55 Minutes in Zurich?

ZRH is very efficient. This will be tight, but doable. You will need to clear immigration in ZRH in both directions (as it serves as both your entrance AND exit from Schengen), and re-clear security on the way to Rome (and probably a special US security clearance check for your return). But ZRH is built for short connections, and although I would personally want more, you should be okay if on time. That being said, do try to get seats as far front as possible, as every minute at ZRH will count.

assuming flights are on time, will we be ok?
A problem only really arises if the flight are not on time. The airline would not book you on this connection if it were not the case that you would at least be very likely to make the connection. If all is running to schedule, you would be unlucky not to make it, even though it may be tight.

If you had asked before booking, we could have worked through alternative options so you could have knowledgeably picked one that matches your needs and risk appetite. But now that you have already booked, it may now make no difference whether the answer to your question is yes or no - you may just have to see whether it works on the day or whether you get unlucky.

thanks everyone.

i looked at every option out there. this was the best for us, given the time and tours we wanted to do in Rome, although the connection time isnt ideal. im less concerned about delays getting home. as long as we get there smoothly that's all that really matters.
