  1. The problem is that even with their fly cruises for this year, many ports are still visited during a normal 14/17 southampton cruise. Why not base the ship in Crete (Like OV used to be) and this gives you access to places that Southampton cruises cant offer. This, i believe, would sell much better.

  2. We have done lots of cruises with P&O but have never attended or liked any of the sailaway parties. Nothing wrong with having a party if thats what you like and nothing wrong in being proud of your country but to play the theme from the Dambusters and wave Union Flag at a German cruise ship is the height of bad manners and is embarrassing and P&O and the Cruise Director should be ashamed to allow it to happen.

This happened on Ventura in 2009 in Antigua. The Germans on Mein Schiff joined in and started waving white flags. Then each ship greeted each other with a round of applause. Quite touching actually.

  3. I think it's very unfair to mention names of staff on a public forum. Especially when they cannot reply. How would you feel if it was you or a member of your family or a close friend who was being publicly criticised?

If you have problems with a cruise member of staff then raise it on board and fill in the post cruise survey and if you wish to follow up with a letter then write privately to the cruise company.

They can reply by improving. He clearly doesn't.

  4. Seconded. If it was a cabin steward or a bartender then no, but a cruise director is probably the most high profile person on the ship besides the captain (on some ships more than the captain), and is therefore subject to criticism. We should be allowed to discuss someone who plays a pivotal role in the cruise experience.

I agree. The CD is listed as a Senior Officer. If they do not perform then they should accept public criticism.

  5. The only P&O CDs I ever hear good things about are Neil Oliver and Leon De St. Croix, but I don't know if the latter is even still with P&O. Like many others, I thought Hughie was a terrible cruise director, especially on a ship like Ventura which needs a CD who is friendly and energetic, not someone who leaves everything to

It is a shame really, since there were some fantastic entertainment staff on Ventura, some of which would make perfect cruise directors.

I believe Leon is currently with Cunard.

  6. Hughie is terrible. Been on two cruises with him as CD. His Wife is deputy cruise director and she is just as useless. They make sure they are there at the Captains Gala and get interviewed for the TV show but thats about it. THey dont really get involved in the sailaways and leave all the durty work to the rest of the Ents crew. I have yet to come across a decent P&O CD. Joff Eaton (former P&O) on RCI is fantastic.

  7. It is the airlines that set the weight not the cruise ships. And 23 kilos is standard. We have always had that restriction in Australia.

Not strictly true in P&Os case. They charter the plane and crew. This means they own the freight capacity of the flight. On the outbound flight P&O will sell freight capacity as their is demand to get produce to Barbados. This demand does not really exist on the inbound flight. This is why there isn't really a weight restriction on the way home. The outbound flight has a defined luggage volume so they know how much freight weight they can sell.
