That is an oddity!  A bit of whimsy on the part of someone.  Date?  From the funnel colors, it was sometime after QE2's introduction into service when the funnel was painted in the traditional Cunard colors.  (Was the funnel modified at that time as well?)

the funnel was modified after the falkland war when she was converted to diesel engines.  the person I bought this from emailed me when I asked when this was from and was told late 1990's early 2000

  2. I thought might get a kick out of the craziest Cunard postcard I have ever seen, it's for the QE2, but it's the oddest postcard I have ever seen for Cunard. See what you think of this *Cartoon Postcard* and yes it was from aboard the ship as it has the QE2 stamp on the back saying posted onboard. Would love to hear back on this oddity, sadly I don't know what year this postcard is from as I can't find it anywhere.

Please do not do this! Leave the things on the beach as you find them. Imagine how much sand that it takes when 100 people all take "just a little bit" of sand, multiplied times all the cruises? That's super destructive to the areas that you are visiting even though you think that it's not. Leave things alone! Just take a photo. Or buy a magnet.

Don't forget also you don't know what bacteria is in that beach sand,  or small ocean plankton or such. It could be bringing over something that doesn't end well or some unknown mess.

  4. I remember a couple of cruises to Bermuda years ago, a few tried to bring sand aboard the ship and as we were all going through the xray machine, we also had to empty pockets and such onto trays and a few had their ziploc bags of sand confiscated at the ship and the bags tossed into the garbage bin an they were told if they wanted to bring sand, they had to buy the lil bottles an such from souvenir shops as most likely that sand had been cleaned, as just taking sand from the beach, who knows what was in it, plant life, bacteria from the waters and other things. Personally if I collected sand, I'd only buy the souvenir ones from repudable shops so I knew was safe to bring onto the ship. I think it was NCL, they confiscated a lot of sand and shells, unless they were from souvenir shops and tagged or stickered.

We sailed on her when she was Norway.  Beautiful ship!

I have items too from her as the Norway, a nice spoon, postcards, playing cards, keychains, a model as sold on board the gift shop, a nice souvenir towel with a picture of her on it, and a nice framed art print sold on board during the norwegian caribbean line era and a souvenir wine glass. I'll include the photos of my nice souvenirs from her.  (Seems I don't have photos of all the items I mentioned, but here's some I took.

  6. I can't think of any really old ships left, most were scrapped because of SOLAS. not many old ships left now still cruising I don't think. One person mentioned Marella, but most of their ships were built in the mid 1990's such as:

Marella Discovery (Splendour Of The Seas) 1996

Marella Discovery 2 (Legend Of The Seas) 1995

    Marella Explorer (Celebrity Galaxy) 1996

Marella Explorer 2 (Celebrity Century) 1995

    Marella Voyage (Celebrity Mercury) 1997

10 of their older ships are gone an scrapped, the above is their fleet now

Its interesting to read about this Greek Line....during the 1960's there was THE GREEK LINE that sailed out of NYC - it was notorious for bad food & dirty conditions onboard - but they were fun cruises.  We always sailed on the Italian Lines & Cunard & French Lines which had better conditions & food all round.

Interesting enough - I was told many years ago  -somewhere along  the way the old GREEK LINE morphed into CELEBRITY CRUISES w Greek Officers  - in the early to mid 1990's we did a cruise to Bermuda on the ZENITH - there was a storm - the Home lInes ships & a NCL ship stayed in NYC harbor for a day to avoid the hurricane - the ZENITH sailed directly into the storm & it was hell for 24 hours - even the ships hull was dented from the waves...we were a day late into Bermuda - never again would I  or will I sail on Celebrity.  I believe the captain was even brought on charges for endangering the welfare of the passengers & crew.

I've been on 2 Celebrity cruises, my mom and dad did 6 cruises with Celebrity. The Summit, Solstice, Equinox, Infinity and Constellation. I had a friend who was a travel agent and I have a small nice sized collection of items for the Greek Line: Ashtray, menus, brochure, rates price list, postcards, 2 souvenir spoons, a daily program, a greek line pen, a fold out brochure that opens up into 1 big square and 2 decks of playing cards.

What a nice artifact to own!  She arrived in Canada just as the Great Depression was about to begin.  Do you have any knowledge of how that impacted her as she began to settle in her new home?

Not really as she wasn't good with english, but from what I found out, she would buy a house, fix it up and resell when she wanted to move. My mom told me they moved a lot, and her parents (my mom's parents) never owned a car, always the bus or us to get them around.

I was aware of some of the shoddy early history of some of the Greek and Italian lines.  Learning what I did, when I began to have the resources to cruise, I did not consider these companies in choosing the cruise line to begin my cruising adventures.

Not related to this company but thought might find this interesting. It's the ship immigration card and a postcard for the ship one of my grandmother's came over on in 1929. The *Baltic America Line* SS Lituania

Never heard of them.  The Line must have operated solely in European waters.

Yes and also ended being destroyed to a lot of safety and legal law suit issues finally ending the line.

The Typaldos Lines name endures in legal contract law stemming from the lawsuit Anglo Continental Holidays Ltd v Typaldos Lines (London) Ltd.

In that case a trip was advertised for the Atlantica (with two swimming pools and spacious accommodation) but the line substituted the much smaller Angelika. Typaldos Lines also shortened a two-day call at Haifa, Israel to just eight hours. The line referred to a clause in the passenger contract that indicated, "..steamers, sailing, rates and itineraries are subject to change without prior notice." The court ruled that the substitution was a radical departure from the performance of the contract and granted monetary damages to the plaintiffs. Lord Denning said: "In my opinion a steamship company cannot rely on a clause of this kind so as to alter the substance of the transaction. The case is still cited in legal opinions regarding injury to commercial reputation.

In 1968 the Typaldos Lines owners were arrested and the company disbanded after the Greek government investigation of the SS Heraklion incident found them guilty of manslaughter and negligence and document falsification. The company's ships were taken over and sold except for two, including SS Athinai, who attracted no buyers and were subsequently laid up.

Ship Disaster Heraklion: Capsized and sank 8 December 1966: The death of over 200 people. Her demise was one of the greatest maritime disasters in Greek history.

Twelve of the company's fifteen ships had failed inspection. Haralambos Typaldos (company owner) and Panayiotis Kokkinos (general manager) were sentenced to jail.

*Gives you interesting history of this messed up line, I have these items from.

  11. Anyone remember this Greek line? I had a friend who was a travel agent in the 1960's and now I have the items. A couple are unique as they are signed by the Owner of the line. One is a Christmas card and the other is a New Years Card which is unique as has a picture of one of the ships on a copper sheet in the card. There is also a signed business card by the Line's owner. I also have a nice luggage tag and a nice lil pewter keychain in the shape of a ship's wheel.

Somewhere in my archives, I have a 45 rpm record made on the  Queen Elizabeth when a recording was made of the conversation on the Bridge at the end of a voyage.  At the very end, one can hear the Captain saying "Finished with the engines".  I am almost sure that I bought it on the Queen Elizabeth when she was a "tourist attraction" in Fort Lauderdale for awhile.  Was the end of that voyage her last commercial voyage?  Don't remember, but, it's possible.

Have you ever seen those toys before anywhere? I found one of these at a thrift store, the other 2, I got from a friend.

  13. For those that like Princess Cruises, I got a couple of nice postcards and an Inaugural Gift for the 1995 Sun Princess. Postcards for the Princess Italia (Postmarked 1971 on the back), Fair Princess (1988 - 1997), Pacific Princess (Postmarked 1975 on the back). And a nice cookbook for Crystal Cruises, I found at a local thrift store.

I do remember seeing that type of glasses, but, I don't recall where.  Never owned any myself.

What an interesting find of a record album!  RCA Camden records:  a lower cost brand of records made by RCA.  I have some of those 33.3 rpm records and wish my record player still worked.  One of my favorite Christmas albums is a RCA Camden recording.

I don't know if noticed, but not sure why but the lifeboat hanging off the side of the ship says *RMS Mauretania* and has a really nice illustration of the pool deck and the deck area for dancing it seems with a place for the band.

I have a nice collection of Lp Record Albums from ships. See list and year provided if known.

    1. 1969 - Maiden QE2 Album

    2. 1960 - Swedish American Musical Postcard 45 rpm

    3. 1980 - Aleksandr Pushkin

Acording to The Ship's List for Cunard, M/V England was purchased from DFDS in 1982 and left for Jeddah as an accommodation ship named America XIII.  Didn't see any other information about the ship and I have no memory of that ship.  Doubt that it ever served any ports in North America.

She was on the run Capetown - Falkland Islands for Cunard, that's what I was able to find about her route she ran

  16. Thought might find this postcard interesting as on the back, there is 2 company line logos. The *Linea C* for Costa and the one above it is *SGTM* Soc.Gen.Transports Maritimes. The postcard was made for when they chartered the cruise ship to Costa, between 1962 - 1965. They sold her to Costa in 1965 and she would become the Enrico C, then the Enrico Costa. They sold her in 1994 to Star Lauro where she became the *Symphony*. They chartered her to *Golden Sun Cruises in 2000 - 2001. Finally scrapped in 2001. Second photo is a zoom of the 2 logos together on the back of the postcard.
