitch black,

but rather try to catch it in the darker-twilight period

when there is still some fading light in the sky

(dark blue as opposed to pitch black)

    - it still passes as 'a night shot', but often provides a background

dark enough but light enough for the ship's shape (or the bldg's shape)

to show up enough against the "night" sky and 'make sense' to the average viewer.

here's one last shot of Saga Rose

    that I don't think you've seen yet

and one of Queen Mary 2, taken just last week

    as she left after sunset.

  6. Thanks, aplmac, beautiful ship beautifully shot.

You have quite the photographic eye and a great camera.

Thanks for your kind words, all of you.

Glad to show you my pictures!

    In case you're interested..

I maintain a small website devoted to Cruise Ships visiting Barbados at

    http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/cncisland/bigships/btown.html

of which the recent Saga Rose is just one webpage.

On the subject of 'great camera'

you'll be surprised to learn that all I use is..

    a little Canon Powershot point-and-shoot model A 630

but yes it helps to know what you're doing.

Also, and this one day only(I don't know why!)

    I was using a tripod...for once!

mainly because I wasn't at my usual nearby camera position at the mouth of the harbour

and had to use an alternative position farther away

which necessitated much use of the telephoto setting

    - thus the forced use of tripod if I wanted decently-sharp shots.

Apologies for the boring photographic details

Here are two additional shots I didn't use on the webpage.

  7. beauty is quite painful, isn't it?

please send me the guy's shack directions so i can get another 4 inches or so.

then i can reach the cabinets in the kitchen in addition to being closer to the appropriate bmi.

It's cheaper you buy an around-the-house stepstool from CostCo!

  8. I've lived most of my life on Barbados

    (where we eventually grow shorter,

but that's Old Age spinal compression, squished vertebral discs,etc.).

Twice now, I've visited Martinique (many years ago)

first time I stayed 3 wks. - the last time just for a long weekend.

I thought I'd grown taller after the visits,

but now that Old Age onset is reversing the trend,

I'm worrying that maybe I should schedule another visit soon!

Also, I hear there's a shop in a seedy little back street,

where a tall dark African guy will stretch you a centimetre or two

on a leftover RACK machine (Inquisition, etc.)

but it'll cost ya close on 100 Francs for the 15 minute session!

  9. I went to my photo album, opened this particular picture, and right-clicked on it, then chose "Copy Image Location."

Then, in this post, I clicked on the "insert image" button,

and then pasted the copied image location into the space provided

    Thanks for explaining:

it was working well, right up to when the pic was supposed to load

    - and then up came Angelfire's idiot icon...grrr!

    seems they don't allow cross-linking,

so if anyone's trying to link to an Angelfire pic of theirs

doesn't look like it's gonna work, dammit.

    What a bummer

Gotta find myself another place - maybe webshots
