  1. Although you say you want to do a tour on your own, I would recommend the 'free' walking tour (Google it).

When I took it the route we took was excellent, and was not one I would have taken with a guide book.

The tours are 'free' in the sense of if you like the tour give the guide a tip at the end, if you don't like it, there are plenty of opportunities to make a quiet exit early on.

I have been looking into this and wondered how one got to town to meet the tour guide?

  2. Many people say that Chania is Greece's most beautiful city.

The 'old town' is made up of a large Venetian harbour & many little alleyways behind, lovely to walk around. The harbour front is made up mostly with cafes, bars & tavernas, an excellent & extremely photogenic spot to while away an hour or 2 (although usually, better food is found just behind the harbour).

The backstreets are filled with individual small shops.

There are a couple of super museums, on Halidon St, (which is the main pedestrianized street leading to the harbour & has a good art gallery) & the Naval museum at the West end of the harbour.

There is a covered market where most cruise buses stop & 4 days a week are street markets selling incredible, fresh, local produce.

The ancient Lighthouse can be walked to from the Eastern side of the harbour.

Further past this is Koum Kapi, where the young locals gather to drink coffee & chat.

Wow, thank you for the information. This is exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate it!

  3. Stayed at the Embassy Suites twice. Both times our rooms were not ready by the four pm check in time. It is convenient, etc. and all was good except it was not ready by check in time. I doubt we will stay there again.

  4. Sleeping was a bit tricky, esp since one of our girls is a very light sleeper. We took advice from a poster here and took magnets with us. We requested and extra sheet and used the magnets to attach it to the ceiling and walls to darken the room when they were sleeping and allowed us to go to the bathroom or watch tv (with headphones) without waking them. We were given two pack and plays, we requested them before the trip but somehow that request didn't make it to our room steward. Thankfully we were still able to get them in our room with little fuss. We also brought our noise machine to help make the environment sound like "normal".

Were you able to hook headphones into the tv?

  5. We have a Central Park stateroom so although a balcony, no ocean view. My mom is 84 and having more difficulty getting around. I was going to suggest the Solarium to her because she can get there fairly easily by elevator. I can't remember if there are any deck chairs on five or not? Any other suggestions that would not require a lot of walking?

  6. Thanks for your replies. I am not as worried about the children. I was a teacher and had to vacation often with them and it never really bothered me. From what I have read, it seems we will see baby penguins at that time. Curious why Falklands? Why is it best to go there? Topography, Penguins, what is it you loved?

  7. I need some help. I have booked a cruise on Celebrity Infinity's 14 day "Chili and Argentina Cruise" for January of 2018. However, I can certainly change it and choose another cruise or cruise line. I think because I know so little about South America, I am at a loss. I am not sure if this is a good itinerary for a first time in South America, or if it is a good time to go, or really much of anything. Cruising guides on South America are non existent. I did purchase an overall book on South America, but it's a Whole Continent, so not specifically helpful. Our itinerary includes Valparaiso, Puerto Montt, Chilean Fjords, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia, Cape Horn, Puerto Madryn, Punta Del Este, Montevideo, and end in Buenos Aires.

We are able to go most any time, so not locked into the January date. I have read many of the boards and still just can't put my finger on when best to go or where best to go. I know I am sounding wishy washy, but would love any feedback. I also like it when cruise lines have a historian or environmentalist that gives talks about the area being visited. Has anyone sailed Celebrity and had this type of information? Not sure who does it best. I am an open book, please help me fill in my pages!

  8. I have enjoyed your review and stunning photographs. Definitely a cruise for the bucket list!

Do you know if Alejandro was the CD? We are on the Infinity in April and I am really hoping for Alejandro. Thanks.

I am quite certain he is the CD now. He was on the Equinox in early December but was leaving to go on Infinity. He is my favorite CD!
