  1. Ron_L... I read your Breeze review and enjoyed it very much! I liked your attitude....very laid back and positive, but yet honest. Just wanted you to know. :)

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback! We had a great time, but there were some things that folks should know about. None of them were cruise-breakers :D

  2. I'm sorry that you ran into that "freakish lady" and the unruly kids! the day that we were at Nachi was much quieter. it was our group of 12 plus to other couples and that was it.

We also abandoned the beach fairly quickly for the not-so-hot tub (I was wondering at the flow over design, too) and spent most of the afternoon there.

mitsugirly - I see in your signature you are going on the Jewel - what is the date of your sailing? (I'm too tired to figure out what 11 months, 3 weeks, and 1 day is!).

I am 95% sure that we are going to be on the Jewel December 8, 2013.

My wife and I will be on the Jewel for the December 8th sailing. If you decide to join us there is a small, but growing roll call thread tht has been started...

  3. Sorry to keep posting but Post #7, in the above thread has the Grand Turk, San Juan, etc. Funtimes. The earlier post is another itinerary.

That's my post. Thanks for the link :) Unfortunately, those are for the St. Thomas, Antigua, Tortola, Nassau itinerary, not the one with Grand Turk, San Juan, Tortola and St. Thomas.

  4. I know this place use to be called Fins and Flippers, but their cups said "Anthony Key Resort". I'm just wondering if they use to be called this too? Or these cups were donated by someone? Or this is their aka name? Anyone know?

When we were there in 2009 the cups said Anthony's Key Resort, too. Back then Anthony's had either complete or partial ownership of Fins and Flippers. Since the cups are the same I suspect that they still own at least part of Maya Cay.

  5. I am looking for the Fun Times for 8-Day Breeze sailing with stops in Grand Turk, San Juan, Tortola and St. Thomas. Has anyone seen a copy of these Fun Times? Thanks in advance.

If all else fails, I posted links to the Fun Times for the other 8-Day eastern route in my review (linked below). The Fun Times for St. Thomas and Tortola are probably the same.

  6. Thanks for the great pictures at Maya Cay! We were there in 2009 when it was still Fins and Flippers and loved it! I was very happy when I read that you can stay all day! I was disappointed when I read the NCL description that showed a duration of 4 hours!

I know that you haven't gotten to the snorkeling part yet, but I'm jumping the gun :D Do they still rent fins at the gift shop? We normally bring our own masks and snorkels but not the fins.

  7. I did do a lot of reading up on Goff and was almost going to go there until I found out about the Starfish at Bannister. So, I thought I would give it a try and I'm glad that I did.

Yea, I have read people say they "do the snorkeling tour" with you and you pretty much can't go off on your own, except right there in front of the beach, which there wasn't anything to see from what I had heard. If we went there, it would just have to be a "lazy beach day" and I'm fine with that. Did you have to pay extra for the snorkel "tour"? Just wondering. I don't recall if people ever said.

I just went and read your review and it looks so pretty there and VERY small of course (which I already knew). But it definitely looks like a place I would love to visit. I just can't imagine 100 people being on the island as small as it is. How far off the shore is the actual reef for snorkeling?

Sorry... I just saw this. Things got busy her :)

When we went on the Carnival excursion everything was included. At the time it was around $50. They split the snorkeling into two groups, one who left from shore and one who went around the other side of the island by boat. My wife wanted to go with the shore group so I stuck with her. We were never more than 50 yards from shore and when we reach the end of the island we saw the boat group and they were about 75 - 100 yards from shore.

As far as the crowd, it really didn't feel crowded. Even when we went to eat we didn't have to wait. It's small, but people were doing different things. We enjoyed the finger of sand that is in our pictures and there were a few other couples walking there, but most were in the water or on other parts of the island.

  8. I've noticed one of the main complaints is cold food and slow service in the MDR. Kind of hard to make the most of that, unless you give up on the MDR and go to the Lido Buffet each night.

True, but it wasn't the case for everyone. We were on the upper level of the Blush DR and had Mikhalo as our head waiter and he did an excellent job and we never had cold food. The food that he brought wasn't always good, but he got it there quickly and it was hot

  9. You're welcome. No, Parrot Tree is not for snorkeling. The swim area is in a lagoon with sandy bottom. There's really nothing to see. Parrot Tree is perfect for a relaxing day, but definitely not for snorkeling.

Thanks! That's what I suspected from the pictures. We'll still keep it in mind. we have plenty of time to decide :D

  10. Thanks for the review, Paul.

We're doing the same itinerary on the Jewel in December so the pictures and information on the ports are helpful.

At Parrot Tree beach resort is there any place to snorkel? Right now I'm leaning towards Maya Cay since we were there when it was Fins and Flippers and I know the snorkeling is great, but the pictures of Parrot Tree are beautiful.

  11. I will be booking a cruise soon but I can't seem to choice between a cove balcony and ocean view. Which do you think would be better?

That's really up to you and your budget. We loved our cove balcony! I would sit out there every morning with a cup of coffee and a bagel from room service and either enjoy the ocean or the sights and sounds of the current port. We were closer to the aft (cabin 2368) and had some spray on the balcony on the roughest mornings but it was never bad, and the steward wiped the railing, table and chairs regularly.

Depending on how many people you will have in the cabin, you may want to look at the Deluxe Ocean View cabins, too. They are bigger than a regular OV and have an extra bathroom with a sink and small tub. That would be nice for three or four people.

  12. Maybe Goff Caye is in store for us next time. I know, it’s a REALLY small island and I have read up on it. But, it was our second choice. Hey, something different and new is always a plus right?

We went to Goff Caye off of the Carnival Valor in 2009. We booked it through Carnival for the same reason that you booked Bannister through NCL, they take you directly from the ship.

Goff Caye is small, but it was beautiful. There was even less facilities than your pictures show on Bannister. It was basically a dock, a small, open-sided shelter, and a portapotty. Carnival offered guided snorkeling but there were so many people in the water that there were no fish. At one point I wandered away from the group and found fish, but i was yelled at to get back with the group  They also had some guys there with a grill cooking chicken and I think burgers. The chicken was great!

We would go back to Goff Caye again but just not do the group snorkel. there was one area of the island where you literally could be alone and that was a great experience.

There are some pictures of Goff in my Valor review linked below.

  13. You must be on the Jewel either the week before us or after since I believe the Jewel rotates ports every other week. We are on the Jewel next December too (as you can see in my countdown) and we will be doing the Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and Cozumel I believe.

If like to do other exciting things other than a beach at these ports (Roatan, Cozumel, Belize, Costa Maya), I have other reports for different things to do. Last time we went zip lining, cave tubing...etc. I can show you the reviews if you are interested. ;)

Hmm, I have never really paid attention to what the web site said (about the all you can eat buffet). There was definitely not a buffet there and it was pretty much a "made to order" thing. It now has me wondering if they use to do that as well. We had an "Almaplena thread" going on over on the port boards you could proably chime in over there and see if anyone experienced the buffet and if they have ever done that.

Thanks... I'll check out the POC forum for Costa Maya. We've been to Roatan, Belize and Coz so i have good idea for those ports, but Costa Maya is new. So far it's between Almaplena, Maya Chan, Tropicante or 100% Agave. I have plenty of time to decide :D

We'll be on the Jewel for the Dec 8th sailing.

  14. I'm really enjoying your review! thanks for doing it!

We're doing this same itinerary on the Jewel in December (yeah, almost a year from now )

The web site for Almaplena shows that the Beach Break includes an "all you can eat buffet", but it seems like you were able to order food instead of a buffet. Is that an option or have they changed what they offer and haven't updated the web site?

  15. Poor girl is not getting stellar reviews..

I've noticed that, and I'm not sure why. Maybe I'm too easy going. Yeah, there were things that I would like improved, but overall the ship was beautiful and there was so much to do that we didn't get to all of it. We had a great roll call group, so maybe that helped?
