  1. Sorry but the search engine is still down so I can't search, but has anyone been on the Seven Fathoms rum factory tour and can give a report. Also is it still located above Hammerheads - I thought I read they were getting a new factory? Thanks

  2. We will be in GC in March and would love to have a tour of the island with a guide that can tell us about the culture, places, etc. Can anyone please suggest a private operator that we can contact that is affordable and safe? There will be four of us.

We enjoyed a tour a few years ago with Cayman Safari.

    http://www.caymansafari.com/cayman-adventures

I just checked the website and found they are now offering several tours. We basically did the original east safari.

  3. Has anyone ever done the Cozumel Bar Hop to the Eastern side of the island? We are going to be there in May and was thinking about doing this so we can get the chance to see the eastern side of Cozumel. It gets really good reviews on trip advisor.

Normally the search engine of this forum would give you several threads on this subject but since the search is still down here are a couple of recent threads

We have taken this tour and enjoyed it!

  4. I am running into the same thing with Park Royal. I've gotten responses from other places - but none from them. Doing more research (first time we have been to Cozumel) I am finding other AI resorts a short taxi ride away for same price as El Cid - and they have beautiful beaches.

If I hear back from Park Royal I will post.

    Thanks let me know!

We have been to Cozumel many times and I have never had a problem getting a reply from Park Royal but I have tried a couple of addresses and no reply this time. I have not been there on a day pass but I have looked round.

I have been to El Cid several times as we find it convenient when we don't have long in port, or are looking for an easy day for a few hours. They have several prices depending on where you buy from and what you want to cover. We just go with the "pay-in-the-lobby budget" pass which I believe is now about $17/18 with $10 credit for food and drink. This covers use of facilities such as WI FI and pool, but not AI. If I wanted AI there are better places for less money.

Of course you also have to take into consideration taxi fare to most of them and that depends on how many in your party.

  5. Where exactly do you go to buy the day passes? We are going in May and this looks just like what we are looking for.

    Thanks so much in advance!

You buy the passes for both hotels in the lobby.

However I have been trying several times recently, without success, to obtain up to date pricing and options from Park Royal for our upcoming trip. Previously they have been very quick to respond so I am wondering if there is a change in management or policy.

  6. I will visit Cozumel for the firs time in July. There are several posts regarding which beach is best, but are there any sights (museums, ruins, points of interest) I should make sure to see? We plan on shopping and hitting the beach for a bit, so something that will only take a couple of hours. :D

Brief description of things to see downtown here: http://traveltips.usatoday.com/things-walking-distance-port-cozumel-mexico-55864.html

Small museum, town square and old church downtown. Statues and monuments if you walk along the oceanside of the main street.

Small ruins and area around Punta Sur, with saltwater crocodiles and lighthouse, eastside scenery (all out of town and need a taxi).

For larger ruins you would need to take a day trip, through the cruise line, to the mainland.

There are photo tours, food tours and Amazing Race which include walking around and seeing sights.

  7. We'll have two 15 year olds, is this tour fine to go on with them? how is the atmosphere there, nothing to crazy and really drunk people there?

I think Tom has a policy of only booking over 18 year olds for this tour. You would be best to email directly and check.

  8. OK is Tours Plaza or Gerry there once we get off the ship in Cozume, or do you have to book them ahead of time? If they are there for us to ask if they would take us on a tour, do you have an idea what they charge per hour?

You need to reserve in advance. Google ToursPlaza for website with further suggestions for tour and prices. Very good at replying and efficient service.

  9. There is just two of us.... I'm a single mom traveling with a teenager.....

Although the taxi fares are for up to 4 people there are usually lines of people going to the popular beach clubs and it is usually possible to team up with another couple and share. Just confirm price with taxi before you get in. Prices are posted on a board at each pier.

  10. Is there any beach excursions that are you pay one fee and everything ( food, drink, loungers..etc) is included? Or should I book thru cruise line??

Many of the AI hotel resorts also offer day passes. Some are offered through Island Marketing or Cozumel Watersports, or you can email the hotels directly. Taxi fare to most resorts or beach clubs is between $15-20 each way for up to 4 people depending on which pier you dock at and which place you choose. If you dock at International or Puerto Maya you can walk to El Cid or Park Royal - not much beach but loungers, food, drink and pools available and no transport.

  11. Your best bet is to get a private driver for a couple of hours and have them take you over to the other side and hit all the same spots....and maybe a few more! Will probably cost about the same, and while you don't get the comeraderie or the free drink at each spot, at least you get to go there!

    I agree!

If we do decode to go the private driver route, any recommendations on who to book with and about what it should cost? We are down to crunch time here, with less than a week until we cruise, so I need to try to settle on something quickly! Thanks for any suggestions...

We have hired a private driver several times and done the Bar Hop. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but I agree exactly with Mrsfuzzmo, above.

We have always used ToursPlaza and had excellent service.

    http://www.toursplaza.com/eng/hiring-driver.cfm

Cost of the tour on a Car for up to 4 persons is usd$107.00 for the first 3 hours tour + usd$25.00 for each additional hour.

Cost of the tour on a Van for up to 9 persons is usd$195.00 for the first 3 hours tour + usd$40.00 for each additional hour, these prices are per vehicle not per person.

For two people the cost is about the same, without the "free" shots and comeraderie. Advantages are you are entirely in control of your schedule - where and when you stop and for how long - additional photo stops if you want.

You can always pick up a taxi at the pier if you know where you want to go:

    http://www.cozumelinsider.com/Taxipuertamaya?From=Transonczm

  12. Thanks for the info. I guess it pays to go to the ruins first, in which case leaving at 7am would probably be too early. Maybe split the difference and start at 7:30 and go right to San Gervasio?

We want to go downtown to do some shopping after the car tour. So finishing by noon local time wouldn't be bad.

As I said earlier timing depends on where else you want to visit. Do you intend to do a whole island tour and visit the east side for photographs, food, drink, Punta Sur, beach time? Or are you just concentrating on the ruins and downtown? This could influence which chocolate factory tour you want to take.

Also if you shop downtown, unless you are docking downtown, you will either have to include the shopping time in your tour time, or finish your tour downtown and get a taxi back to your pier when you are done. Depending on what you want to shop for there is shopping at all the piers but to see the old square area you will have to have a stop downtown. Your driver will be able to drive through most of the areas of the town and along the sea front to see the monuments.

After you meet your driver you will spend a few minutes discussing what you want to see, and what is important to you, and then he will be able to suggest a route. It is important at this time to communicate what is important TO YOU. From what you have said the only thing you need to decide in advance is which chocolate tour you want to take - if you are willing to take a chance I guess the driver could always phone the chocolate factory on the day to check on availability.

  13. Is it warm enough to go to the beach? I have never cruised in feb....

Generally speaking it is warm enough. We have cruised many times at the end of February and it has been warm but last year was certainly not what I would consider a pleasant "beach day" - it was windy and bordering on "cool". We went because we had a little one in our party who needed space to run around off the ship but if we had just been a couple I would have done something else. Definitely good idea to have a plan B.

  14. We are doing the Bar Hop in a few weeks, and am looking for real life reviews/opinions of each stop, ie: drinks, food, view, etc?

Punta Morena:This is a Beach Club with activities and swimming pool although it wasn't filled with water when I was there. Plenty of room to find a quiet spot, or join in the fun. Website which will have more details http://www.puntamorena.com.mx/

Coconuts:Bar situated on top of cliff with good views.

Playa Bonita: I heard the Margarita is huge and to share, also saw a pic of a whole fish platter that looked pretty interesting.

The margaritas are huge although you can buy normal individual ones if sharing isn't your thing! Of the four stops I personally find this one the least interesting. Mostly just a restaurant/bar overlooking the ocean - nice if you can get an oceanside table. I believe you can go down on the beach, which I keep meaning to do, although it is supposed to be much smaller than years ago due to erosion.

Rastas: Rastas is a much more laid-back casual "Bob Marley" beach bar with tables and chairs on the beach, or in the bar. Also another bar across the road at this location. We enjoy this rustic location. I understand the coconut shrimp are highly recommended but we haven't eaten there.

    Thanks!

    Hope this helps.

  15. So, I realized that I had my reservation for next week at 8am ship time, which is 7am Cozumel time (the ship arrives at 7am ship time). I'm thinking that I should push it back an hour and get picked up at 8am Cozumel time. The only problem is that we have a relatively short time in port, we leave at 4pm ship time, 3pm Cozumel. I emailed Sofia and she said most people get an 8 or 9am local time pickup, but agreed that given our short time there, 7am wasn't an entirely bad idea. Wondering what the consensus here is.

PS to badwine - Did you have reservations at the chocolate factory, or did you just show up? Also, did you bring some sort of reference material for San Gervasio, or did you just walk around and explore? One of the other people we're traveling with says she needs a guide because she wants to ask lots of questions. Oh, and is the $9 to get into the ruins cash only, or do they take credit cards?

Really depends on how much you plan to see and do. Assuming you want to be back at the ship buy 1-2pm local time you would still have 5+ hours starting at 8am. Depending on where you want to visit consider a complete tour of the island as a clockwise or anti-clockwise route so that you are not back tracking too much.

The ruins open about 8am I believe and it is recommended to arrive earlier rather than later because of the heat and to avoid the tour buses. Gerry, or whoever your driver is, should be able to advise you of the best time. Here is a link to a good map of the site which will show you the main area and outlying buildings. It is supposed to included an audio guide for purchase but I was unable to get the link to open.

    http://www.tektrek.com/images/san_gervasio.pdf

This is the brief description I took with me although each ruin has a description in front of it, if I remember correctly.

    http://moon.com/2014/01/maya-archeaological-sites-on-isla-cozumel/

If your friend requires more than that I think she will have to hire a guide, or purchase the book I suggested earlier. I think the ruins are cash only but we visited a few years ago and that may have changed.

Tours for the chocolate factory are at 9am, 11am and 1pm. They only take 12 people for each tour so if there are a few of you in your group and you really want to take the tour I would suggest booking in advance. You would need to decide which time fits your schedule best and work from there for the rest of your route. Perhaps Sofia would be able to help.

  16. We want to have our driver to visit Cozumel in few weeks. I saw for Tour Plaze that people had a good experience. What about the "Black Hat", anyone hired him ?

Is it more safe to go with Tour Plaza ? Please I need advice on this. Black Hat already told me he has availabilities for us...I just need to confirm the time and the boat and he said I have to pay him cask at the end of the day....Please if someone can help me ? Do you know him ? THanks

Plenty of recommendations for both companies on this thread if you scroll back. Black Hat is also Cresencio Lopez. He has substituted for ToursPlaza in the past so I would be comfortable with either company although I have only used Tours Plaza from personal experience.

  17. That's my understanding as well.

Back in the old Fin and Flippers days, when you could only dock in Coxen Hole. It was a 5 minute walk to the small pier where their launch picked you up. But you had to make ressies so they would know you were coming. Cheaper then too. (~$35 pp IIRC)

If you are coming from Mahogany Bay, part of the cost is transportation related. But a large part of the cost is what gets shared with the crusie lines (50%+). Resort owners have found that in lots of cases the increase in customers is worth going the exclusive route as they net more $ too. Smaller excursions, like smaller boat snorkeling or sailing, though tend to find it not worth the hassle.

WE also did it in the old Fins and Flippers days - easy, convenient excursion to do on your own from Coxen Hole and PAYG for food and drink. Seems like a lot of money has been invested over the years and the island developed. Now the resort has to be booked exclusively through cruise line with more structure with regards scheduling.
