generasianx Posted September 20, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2017 Our RC cruise will be docking at Georgetown/Penang. Just wondering if the town is walkable from the terminal? Planning on visiting a bunch of museums in the town. If not walkable, are there taxis waiting by the terminal or would we need to arrange for rides beforehand? thank you! BruceMuzz Posted September 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 20, 2017 Yes, much of Georgetown is walkable. Yes, like just about every other city in Asia, there are plenty of taxis.

Thanks. So specifically, the town is walkable from the port terminal?
BruceMuzz Posted September 20, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 20, 2017 The terminal is in the center of the old town. Many shops, restaurants, and sights are very close. If you want to see the newer parts of Georgetown, you will have to walk a bit or take a taxi.
hallasm Posted September 21, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 21, 2017 I have made two videos from my visit earlier this year where we strolled through the city - do not miss the street art. Here is a link to more information for George Town as well as my review from the day in Penang. xn0RaRTlj_I FRdQsSWDf9o
kjets Posted September 21, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 21, 2017 We enjoyed our slow walk around Georgetown in the afternoon after going on a private excursion in the morning. Just outside the port lots of men yelling at us to take their taxi or tuk tuk which can be overwhelming. Keep in mind that their footpaths are not as well maintained as some countries and you may need to walk along busy roads, which can get scary. Also the humidity was extremely high when we went, so take clothes that consider the season. My umbrella came in very handy just to keep the sun off us. Really really loved Georgetown, and the people were very friendly and helpful. Sent from my SM-N920I using Tapatalk
ROCruiser Posted September 21, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 21, 2017 Yes, very walkable. The umbrella idea is a great suggestion. Plenty of taxi drivers right at the port gate. I would get a taxi away from these, if really necessary. Be careful when crossing the streets, especially right near the port. I suggest to start your day early before the heat gets to you. hallasm Posted September 22, 2017 #8 Share Posted September 22, 2017 I suggest to start your day early before the heat gets to you. We did the walking late after noon - that was fine
iancal Posted September 24, 2017 #9 Share Posted September 24, 2017 We spent two days/three nights in Penang. Going back this winter. It was one of our favourite places in Malaysia. We were there in Feb. Weather was perfect. Not too humid. We walked a great deal. Back to our hotel in the late afternoon for a swim and a cold beer. Then out again at night. Wonderful food, friendly people. The post was so close to our hotel (Royal Bintang) that we just rolled our luggage a few blocks.
