  1. Juneau is great for whale watching and crab eating. Harv and Marv showed us a great time and lots of whales, sea lions, otters and bald eagles. Tracy's Crab shack hooked us up with very, very good King Crab legs and claws as well as beer and wine. Don't waste your time or $'s on the crab cake sandwich, get the legs....

    Strongly recommend both....

  2. We just got back from our Radiance cruise tour so our time of year is the same as yours. The weather in Fairbanks was warm, low to mid 70's. That was the end of warm weather. Denali was quite chilly, 50-60 but thankfully very clear. Saw the whole mountain and lots of wildlife. Talkeetna was cool and rainy. Juneau was cool but pretty calm which was nice for our whale watching tour. Saw many humpbacks, adult and juvenile, sea lions, otters and eagles. Other than Fairbanks it was quite cool. Raingear (Frogg Togg), long underwear, glove and knit cap are necessary.

Definately invest in a good telephoto lens. I recomend splurging and get a wide range tele. One that goes from 18 to at least 275 means you don't have to change lenses. I went with a 18 to 55 and a 70 to 300 and was changing lenses far more than I wanted too. My bro in law had the 18- 275 and never changed lenses. He got a whale breaching that I missed!!! Remember, it will quite likely be a long time (if ever) before you see these things again so to properly photograph, drop some coin on a lens.

Also, we did a floatplane tour out of Ketchican to the Misty Fjords with Island Wings. I STRONGLY recommend this.

  3. Hi Lovey!! We (wife and I) just got back from our Alaska trip. We did a cruise tour with RCI. Six days on land followed by 7 on the Radiance from Seward to Vancouver.

It was a wonderful trip with lots of wildlife and scenery beyond description. Here are a few things I would consider "don't miss" items...

    1. Whale watching trip, preferable smaller boat. We did 6 pax with Harv and Marv, Liz our naturalist/captain was great.

    2. Denali. Lots of wildlife and Mt Mckinley is truly breathtaking. We were fortunate to have full sight on a crystal clear day.

    3. If you can fit it in the budget, a flightseeing tour from Ketchican into the Misty Fjords. We uased Island Wings (Michelle) and it was the highlight of our trip. Magnificent views and a landing on a lake that was nothing short of specacular. The price was around $240 per person.

Good luck with your planning and feek free to ask any questions if you have anything specific I can help with. I intend to post a full review when I can. I need to organize more than 2,000 photo's first.

  4. OK, so that explains it quite nicely......

I could understand a moderate price increase, maybe 10%, but this is a bit insane. But we should all remember though, this is their (RCI) ball so they have every right to make the rules. I'm all about free market economics (I'm the owner of two retail stores) and if the market will bear this increase more power to them.

For many folks, I suppose this is not a huge deal. For others, my wife and I included, this is a very big deal. We drink 5 to 10 drinks each on sea days and maybe half of that on port days and I will be very uncomfortable with these prices.

We have a cruise booked on Oasis in a sky loft suite in October and I will be looking around at other possible choices. I know that NCL is offering free drink package, free ultimate dining, payed grats and one more free thing that I can't recall for booking in their Haven suites.

I love RCI and specifically Oasis class but there are limits to the financial abuse I'll take.

  5. #1 - that's just too long. I'd need to take a quickie between now and then.

#2 - that's my birthday! Where should I meet you for boarding?

    ;-)

I have 3 scheduled between now and then.

    1. Alaska cruise tour with RCI in June.

    2. Oasis E. Caribbean in a sky loft suite in October.

    3. Another in Dec this year on NCL. Can't remember ship.

I'm sure there will be one or two more in 2016 before this one.

I will be at the bar with a big group, I'll buy you a drink!

  6. If you have never been on another Princess ship you will like it. If you have been on any of the older Princess ships you will think this ship is a step down from the older ships.

Dang, I hope you're wrong on this. I'm on Regal next month and have cruised once with Princess on Crown and was not impressed. Was hoping a newer ship would be nicer.
