Prince Edward Island Driving Itinerary?

Recommended Posts

My husband and I will be visiting Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island during our NCL Spirit Cruise (October 19th) We have a rental car reserved and will be there from 11am until 7pm. Does anyone have a great day trip itinerary they would like to share? We would REALLY appreciate any help! Any other tips about our day would be great (things not to miss, things to avoid, etc. etc). I can't wait to read all the great suggestions!

We were just in PEI a week ago on the Eurodam reposition cruise and we decided the best way to see everything we wanted to see was to rent a car also. We left from Charlottetown and headed up to North Rustico, a beautiful little fishing village. We headed across to Cavendish to see the Green Gables house then down to New Glasgow. We then headed up along the oceanside drive to the Confederation Bridge and worked our way back towards Charlottetown, ending with enough time left to wander through town back to the ship. It was the best, cheapest way to see it all. We found PEI very easy to navigate!! Have a great time!

I try to spend at least a month on PEI every summer. I would have to agree that renting a car is the best strategy. I would also suggest visiting North Rustico, New Glasgow, and Green Gables. Charlottetown is a very safe and walkable city so if you leave an hour or so at the end of the day you could go for a nice walk and see the city sights. PEI is a spectacular spot and my favorite island. If you like lobster stopping for a lobster lunch is a real treat.

I would drive across the Confederation Bridge, just to say you did. It does cost $40 or so to leave PEI, but it's free to come back. There isn't anything to see on the New Brunswick side unless you head inland or up the coast a bit, but I wouldn't take away time from touring PEI to do that.

We were on PEI earlier this month and also rented a car. We drove north, planning to find every lighthouse we could to photograph. North Rustico is really cute. We ate lunch there. At this time of year, not much is still open. When we got to Green Gables, there was a long line of people waiting to get in, so we decided to try more lighthouses. We only made it around the "Green Gables Shore" driving route (click here to read about it.

I would suggest checking out PEI's fantastic tourism site and requesting a hard copy of the brochure. Here's a link to the Home page of the tourism site.
