So, back to my trip report: after the cruise we had three lovely (if you can ignore hot and humid...) days in Sydney, staying at the Four Seasons and exploring The Rocks, the Opera House, CBD, and the Taronga Zoo.  Flight back on Qantas SYD–LAX was incredibly smooth, although the food didn't match the level of their flight over JFK–AKL (redeemed for me by a very good Aussie single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon), and our four checked bags all made it.

Final flight on American LAX–JFK was also very nice – their A321T business cubicles are more spacious than most, and the food and service were good.  But [and I hope @jpalbny is reading this] we got a scare about our checked luggage.  When we landed Apple 'Find My' reported that 3 of our bags were 'with us' on the plane, but the 4th was in Winslow, Arizona!  Humming the Eagles' song to relieve the anxiety, we proceeded to baggage claim to get our 3 bags and file a report on the stray.  Of course you have to wait until ALL the bags come off the belt before they'll talk to you, and ... what do you know, all four bags appeared [the 'missing' one came last, just to prolong the suspense].  Checking 'Find My' again, it admitted that the bag was now 'with us.'  But I was thinking of @jpalbny the whole time, hearing the sound of schadenfreude laughter in my ears...

I absolutely cannot reconcile "the Captain looked at me like a cow looking at a passing train".  The current captain on the Whisper is the epitome of a gentleman and he is charming.   I am glad you have noted that the crew will suffer much more than passengers.   There is so much "me" amongst disappointed passengers at the moment.   Stuff happens and SSC are having to make the best of a bad job.

Back home now.  Had a great trip. We had dinner with the Captain very early in the cruise.  He was cordial and certainly competent.  My comment about the cow, meant that he knew, I knew, he knew they were going to cancel upcoming coming voyages but obviously could not tell me.  Hence, the statement.  I apologize if  that blew anyone's "skirt up".

  3. We’re on the Whisper now.  I asked the Captain last week if they were going to make the dry dock. He looked at me like a cow looking at a passing train. I can sympathize with those that have been cancelled and believe that the decision could have been made much earlier. But, talking to the crew; most will disembark in Singapore with no further wages when they were going to be on until Athens. Those that remain on board will be on reduced wages as there are no passengers on board. They will suffer to a much larger degree than Silversea passengers.

Not posting enough, I'd say. Get back on the case, man, we need some vicarious antipodean sunshine.

Nurse Ratched needs to find a forum catering to the recreationally offended.

DW’s  comment reminded me of a scene from Crocodile Dundee!  The Nurse’s comment just illustrates that we live in a world of the perpetually aggrieved 😀

I am afraid Fletcher seems to have  had one of those experiences we all get occasionally, when things of all sorts seem to conspire against you - a mixture of annoyances with fellow passengers, ship performance and so on, when one  can get to a feeling that it isn't going to get any better until you are  away from it all.

I may be completely misinterpreting it, but that is how it reads to me.

The early luggage deal may have been an over zealous butler who wanted to get a head start on change over day.  I would  like to know if this happened to other passengers.

Happy Birthday Mick!!  Is age 80 being old?  Or, just "Middle Aged" like us?

From the French AFP newswire this morning, they had this headline: Greatest rock'n'roll showman Mick Jagger turns 80" with this sub-headline:  "Mick Jagger once sang 'what a drag it is getting old' but the most senior swinger in town shows little sign of slowing down as he turns 80 on Wednesday.

Here are some of their reporting highlights:The Rolling Stones frontman is still strutting and gyrating in front of packed-out arenas, most recently touring Europe to mark the band's 60th anniversary.   The icon of 60s counterculture underwent a heart valve replacement in 2019, but his regime of running, kick-boxing, cycling and yoga has maintained his svelte figure and longevity as an energetic showman.

Any here at the Cooler have experienced Mick and the Stones doing an in-person, live concert?  We have done three concerts with the Rolling Stones.  Below are some of my picture files illustrating that they put on "one hell of a show".  Even at his advanced age then, he moved all around a big, big stage set-up in this football stadium that could seat up to 100,000.  Great tunes and excellent showmanship. Right?

From the summer of 2015 in Columbus at the giant football Ohio Stadium, Mick and the Rolling Stones put on a spectacular show for the massive crowd.  All of the great hits, including "Satisfaction", etc.:

  7. We also stayed at the Hilton Molino Stucky  years ago.  Agree that the location is much quieter. This was the view from our room.  Unfortunately,  that's not the case now!!! 30thanniversarycruise002.thumb.JPG.95d5bbb4ef4c149e8fa3d3f476c5914f.JPG

A note of positivity here.  We were supposed to depart yesterday 12/16 with a pre-cruise tour of Machu Picchu before boarding the Moon on 12/21 in Lima.  Due to the political unrest, the  pre-cruise tour was canceled because of concern for the safety of the group.  We were given the option of staying at the Westin Lima for 5 nights with will room and meals included.  Silversea said they would provide tours in and around Lima if possible.  Since the tour was the main draw for us as we had been to most of the cruise ports before,  we asked for a refund on 12/14.  The full refund for the tour and voyage hit the Amex Card last night.  Yes,  we were surprised if not shocked!!

I would like to add that we were offered a pre cruise refund with the 5 nights in Lima. But opted for the full refund.
