  1. First cruise I ever took this happened to me. Swore I would never cruise again, discovery: Meclazine 25mg (aka ‘Bonine’ , ‘less drowsy dramamine’ , ‘verticalm’). Take it now each evening for a few days & you should be good. For the future: start taking it 2 nights before cruise, continue each night of cruise and for 2-3 nights after cruise. My routine preventative regime. Has seen me through 30+ cruises.

I also am very prone to motion sickness s I always have Hylands Motion Sickness tabs on hand for the unexpected choppy water, rough tender o4 twisty turned Road on a shore excursion. Homeopathic miracle.

NOTE: You can get 100 tab bottle of Meclazine at Costco pharmacy window without a Rx for less than 1 box of Bonine.

  2. In the USA, credit card payment would carry an insurance benefit for situations such as the one you envision. However, some of the best laid plans come from necessary changes. If the cruise cancels you still have the USA as your destination and I would imagine a number of your fellow cruise critic companions would assist in suggestions that would allow you to plan an alternate trip that your dear husband would have enjoyed. You could always take him with you in spirit and delay formal remembrances for some future date. Wishing you peace and happiness with what I'm sure are wonderful memories.

  3. where are the current smoking places on the star? i have a port aft balcony under the horizon and want to make sure we aren't in a smoke part. we are down the hall from the terrace pool.

I did a thread search but it seems the posts were from a ling time ago, just wondering if there was anything more recent.

    Deleted post, had Wrong ship...

  4. We did this..... we were amazed at the kids activities & areas selected for them! More than most ships we've been on! We loved this ship & were comparing to Celebrity & Oceania ships too... it's well maintained & has lots of 'intimate' dining & entertainment areas..... you should have a wonderful time.

  5. We've done both September & October MED cruises (wonderful ports) and, no rough seas. April TA On smaller Azamara ship was AWFUL - but my Meclazine 25 mg each night starting 2 nights before cruse, continue throughout cruise and two night after, saved the trip. MED cruises were celebrity, solstice class ships. (Go to Costco pharmacy window & request Meclazine - 100 tab bottle around $10 - exact same as Bonine and 'less drowsy Dramamine' for a fraction of the price! Then, go online & find Hylands Motion Sickness tabs. Homeopathic little miracles, keep on hand for 'extra boost' if needed for rough tender, amalfi coast ride, etc..... I travel with both & am counting 30+ cruises & 100% success rate for preventing motion sickness! (Turning green is absolutely no fun at all & I would have stopped after my first cruise had I not discovered theses life-savers!)

  6. Having cruised extensively on Oceania (all ships!) (10+), Celebrity (20+) and only 2 on Princess I can give you some input......

Oceania WILL be an older crowd - we felt we were in the younger portion in our 60's!

Celebrity MUCH younger crowd, still oldies but lots more younger couples & families

Princess - similar demographics to Celebrity

We compared B2B Oceania and Celebrity cruise (air cost not considered because we flew with Frequent flyer points so you must add air cost/credit into your equation)(and yes, got off O in Barcelona and got on Celebrity 2 days later for SAME PORTS and same number of days) and evaluated categories from 1-10 with 10 being best....

    Service: O 10. C 9

    Food: O 10. C 8

    Specialty restaurants: O 10. C 8

    Balcony Cabin: O 10. C 10

    Entertainment: O 6. C 8

Ships shore excursions: both really expensive & not to our liking..... arranged our own through new friends on cruise critic roll call for a fraction of the cost and wonderful!

    Cost: O 10 (Expensive!) C 6 (Moderate)

(For cost we wanted to Make sure we were comparing like to like so we made sure we did same number of added cost items on.celeb that were included in Oceania - specialty restaurants, soft drinks, etc)

So for us it was a no brainer. We loved Oceania but really like to cruise so we cruised twice as much when we switched to Celebrity!

Now, Princess..... we find them quite comparable to Celebrity with a feeling if more intimate spaces, more small venues for evening entertainment choices and quite frankly, the steak house on Princess equals Oceania's.

So once you figure out cost of air & perk value you'll be able to choose cost. (check out air deals with your alternate cruise line, O really doesn't credit much towards air and if you want a deviation, they add on $100 or more to cost...)

You are young..... might feel (I can pretty much guarantee it) the older crowd with the more staid entertainment is not your cup of tea!!!

  7. Wander. get lost. Have a beverage of choice sitting 'on the ocean', find the windmills. Take 100 pictures of boats, blue roofed churches and windmills along with whitewashed alleys. Adventure with history? Take the water ferry over to Delos. (Plan ahead, ck times online before going) Walk the ruins, stop in the tiny museum. Lovely Mykonos.... Have one of the best days of your entire cruise!

  8. We Always arrange own private days.....

Sicily (Messina), Italy: Have been 3 times.... can hail when dis-embark or pre-arrange van/taxis to Taormina & wander. Stop for lunch in the square and meet your taxi/van back at designated spot for return to ship

Kotor, Montenegro: one of our absolute favorite/wonderful ports! Book the Kotor/Perast walking/boat tour with Adventure Montenegro (I have Perast photo as screen saver, look at it every day!)

Corfu, Greece : Do taxi tour with Spiros - he can arrange van for all or 'caravan'. We did Best of Corfu - about 5 hours - http://www.corfutaxitours.com/

Crete (chania), Greece-just take port transportation to town center & market. Poke around & - enjoy...(we did island tour, not worth it..)

Mykonos, Greece- take water taxi port bus into town, wander, get lost.... find the windmills....If you are adventurous & history buff, some of your party (not the children) might really enjoy ferry over to Delos . No guided tour needed.

  9. Port makes a difference. That said, Civitavecchia (Rome) port is the only port that hasn't had Taxi's available BUT Miami last winter was a really long line/wait. My bottom line? Have not found cruise option yet that was less than triple what we would pay on our own even with booking private car/van transfer ahead rather than grabbing a taxi at port. So, save some money & either do taxi or book your own ahead- check on your roll call if need/want to share......

  10. Does anyone know who Princess uses for their whale watching excursion - JHM-640 Maui?

I don't know, BUT: best whale watch we've found (eco, naturalist, NOAA support) is https://www.pacificwhale.org/cruises/ & it is easy walk to/from pier area, central Lahaina town..... hope that helps! (We are Big island residents who fly over to Maui occasionally just to whAle watch!) Sherri

  11. Sorry to bump an old thread, but are donuts still available for free at Bacio on the Eclipse?

Yes.... and their better (as are the cookies and cakes that they switch to around 10am) than anywhere else on the ship! I want a berliner!!

  12. Looking for personal experiences.... looking for a hotel for the night before our wedding cruise is March 2018. Is this a good place to stay? If not, what is your preference?

We stay at the Sheraton Airport - free transp from AP to hotel & very reasonable to cruise ship. caveat: I am platinum Starwood so always choose these properties - the points & perks really add up if you are 'loyal'. I never choose Ramada, would choose al,out any brand over Ramada.

  13. If you get car sick I would recommend a scrip from your doctor. They have the behind the ear patches,

    Scopolamine Transdermal Patch

    Janet,

It's my first time using CC so I don't know how to message you directly. I am hoping you will share your packing list with me (therese678@gmail.com) because yours is exactly what I need.

You have great suggestions that I don't want to forget.

    Thank you

    Therese

Scopolamine patches have side effects..... dry mouth etc. great to have as back up if other options don't do the trick. Best I've found is Hylands Motion Sickness tabs. Dissolve 2-3 under tongue every 2-3 hours - works even after symptoms start! I never ride in a car without it.
