  1. Right, absolutely.

If the TA can't do anything, the OP could ask at the Front Desk if there is anything more amenable available.

They won't be able to anything at the Front Desk until 1/2 an hour after the ship has sailed from Canada Place. The Front Desk has to check with Seattle.

Suggest you go to Front Desk after your board and ask them to check with Seattle after the ship has sailed. Only Seattle will know the inventory on what cabins will be available.

If I were you I'd graciously accept the upgrade. The Inside passage has pretty calm waters so you won't have to worry about motion in the OV cabin. I'd ask your cabin steward to separate the beds so that you have a good view out the window. I've had 7 cruises to Alaska with Hal.:)Do enjoy your cruise. The Volendam is a great ship.

  2. Google whale watching in Seward. I went on a tour a couple of years ago and saw wonderful sites including a family of Orcas sleeping. The Captain of the vessel knew where to take us to see several sea mammals and nesting Puffins. Tour also included a wonderful lunch of Prime Rib [the best I have ever had in my life] on Fox Island. You could also pre-order King Crab for an additional $20.00. This tour was worth every penny I spent. They met me and returned me to the cruise ship dock in Seward. You will have ample time to do this.:)

  3. how long does it take, once home from last cruise, to get the mariner days updated on your profile?

I remember in the past it has been posted as soon as 4 days after....

what is the official statement from HAL regarding this, and what has been your recent experience with receiving days credited?

    Carol

I was recently told 11 days by Guest Services but told them it was still not done. They told me to contact the Mariner's Society which I haven't done yet. It's now 15 days but no account for my April 2015 cruise on the Westerdam.

  4. I read somewhere the other day that if you rent a refrigerator they place it on the desk or under the desk.

Looking at the video HAL has on their website or room interiors it doesn't appear there is room on the desk under the TV for a small fridge.

So I guess that means they have to either put it under the desk(where you would put you legs if you were sitting there). Or right in front of the mirror.

Since my wife sits at the desk to do here makeup and hair I'm thinking renting a fridge for our upcoming Statendam cruise is probably a bad idea!!

Can anyone confirm my theory on fridge placement? :)

We were just going to use it to keep pop (aka soda) cool so it's not a big deal.

    Thanks in advance.

The cooler would be placed under the desk, therefore no room for your wife's legs. I'd just ask your cabin steward for a large wine bottle ice bucket if you are only trying to cool a couple of cans of soda. You could probably keep this on the floor beside the desk as I did recently on the Westerdam. Enjoy your cruise on the Statendam. She is a lovely ship.

  5. The Old Sitka Dock at Halibut Point aka Sitka Ferry Terminal is a pretty rudimentary affair with a one berth dock and a pre-fab type of building with no facilities (unless they have added those since last time I was there). There is nada around there within walking distance. The buses park on the gravel road.

It's a choice between a relatively short tender ride to Crescent Harbor, right smack in the middle of downtown Sitka or docking at Halibut Point and taking a one hour bus ride into Sitka proper

I would much rather take a short tender ride. It is so picturesque. I would not want the one hour bus ride.

  6. We live in IL, about 10 miles from Missouri, where I buy 120 mm's for about $32 USD/carton. "More cancer for my money!!"" If I lived in NY, I'd have to move to backward Missouri, where I grew up.

FYI: retired attorney, 66 year old in excellent health

You are still not scot free from disease. Last year I was diagnosed with COPD having smoked 54 years. When I was diagnosed I was already smoke free for 3 years.

  7. We were booked on a 25 day cruise out of Sydney, but will be cancelling it on Monday and re-booking a Caribbean cruise instead. Thanks to this wonderful web site, I found out that Australia taxes a carton of cigarettes about $80 and my husband's 5 pack of cigars about $40. Given the length that we were to be gone from home, and the costs of tobacco products in Australia, this would add about $1,000 to our cruise. While we could afford that, it is a matter of principle.

Please don't flame me about smoking. I am posting this so that some naïve person doesn't get off his or her plane in Australia and be hit with this shocking tax!!

We all vote with our dollar.

A carton of 200 cigarettes will cost you around $110.00 in British Columbia. Most of this is called a sin tax. Sure glad I gave it up 3 years ago. One year of smoking in British Columbia at a pack a day equals a 7 day cruise.

  8. We have done the Westerdam's repositioning a few times and she has never left on time.

In fact, in 2013, we left around 7 PM.

Good grief. I plan to be in Crow's Nest for sail-away next week. However if departure is that delayed I wont stay and wait. Don't want to drink that much before dinner. I'll be here today for sail away but won't wait beyond 5:00 PM.

  9. Welcome to Cruise Critic. So glad you enjoyed your Westerdam cruise. I'm looking forward to checking her out very soon. I'm not a fan of the Vista ships and prefer the R Class, the Amsterdam being my all time favourite. Glad you are happy with Hal. It's obvious I am since I am 4 Star and soon to be 5. Happy planning of your next cruise on one of these Dam ships.

  10. We were on a B2B and it was cancelled the first week but we did have it the second week. Just wish it wasn't on the last night. Well worth it!!

The Master Chef's Dinner is never on the last night. You have to pay for the Master Chef's Dinner, not that sorry mess on the last night held in the MDR.

  11. I have often read posts where CC members ask who the Captain, HD, CD etc are going to be on a cruise. Can I ask the OP why this is important? My thoughts - I pick the itinerary - the ship for that itinerary is a given - there will be a Captain and officers and staff.

Ever heard of curiosity killed the cat? Quite often a well liked Captain and Hotel Manager by the crew makes a happy crew. I also like to know the Beverage Manager. Some are knowledgeable and others don't know their butt from their elbow and are not worth consulting about wine. That is why I ask those questions of Copper.
