Carnival - Pride (bad experience)

See, and maybe because I've only cruise NCL and CCL, I found them pretty much to be the same decor wise. I don't think I'm obtuse to the aesthetics of these vessels, but I wouldn't call CCL's ships "crappy". (Oh no, I reserve that term for NCL's older ships. The Majesty was truly a crappy vessel -- so was the Sea.) But NCL's Gem was just as gaudy as any Carnival ship I've been on. I guess I'd have to be exposed to RCL's ships to be truly conversant on the issue, but I'll be honest, I don't cruise for the decor.

I personally prefer the dark, exactly for those reasons.

NCL's Spirit is a gorgeous ship...the other two I sailed (The Star and the Sky) weren't as pretty...but that's the thing, NCL's ships are each at least slightly different. Even though CCL ships all have different 'themes', they all still look the same to me. But, like you, I do not sail for decor. The most important thing on the ship to me is the crew. Which brings to mind a huge difference...A lot of people don't think the crew on CCL (or NCL for that matter) are 'as good as' Celebrity and RCI. Personally, the difference between the two to me is not the service, but how it is presented.

I found Celebrity crew to be very formal. To some this equates to better. If that's what makes you happy then it IS better. But for me, I am much more comfortable with crew that smiles and laughs and makes jokes and brings your bucket of beer with an ice sculpture made from crushed ice in the bucket. I prefer the crew to be less uptight. I don't like to feel like I am the master, and they the servant. It makes me uncomfortable...but some people like the opposite. if you are used to that stiff formality, then going on CCL and experiencing the laid-back-ness of ther crew could put you off I would imagine.

RCCL ships are gorgeous. But the cruise experience itself (for me) was not good enough to give up what I have on CCL or NCL just to have a prettier ship. Like I said, I don't write any line off...I'm sure I'll sail them again.

As for the darkness of CCL ships...it doesn't bother me at all because I spend my days outdoors. Some people might prefer something a little brighter while indoors and I certainly can't blame them. When I was on the EOS, I did very much enjoy the views from every public room. But that's me.

It was nice to have a change. I personally don't understand the brand loyalty. I like variety myself.

I stayed away from Carnival for a very long time. I just didn't think I'd like the product. But I finally decided to give it a try a couple of years ago and was very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it and how similar it is to Princess, the other line I've cruised most often. I went with low expectations and an open mind and came back with lots of compliements and no complaints. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the decor, having only seen pictures of it online. It was much more subdued in real time.

Every time I price a cruise I just cannot justify spending 50-100% more on another line for pretty much the same experience. I went back to Princess last year for a specific itinerary. I'm doing pretty much the same one on Carnival next year, at almost half the price - leaving me much more money to spend while on the cruise itself.

As for comparisons to Target or Walmart, that's ok with me. I like those stores. I think they give good value for their prices, which is all you can ask. I don't have lots of money to spend so I try to get the most value whenever I can. But those stores, like Carnival, are not for everyone. And that's ok too. Someone has to pay the big prices. It just isn't going to be me.

There are lines I've cruised on that I'm not anxious to go back to (Costa, NCL), but I don't go on those boards and bash them. Other people like them and that's fine. Besides, one day there may be a sale on one of those lines that I can't resist and I don't want anyone reminding me that I once said terrible things about them.

One thing people should keep in mind about all cruise lines is that they have all had to cut back this year, which is going to show up in a number of ways, including the number of crew available (longer wait times for prepared food like omelettes and deli sandwiches; slower room cleanup), the variety and quality of menu selections, and the amount and type of entertainment.

Last year, on the first night on our cruise, we could have a New York strip steak. This year, it's a flatiron steak. The grand buffet is gone (no great loss there). So is the fruit punch. There's no denying that the overall cruise experience is not what it was a year ago. For that matter, the experience a year ago wasn't what it was two years ago for the same reason.

However, every cruise line is doing the same thing. People who cruised RCCI or Princess in past years are comparing this year's Carnival to last year's RCCI and that's like comparing apples to oranges. I guarantee that an objective assessment of RCCI would reveal just as many problems and cutbacks. That's what the cruise lines have to do to survive in a recession.

Every restaurant is doing this. We recently ate at a local restaurant that had a printed card at the table apologizing for cutting their menu down by about half. The explanation: they couldn't keep offering a lot of dishes few people ate and still keep their prices.

My seven day cruise this year costs the same as my first, five-day cruise four years ago. I'm very grateful for that. There have been cutbacks and I don't like that, but the alternative is spending next week watching soap operas and football games on TV.

Carnival is struggling to keep everyone happy, and constructive criticism in cases where they've cut a bit too much helps (it's impossible to figure out other than by trial-and-error just how many crew you can cut back before service suffers "too much"). But passengers have to be realistic about today's economy and what reasonably to expect, not just on Carnival but on any cruise line.

Well stated. I work in a restaurant and can identify with everything you said. I'll also add that it's not just cruiselines and restaurants that are cutting back, but also individuals and families are making the tough decisions to cut out this or that just to make the mortgage payment or put dinner on the table. In these tough times, I'm glad that Carnival is able to still deliver a good product that I can afford to enjoy. Have I noticed some cutbacks? Yes. Does it bother me? No. Just being realistic.

The OP wasn't happy with their choice of ship to begin with and "settled" for a ship out of Balitmore that they did not have to fly to get to. This attitude was definitely passed along to their children. How can you make a determination on an entire trip before the ship has even left the harbour?

The OP was negative from the beginning long before boarding the ship and looked for things that would back up his/her opinion.

Most kids don't care about their surroundings. They just want to be off and playing and away from their parents to do the things that kids do. Kids will find other kids to have a good time with. Unless this family is really, really, really wealthy and feels they were traveling beneath their station and everyone else they encountered was not worthy of their attention.

A lot negativity in the OP's post and preconceived opinions even before the ship left Baltimore!

You will be if you listen to the OP and some others here. Go with a good attitude, a smile on your face and no negativity. The Pride is a Spirit class ship and one of my favorites. I was on the Spirit last month for the second time and loved the ship.

Thanks for the comment. I have been on the Spirit several times and LOVE the ship.

I got to pretty much agree quite a bit with Dan40 and his comments. Except for the Princess buffet - having sailed the Caribbean Princess twice and the Holiday and Splendor with Carnival I would definately say Princess did have a larger selection of breakfast items than Carnival did.

I guess the Holiday was a pretty dark ship when I really think about it but I truly didn't really give it any thought. As for the decor, while I like to look at the ships, etc I don't base my choice by the paint color the designer chose. I expect every ship to be different in its decor and one of the aspects I like are the different themes Carnival has done.

My sister's husband's biggest complaint on the Splendor was the buffet being one long line, he preferred the different stations on Princess. I will state too Princess had more late night dining options than Carnival offered. However neither would make me hate either cruise line.

As for the WalMart comments I truly don't get people who rag on them. Buying Tide, Tylenol, Bounty, Crest doesn't make those products any better just because you chose to pay more for them. I am always amazed at people that would pay more for the same item when they can get it cheaper else where. Those to me are people that have money to throw away.

Just came back from Bahamas cruise with Carnival – Pride, (21 Aug – 29 Aug 2009)

In last couple of years, I had used many times on this board for searching as much information as helpful before my cruises. I am very appreciated for all the help and assistance that I received/used from other people (the selection of cruise lines/ships, shore excursions etc..), and this time I would like to pay a little back (share my experience), in order to help others, hopefully, for a right selection before the cruise, and avoid the mistakes as I toke at this time.

Background – we are family 4 (with two kids) and had cruised in every summer for last five years, and our first cruise was in 1996 (with Carnival). Beside that, all of our other cruises are with Princess and Royal Caribbean. We had cruised with Crown Princess and Freedom of Sea (Royal Caribbean) and the others. Everyone in my family loves cruise and we had good time always, except this time with Carnival Pride, very, very DISAPPOINTED.

We choose the Pride this year, since we could not define the summer schedule until late in May, and we are tied of flight to the ports in other cities (Seattle, Miami, Fl etc.) every year. So we decided to pick up the cruise ship from the local port (Baltimore, MD) and most importantly, the itinerary looks good (we have never been to Half Moon Cay).

First, I’d like to fairly list some (few) positive things: the cabins are larger and comfortable, the islands (especially Half Moon Cay) are beautiful.

But overall, it turns out a BAD, very BAD experience:

The ship quality - real old fashion, bad design (low ceiling, dark even with sunshine outside), old decoration.

Dining/food – terrible, terrible and terrible, both on buffet and in dinning room. Even with pizza, smell as left over for several days. The food selection is very limited and taste is awful. The food does not change daily at all in the buffet, same food in breakfast every day (only change is from Pancakes to French toast, which they switched over every day). Every item is in separately locations and you have to wait on the different lines in order for the multiple choices (related to bad ship design). After 3:00PM (very accurate on time), everything is cleaned/closed except cheese Hamburg, that taste is also awful. I had salad only for lunch for several days.

Ship Staff – Bad service, from most staffs (no smiling, no greeting in the morning/not friendly), except few are good. The ratio of Good vs. Bad is about 2/10, even the dealers in casino, worth than any dealers in any other high quality casinos in AC and Vegas (Borgata, Paris, MGM, Venetian, etc.)

Entertainment & Activities – I have to fairly say the dancers/singers are average, but with a small, old design stage, the show becomes less enjoyable.

I had done a lot of researches before my final decision. I remembered that the first review I read (from this board) on the negative things about his trip with Carnival Pride and his comments - if you ever had cruised with Princess and Royal Caribbean, don’t go with Carnival, it is a totally different (lower) class ship". Now my personnel experience approves his point. I regret that I did not take his comments but more stay on the side with other positive reviews.

In fact:

  • When we first got on the ship, while sitting in Buffet, by looking around and first thing I said to my kids:" I am so sorry for my selection, but please understand that this time we were in the rush".
  • My daughter (13 yrs old) could not wait to check out her room before first lunch on the ship and run back said:" the whole ship is so crappy ".
  • During the cruise, I was asking my kids:"would you spend the money to go a good quality cruise (expensive) or equally go to two cheaper cruises?" They responded:" we’d rather stay home than the cruise with this kind of ship.

This review definitely is not helpful for the first time cruiser, or the lifetime cruisers with Carnival only.

My purpose of this post is to share my opinion/experience with others, and hopefully could help them for the right cruise selection. I understand that many people have different opinions and may completely disagree with me. Please don’t argue/fight with me. We could have a different standard, and I may have done in comparison with many points on the cruise ships we had previously.

My bottom line: We will never sail with CARNIVAL, anymore!!!

Well it sounds to me that you were dead set on not enjoying the cruise before it even started.

I have sailed on the Pride, and thus far, she is my favorite ship.

I can't believe that ALL the food was awful. It sounds to me that you have a problem with yourself, and your parenting skills, not Carnival.

Not all Carnival ships and cruises are perfect, but I find it hard to believe that this Pride voyage was so awful.

The new NCL ships and their stations are an enormous upgrade from the long Disney-like line for food.

I hope Carnival, which I have never sailed on, has the same variety as the NCL Gem and Pearl. If so, I would rate it a top-notch buffet (if you are an anti-buffet snob, you would never call any of them top-notch).

I have yet to find a buffet afloat to rival the Gem.

The Gem,/Pearl buffets don't just have extraordinary variety.

Everything is cook fresh to virtual order. French toast and pancakes come right off the grill and on to your plate. No vats for these items.

Same with pizza.

I hope on the Pride I am not too disappointed. Just got to reset my expectations. Good thing I am not a spoiled 11 year-old. (LOL)

Well, if you're looking at more criteria then just the buffet, you should be good! While I loved the Gem's buffet, I found Carnival surpassed NCL in every other catagory. ;)

Keep an open mind and you'll have fun.

I always had pizza right out of the oven on the Pride. They couldn't make it fast enough at most times. Man I miss my late night tradition LOL

I have an open mind and am expecting a great cruise on the Pride.

I have been cruising since 1989 on those old Costa ships and my worst cruise experience would be described as "outstanding."

I am astounded that people would let their cruises be undermined by things like the decor, lighting, crew that doesn't act like an indentured servant, etc.

Geez!!!!!!!

I appreciate other's opinions of ships, but I must be pretty low class as I loved the Pride. I had a different itinerary out of Long Beach but the ship was great to me.

Anywho, I quoted this part of your review as I just don't understand why you had to apologize to your kids.....

I'm right there with ya! I've been on 5 cruises (twice on the Pride) and Pride is my favorite ship to date!

Interesting, and kind of funny... I just returned from my 1st RCI cruise and much of what the OP complained about with the Pride and her comparisons of Carnival to RCI, I would have said the exact opposite.

The breakfast choices on RCI were the exact same every day. The food on RCI was inferior to the food we've had on every Carnival cruise. The staff on RCI was much less friendly and personable than the staff on every Carnival cruise we've taken. And last, the entertainment on RCI was much more amaturish than any of the shows we've seen on Carnival.

Would I cruise RCI again? Yes (as long as the price was reasonable). But our preference, based on our one RCI experience is definitely with Carnival.

So as they saying goes about certain body parts and opinions.... everybody has them!

What exactly did the OP expect to see at breakfast that he/she did not?

I usually see 20-30 options and cannot think of anything missing. If it were, I would be happy with fresh fruit and cereal.

That's exactly what I was wondering... maybe I'm just not that imaginative but I don't know what else they could offer. Smoked salmon is available at the deli line, theres cereals, pastries, fruit, omelets, breakfast meats, etc etc. If that's not enough, there's a more formal breakfast in the MDR. The only thing I can think of is that they don't serve eggs benedict on the Lido, but who really wants poached eggs sitting under a heat lamp??? Gross.

I have a hard time taking this review seriously. If the OP truly wanted to provide useful information for future cruisers they would have gone into more specifics on their experiences on the ship. All I got from their long winded paragraph about their hellish vacation was that they are a family of winers.

After all the complaints, they forgot to mention the bathroom tissue! To the OP-- was your tender bottom more attended to on your Princess or RCCL vacations???
