  1. My son & I did this a few years back. Syracuse, NY to Penn Station, switched trains to a sleeper car (roomette) very small but a lot better than just a coach seat. Included all meals which we found to be really really good. Arrived in Miami 7:p.m ish got a hotel & taxied to the pier in the a.m. then flew home. We are going to do this again in Aug of 2015. Again Syracuse to NY Penn Station then on to Miami in a sleeper car. Long ride but very enjoyable & as I said the meals were all included and were very good. We again will fly back home just because of the quicker time. 5 hrs vs. like 36 hrs total. Best of luck to you.

    Thanks Crystal -

I agree with you! Very nice to have the roomette and as you say the meals are really good! Also like you, we are flying back home. While DH is retired, I must get back to work on Monday. Also the return train is sold out, but flying home works just fine...

  2. We take the train to Florida (from Boston) for our transport to the cruise ports- nearly every year. We also get to port a day early.

The train ride this past March was very good. Our sleeping car attendants were helpful, the roomette was fine, the food was good, and we were on time.

Have fun and let us know how you liked your train ride.

    Thanks April -

Looking forward to it! Btw, where did you stay?

  3. Arriving that late (or later :o) you can save a few $$ by staying near the airport - several good hotel chains in the Blue Lagoon area near MIA (Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, Sofitel, etc.) with shopping and dining options nearby. A few of the budget options include a shuttle to POM - Comfort Suites North and Springhill Suites Medical Center are often suggested.

    Good luck! :)

    Thanks John -

We just stayed at the Comfort Suites for our 9/5 (NCL Sky) cruise. I kind of wanted something with nearby shopping, but I think we will stay there again. Really liked that hotel!

  4. Just so I have the right information, Comfort Suites at MIA has a shuttle at the airport if I come in at midnight and has a shuttle to the POM also? Since we're just there to sleep and get to the ship, it sounds perfect. We have never been to the POM so I appreciate all the information. :) Looking so forward to our 32 anniversary trip!

    Correct!

    Happy Anniversary! Enjoy your cruise!!

  5. Thanks y'all. I think we're going to go with the La Quinta by the airport. Good price, free shuttles, and it's only for one night. :)

I've stayed there a couple times when we've arrived about 930pm and found it just fine. But for my cruise last week, I switched because we were arriving close to 1100pm. LaQuintas's LAST SHUTTLE IS 1100pm! If you miss, you'll have to pay taxi.

So 2 days before we switched to COMFORT SUITES... LOVED IT!!!

24 HR Airport Shuttle + FREE POM SHUTTLE.

  6. I have not done this, but based upon my AMTRAK experience I would book to arrive at least one day early - the train is usually late! :(

The Miami station is out near the airport - you can cab to the usuall assortment of downtown Miami hotels close to POM for about $30+ and then catch another cab (about $12+tip) to the port in the morning. Hampton Inn Mary Brickell, Hyatt, IC, Marriott, Doubletree & Holiday Inn are all popular on this board.

Thanks... Yes, we will arrive a day early. We actually get in 7:00 PM the evening before. Surely hope there's not a delay more than 20 hours. Thanks!

  7. Hubby and I are taking Amtrak from DC to Miami for a 11/8/14 sailing. We are excited about our 24 hour relaxing train ride in our cozy roomette before our 8-day cruise. We did this about 10 years ago and really enjoyed.

Would love to hear how others have done it recently,

We usually arrive the evening before by air and stay at a hotel near the airport.

But I think Amtrak isn't quite near the hotel.

    HOW WAS YOUR TRAIN RIDE?

    WHERE DID YOU STAY?

HOW DID YOU GET FROM THE AMTRAK?

Any tips are greatly appreciated!! THANKS!:)

  8. THANK YOU THANK YOU. My wife and I are so happy.

Do you know if the restaurant menus are the same as the other ships? Cagney's etc...?

    You're welcome!

My guess is that the menus are the same, but I'm not certain.

We ate at The Palace and Crossings Restaurants.

We found everything we had was wonderful!!!

The captain mentioned they had just rolled out new menus.

  9. I know! I have been scouring the boards and Google-ing since we booked to see if there were any more current dailies listed anywhere. Another thing my son pointed out is that this set of dailies was so close to Super Bowl that the "Tailgate" is probably not on the list of things to do! However, it is football season again! LOL!

I would be so appreciative if you get a chance to somehow post your set of dailies when you return. We are going to have to plan as best we can with what we have and then tweak after your cruise if you do get a chance to post. We are leaving out on the 19th of this month!

I'm so excited, too! :D It's been 23 years since our last cruise and I'm hoping that this one goes so well that we will make cruising a common vacation plan!

Hope you and your sis have a wonderful trip! :)

    Thanks much!!!

And I will surely post the Freestyle Dailies when I return!!!! :-)

  10. Hi-

Thanks! I had seen this one, but was trying to find something more current. I sail this Friday :-)! I will post them when I return. I imagine things have changed. One major difference is that Nassau is the first port for us; whereas on this Jan sailing, Great Stirrup Cay was first.

    Your family cruise sounds fun!!

My 4 adult siblings and I did a cruise with our spouses and our parents and it was big fun, but this weekend, it's my sister and I. We're excited!

  11. Try booking through value trips for the Hyatt Place on 10th. They have rooms wih double beds plus a hide a bed couch, could then do just two rooms as long as everyone likes each other! Breakfast was fairly decent as well. They have a shuttle to the hotel from the airport and are within walking distance to the water taxi. We had four of us in a taxi along with luggage for the trip to the port, cost with tip was around $15 or so! Best part was it was a quick walk to Total Wine. I will be back here in October with my DD as we are flying into FLL for our NCL Getaway cruise out of Miami.

    snow bunny

I'm interested in this hotel for DH and me for our Nov 8 cruise out of Miami.

I've never stayed in FLL for a POM cruise.

How will you get to POM on cruise morning?

  12. Anyone have any insight into the following deal? I'm asking because we have to pay our last payment today and our cruise is one of the cruises listed as being able to use this voucher. I'm concerned that it says "full price cruise for one" - that this would be the highest and negate the good deal. Anyone have any insight into this?

    Thanks!

I also was considering an online deal like this I received today, but it just sounds too good to be true... and you know what they say...

Was hoping to find some success stories.

  13. Has anyone ever booked under This special? It says something about OBC and getting two additional cabins, but then when I select a sailing, no additional details comes up

Now the trick will be to figure out which snips/sailings it works on. I'll call my pvp tomorrow

I tried online and nothing was working. I just called and Carnival's system is down until 3AM ET. But the rep explained that each military person can get up to $50 OBC and 2 Category Upgrades for their cabin. In addition they can get the same deal applied to two additional cabins. Normally military discounts are only applied to one cabin per military person, but with this deal they can get it for their cabin + 2 more cabins for friends/family traveling with them.

The wording of the offer sounded like they were getting 2 (FREE) ADDITIONAL CABINS.

  14. Oops just saw that you are going to port of Miami from ft. Lauderdale. We rented a car last time we did that and it was just $35 total for the whole day. We stopped and got some wine and other essentials at the store and even had a nice meal at a cool restaurant before we headed to port for our cruise. Several car rental places has locations just a couple miles from port with free shuttles to the pier. Hope this helps. :)

Before boarding your ship, where do you drop off the car? Is there a car rental return at the POM? Thanks!

  15. Thanks for your responses. Looks like we will be lose about $1300 if we cancel in the next 2 days. After that, the full $1900. We'll need to decide what to do, and then I will at least call our PVP to see if she can help in any way. Just one of those things that happens that you can't foresee. Makes a good case for the insurance.

Anyone ever do a name change?

Is there any chance they could only charge a name change fee, if you possibly found someone who could take over your reservation?
