  1.

Additionally, all ships have ample lounge chairs and hot tub space. Sorry if that was too much, just hoping to be able to give you all the information you need to decide which ship is best. (I’m very detailed as you can tell!)

No such thing as too much information on this site! At least regarding cruise ships. Thanks.

  2. People take food from the Windjammer, and other cafes, to many different places on the ship. A cabin is just another place. I don't see that a trying to avoid room service charges. To someone like me who tends to prefer doing things for himself instead of being waited on, it seems like a very natural thing to do.

It's even better if your awesome husband will go get it for you, then you are still waited on. That's what happens in my family.

  3. I always buy Euros from my bank (Chase) before I leave, no fee. I don't bring too much, just enough for tips etc. You can almost always use a cc for everything. Many cards do not charge foreign transaction fees.

  4. Thank you for your concerns everyone! Very much appreciated. Have sought medical attention and am happy to report it appears to just be anxiety as everything else looks good! I learned today that typically it is the right arm that feels numb when having a heart attack, and it can be a sign of a stroke when the left arm feels numb or tingly. I can't recall if I mentioned that on the plane it was my left arm feeling tingly.

You have that backwards, left arm is heart attack. Also women tend to have more atypical symptoms. Glad you're ok.

  5. I haven't been on RCCL for a few years; so my perception by what is talked about here is that one cannot get food 24 hrs/day unless you want to order RS for $7.95? No food venues (that are included with the cruise fare) are open for late night or 24 hrs?

    Safe sailing!

On Freedom and Oasis class Sorrentos is open until 2 or 3 am, and cafe promenade (sandwiches, cookies, cake) is 24 hours.

  6. Too bad.

I was playing with the app just now, and you can manually select a cruise in the preview function (start with "more details on ships we support"), and access the daily planner, deck plans, etc. So I picked the one leaving 7/22 and was able to see all the activities for my embarkation day (day 5 of that week), menus, etc.

That could also be useful for those who love to plan ahead, as of today you can select all the way up to the 8/5 sailing.

  7. I've also seen it both ways, on Princess they changed ship's time during a Caribbean cruise, on RCCL never.

The good news is that it's always made very clear so no one misses the ship. If ship's time and port time is different there are many signs, reminders etc.

It is only an issue if you are booking a local tour in advance and need to coordinate meeting times. You can always google the port and there will be a schedule of ship's arrivals in local time so you can use this as a reference.

I just use my world clock on my iPhone, one clock is always set to ship's time as a reference.

Here's some interesting history, in the days of sail, they took a daily "noon sighting" of the sun with their sextants, which was easy because it was simply when the sun was at its highest angle above the horizon as measured with the sextant. They then declared it noon on the ship and started the day's watch schedule etc. Thus the "ship's time" changed gradually a few minutes per day as they sailed around the world.

  8. For those who have to have access for work; that's not a robust system. If somebody can't go out of contact for a week then there are some serious problems with delegation and authority.

That is an assumption on your part. In my case, as a physician who is highly specialized and one of only 6 in the state (and the only one at my hospital) no one knows my patients as well as me and there is no way for me to delegate that. If a quick text or email can save someone from being unnecessarily hospitalized by the person covering me who probably has never seen that patient before then I'm willing to take 5 minutes out of my vacation to respond. Technically I am not required to be reachable when I'm off but I would be sad if something bad happened to someone because I could not be reached.

Also, the regulatory requirements for the type of program I'm involved with specify that someone with my role must always be available by phone, and right now I'm the only one with that role, so I have to be reachable or the program closes. We have been trying to recruit a second for a year now but it's not easy.

Ironically, many of the folks on this board who are aghast at those of us who get wifi on a cruise are the same people who will freak out if they are told their regular doc that knows their complex case is not reachable. Of course that's another assumption but pretty safe I think.
