Hi Mexico 8, Thanks for your reply, My concern about changing flights is because I have always flown direct before. At both JFK New York and at Manchester Uk I have been collected from the aircraft by wheelchair and not got my scooter back until the luggage collection area, that is why I was concerned that I might not get my scooter back in Atlanta and it might be transferred straight to the next flight as it would be at Manchester. Hopefully I will get it back at the jetway then there will be no problem. All airports seem to have different rules and regulations.

Hi Flacaigs 5 I have flown many times with my scooter, mine is a pride go go travel elite, which does not fold but will break down into 4 parts for putting in a car. I have always ridden my scooter right to the gate and they have just pushed it up into the aircraft. (just make sure they knock it out of drive so not to damage it when they push it) I have flown on Europe's budget airlines and transatlantic to New york, Las Vegas and San Francisco all without problems. There are three advantages of taking your scooter all the way to the gate. 1. you can get a round the airport. 2. less chance of it getting damaged, 3. and most important you know it's on the same aircraft you are!!!
I am flying from Manchester UK to Miami next spring and will have to change aircraft in Atlanta, I am a bit worried that my scooter will not be transferred onto the correct aircraft as they may insist I use one of their wheelchairs while we are in the airport. If anyone can put my mind at rest I would be very grateful.

I always put mine in my hand luggage along with my medication. I would never take the risk of something so vital getting lost

Hi
I also us a small mobility scooter. Two years ago I visited Bermuda, I had no problem getting round at all. Being from the UK and have managed places such as Tallinn, Venice and Athens, Bermuda was simple. On the first day we just got the ferry to Hamilton with no problem. On the second day we did a 5 hour tour of the island, which included a stop in St. Georges with a company called Bermuda Island Tours & more. (www.bermudaislandtours.com) The tour was excellent, Juanita (the owner) was brilliant and just put my scooter on the mini bus. The tour cost about £50.00 each and was excellent value for money.

Will yours scooters come to pieces, I had to do this once with mine in a very small cabin. it is a bit of a nuisance but better than not going on your cruise, if you take one or both apart you may be able to fit some bits under the bed and pile other bits on top on each other.

I always use a folding cane, great for cruises, planes, coaches, theatres restaurants.

I always take my daily probiotic tablet It seems to help with the prevention of any upsets, plus lots of hand washing.

Have you been to the Acropolis museum. If you got a taxi there to avoid all the bumps, once there it is wheel chair friendly and has a lovely smooth surface.

Hi Chippet,
I use a scooter although I can walk very short distances I think I can give you some useful info as I have been to all these ports.
Oporto The new part has a lot of steep hills and is very difficult. When I went I just got the ships shuttle into town which was a mistake. I should have just got a taxi down to the riverside where it it flat and much more scenic.
Malaga. You should be find here to just wander around, nice smooth surfaces and quite flat in the centre of town.
We did not get to do everything we planed to do here as that morning my scooter broke and I had to hire a manual wheel chair and it was so very hot our plans changed somewhat.
Cadiz This should be wonderful for you It's just a short stroll from the ship into the town. Very flat and nice smooth surfaces. It is a lovely town I have been twice and very much enjoyed it.
Cartagena This will also be great for you. Again just a short stroll from the ship. Flat and lovely smooth surfaces. There is a Roman amphitheatre there which is wheel chair accessible.
Gibralta You may be able to get an adapted taxi to take you up the rock. If not main street in nice and flat.
Lisbon Like Oporto some of it is very hilly but if you stick to the area arround Praco de comercio you should have no problems and there is plenty to see arround there. The sail in to Lisbon should not be missed it is one one the best ones I have enjoyed.
Hope this of some help. Have a wonderful holiday and if you have any questions I would be pleased to help if I can.

Hi Jenna,
So sorry about your mum. I am also from the north west of the uk. You are so right you have got to take every chance to can to travel, no one knows what is round the corner. I am disabled and my husband does not like to travel so 7 years ago I left him at home and went (complete with mobility scooter) on my first cruise. I had the best time and now every year I go on a cruise with a friend. So go for it, your mum would be so pleased.

My friend and I had a two day private tour with Alla tours four years ago. It was amazing. I use a small mobility scooter so the trip was custom made. I can not praise Alla tours highly enough, we saw so much more than anyone who did the ships tours and it was wonderful to have our own guide, driver and very comfortable mercedes for the two days. The cost was not much more than if we had done 2 full day ships tours, thanks to a good exchange rate. They made my dream of seeing St Petersburg come true.

I uses a Pride go go travel scooter and four years ago I spent two wonderful days is St Petersburg. Before I even booked the cruise I emailed Alla tours and Alla replied back straight away to say no problem they would customize a tour for me. My friend and I had a car. driver and guide for the two days and saw much more than anyone who did the ships trips, and it was not much more expensive. I can not praise them enough, they made my dream of visiting St Petersburg come true. I used my scooter every where except Catherine palace where I had to use one of their wheelchairs. If you have any questions I will be pleased to answer them.

I can help with Cartagena. Ships dock just a very short walk from the centre of the town. It is a lovely town to have a wonder round, don't miss the roman amphitheatre which is wheelchair/ pushchair friendly.

Have received the £4.500.00 back from Princess today. Still waiting for an answer to my email to them to say they should compensate all affected with some OBC. Anyone who was affected if they could all email Princess asking for compensation it may help
-
I received an email on Saturday from Princess to say I had been affected and the checked my account which showed nothing. Today I see that over £4,500.00 has come out of my account. I know I will receive the money back from Princess but think the least they could do is to give everyone affected some on board sends as compensation.

Hi,
I also use a small mobility scooter. I docked at Kings Wharf last May. On day one we took the ferry to Hamilton which is wheelchair accessible. On day two we too a tour with Bermuda Tours and more which cost $50.00 each for a 5hour tour of the island. info@bermudaislandtours.com The tour was excellent and Juanita just loaded my scooter onto her mini bus.

Hi Purple traveller,
Thanks you very much for your reply. It was just the information I have been looking for. I don't see any reason that I can not look forward to a trip to Taormina. I didn't like the look of Messina too much so was really hoping it would be possible. I know there are some cobbles there but I managed Tallinn and the cobbles there will take some beating.
-
Hi,
Has anyone taken the Princess "Taormina on your own excursion"? I would love to do this excursion but I use a small mobility scooter. Does the trip start off from the parking garage on Corso Umberto and then you get the lift to Taormina? If this is the case I think I would be able to do this excursion. Any information or advice would be very gratefully received.
-
Thank you all for your help. I know it won't be easy, but I have not given up on it yet. I have managed Venice, St Petersburg, Tallinn, ( I will never forget those cobbles!) Rome and New York to name but a few, most places are possible if you do your research. I think I will wait until I am on board and then go and have a chat with the excursions team. I am hoping to be able to go as I don't like the look of Messina it's self.
-
I was thinking of the Taormina on your own trip via princess, I believe they drop you off in a car park where you then get a lift to Taormina, Has anyone done this trip using a mobility scooter or wheel chair?
-
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has been to Taormina in Sicily on a mobility scooter.
Any information would be gratefully received.
-
Should have added we really enjoyed having lots of different nationalities on board and of all ages so you would not feel you were on a "saga" cruise. Met some very interesting people.

Hi Again,
We did a 2 week baltic cruise on the Eclipes, one of favorite ships, very accessible lovely, roomy state rooms (we just had a standard balcony room as I don't need the bathroom facilities that your husband would need) Good food and entertainment. I would travel with them again anytime.

Your very welcome, My husband doesn't like holidays and I got so fed up of not going anywhere. Now I go away with a friend I have known since we were 11. Our children are grown up now so we now do the sort of holidays we should have done when we were younger. We have the best time ever and it is amazing what you can still do, we behave like teenagers again! I got so much help from cruise critic when I first started cruising so it's good to give something back. If you do your research it is amazing what you can do. Don't rule out Venice it is possible.
