  1. Hi

I have mobility problems and have done 3 med cruises (another coming up in July) and 1 Baltic cruise, I take a small mobility scooter with me as I can not walk far at all. If you do not own one I would think about renting one, but would advise a bit of practice in using one before you travel. I have managed very well every where I have been, the key is to do lots of research before you travel. I found most Spanish ports very easy to get around. If you let me know which ports you will be visiting I may be able to give you some tips.

  2. Hi London Towner,

I totally agree with you. My scooter is the same as yours. I did two cruises with P and O before they changed the rules. I never left my scooter in the corridors so it was never in anyones way. That is why P and O lost my custom, I will not be bribed into having to pay for a mini suite and do not want to use a wheel chair as my independence is vital to me. Some of the ideas on having scooters for people to just use ashore are excellent and would be great for some people, but unfortunately I now need to use mine on the ship as my condition worsens, but I love my cruises and will continue to do so as long as I can

  3. Superior balcony cabins on RCCL are NOT mini suites, they are very slightly larger than the deluxe balcony cabins which are the standard balcony cabins, the price of both are almost identical as the superior tend to be either forward or aft. They are almost half the price of a mini suite on either P and O and RCCL.

  4. Hi Carol,

On RCCL and Celebrity you just have to tell them when you book that you will be bring a mobility scooter, they then send you a form to fill in about size weight etc. We have a superior balcony cabin as they are a bit larger and move the coffee onto the balcony table and there is loads of room for the scooter with our it getting in the way.

  5. Hi,

I am also booked on the explorer (26th July). I am hoping we have just heard from people who love to complain. Here is what I could have written after last years Indy cruise 1st one is the real one!!!!

Check in was very swift. Cabin was very clean and much bigger than on many other ships. Food overall was very good, sometime service was a bit slow but it didn't bother us as we were enjoying chatting to our table companions. Entertainment was good overall. Loved the ice shows and the street parties.

I use a mobility scooter and had trouble with it not charging. The ships engineers found it was a problem with the lead and gave me a new one, they lent me a wheelchair while the found the problem. Even though it was the school summer holidays and there where over 1000 children onboard they were well behaved when you did see them (mostly in kids club) It was lovely to see the kids all dressed up on formal night. I need to use the lifts but never had to wait for one except after muster and after the shows but this was only to be expected. Weather was hot and sunny every day. Ports of call were excellent.

We were late boarding and could not even get a drink as everything had shut for muster drill. When we got to our cabin only one case was there we had to wait another 30mins for the other, we found the cabin a bit dated and didn't like the colours. My mobility scooter would not charge in the cabin and I was forced to use a wheelchair for a day. I have never seen so many children on a cruise, they even appeared on formal night. I must complain about the food, they no longer had my favorite yoghurt and the grapes had pips in them. We had long waits between courses in the MDR. When we had room service breakfast, it always arrive 15mins early and woke us up 5 mins before we had set an alarm call. We could not always get a sun lounger. The street parties were very noisey and it was very cold watching the ice show. The weather was too hot in the ports of call. Had long waits for the lifts. I could go on the list is endless.

    See what I mean

  6. Hi,

I also use a small mobility scooter, after we enjoyed two cruises with P and O, they brought in the new rules, I too will not book a disabled room as there are other people who can not cruise without those cabins and also I can't book early enough to secure one. I notice on looking at availability of mini suits, they sell out very quickly. (a good way of p & O selling their mini suites) I refuse to pay all that extra money so since then they have lost my custom. I have done the Baltic cruise on Celebrity Eclipse (my favorite ship so far) and last year we went with Royal Caribbean Independence of the seas. Again this was a great ship (the ships engineers even fixed my scooter when I had a problem) I have another cruise booked with RCCL this summer.

  7. Hi

As someone else said there are many sailings on Celebrity Eclipse sailing from Southampton. I did this cruise in June 2013, it was amazing. If you do a baltic cruise I recommend you use a Russian tour company for your trips in St Petersburg. We used Alla tours they were wonderful, even though I have mobility problems and use a mobility scooter we saw much, much more than anyone we spoke to who had done ships tours.

  8. Many thanks for your replies. The reason we want to go from New York is because we have never been and want to spend a few days there. We enjoy having a few sea days so that doesn't bother us, as for a lot of children being on board that doesn't bother us as last year we had to take our cruise in the middle for the uk school holidays and it was fine.

  9. Hi,

We were thinking of flying from the UK to New York, having 3 days there and then cruising from Cape Liberty on the Anthem calling at Kings Wharf, St Maarten, San Juan and Labadee. We were thinking of June 2016, but were a bit worried about what the weather is like at this time of the year. I note most of the ships have moved over to Europe at that time of the year, makes me wonder if it's not the best time of the year to go. As said we are from the UK so this would be a once in a life time trip (we usually cruise from Southampton uk)

  10. Hi there'

I have also got the select package for my cruise on the Explorer in July. I also noticed that since the recent price rises most of the wines are now above the $8.00 limit (which makes the package useless for my friend and I as we are not beer drinkers) I saw on one of the posts on c.c. it showed a copy of the drinks packages and the select now included wine up to $9.00 which would be fine, I tried to include a copy but couldn't get it to download. Also could any tell me if you can just pay the difference if you get a more expensive wine or do you have to pay the full price, I don't want to upgrade to the next package as we are not big drinkers but do enjoy a glass or two at dinner and a glass or two of prosseco. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one confused.

  11. Hi

Last year just 10 days before I was about to go on a cruise with a friend my son and his wife had a still born daughter, so of course I could not go. I rang RC and they let me cancel and re book. They were very helpful but had to charge me £75.00 as it was after final payment, but I got nearly £600.00 paid back onto my credit card as prices had come down since I booked. I could have claimed the £75.00 back on my insurance but it wasn't worth the trouble. I must also mention Eavesways coaches who very wonderful and didn't charge at all for the change

  12. Hi there

Both Cadiz and Caragena are wonderful to access on your scooter, the centre of both are very close to the docks, they are flat and the surface is a pleasure to drive on. Gibraltar is fine if you stick to main street, or you can get a taxi to the apes den. Lisbon is fine as long as you stay clear of the old very hilly district. Barcelona is fine also. Valletta is posible, but take care on the steep hills, if you stick to the city gate area you will be fine, Corfu town is also possible if you don't mine a few bumpy bits. Hope this helps

  13. Hi,

Have just booked on the explorer for next July and was surprised to be told that my time dining was already booked up, but we could be wait listed. I am very much hoping that with more than 6 months to go there is a good chance of getting it, has any one booked so far in advance and got or not got their wait list choice. Thanks

  14. hi there,

i will be docking in Villefranche next july and would like to visit nice. My problem is i use a mobility scooter and we have to tender so i will have to leave it on broad, i know you can make the trip by bus or train, but both theses options would involve too much walking for me to manage. I was wondering if anyone knows how easy it is to get a taxi there and back or if anyone has any better ideas i would love to hear from you

  15. Eavesways every time.

    Eavesways

luxury coaches, very helpful and friendly drivers, very helpful office staff, convenient pick up spots, can not fault them at all.

    Intercruises

Old coach, bad tempered driver, had to wait for coach in the rain with no where to shelter, coach broke down twice on the way back.

    Have only used Intercruises once!!!!!!

  16. Hi there,

I will be on the independence of the seas docking in le syne-sur-mer near Toulon on a Sunday this July. I believe there is not much to do in Toulon on a Sunday and was thinking of getting a taxi to Sanary-sur-mer. Does anyone know how easy it is to get a taxi there and more importantly back again, I believe there is a bus that will get you there but as I use a small mobility scooter that will fit in any small car boot so a taxi is an easier option.

  17. Hi Londongal,

I just wanted to thank you for the very detailed review inn the Italian Med cruise.

I was very interested in it as I would have been on the same cruise but due to a very tragic family bereavement I had to cancel. I have managed to book the same cruise leaving Southampton on the 12th July. I was glad to hear the food in the MDR was good, I don't use the buffet much as I have mobility problems and much prefer to be waited on. The entertainment sounded good too, you can't please all the people all the time, I hope Mike Doyle is on our cruise too as we saw him last year on the celebrity eclipse and he was excellent. I am now looking forward to my cruise in just over a weeks time, I have not cruised with royal caribbean before, but I,m sure my friend and I will have a great time, as we always do on ours girl's holiday [we leave the men at home] Thanks again for all the information.
