Hi everyone,

Thinking of booking a cruise to celebrate a 50th birthday but don't want to be the youngist on board or the oldist in the nightclub.

Not wanting to be rude but what is the average age of passangers on board. We've never cruised Hal but we thinking Hal, Celebrity or Princess. Is their a lot of families with young children on board?

Whats the evening entertainment like, my hubby is a night owl and rarely goes to bed before 2am.

Thankyou in advance for any information.

I think it will depend on the length of the cruise, and wear its going. We have been cruising since we were in our early 30's we are in our 60's now. We were't the youngst then, (kids don't count) and I don't think we will be the oldest now.

Depends on your ship's itinerary and time of year.

On our Alaskan trip, average age range was 35- 75.

And there wasn't much activity after midnight because we were in ports very early in the morning.

Age is such a subjective thing... yes the avg age on HAL (with some differences based on length of cruise and itinerary) will be 60+ But the most entertaining, fun loving couple we've met in 9 cruises was a 91 and 90 yr old that we had at our dinner table on HAL who still loved life and had a sense of humor that wouldn't quit. In contrast, we've met 40 yr olds who could just as well have stayed home and complained about everything, saving the cost of travel.

We travel w/ another couple where I have known him since we were 12... we are still 12 yr olds, although now trapped in 60 yr old bodies.

HAL suits us just fine, but unless you travel at normal school break times, there will be relatively few kids on board.

And as for nite life.. there is precious little of it after 11:30 or so, although I'm not an expert on that as we are part of the crowd who are in bed by 11 or so.

Has been 9 yrs since we were on Celebrity and we haven't been on Princess at all, but from what I know of those 2 lines, they are likely a better choice for your needs than HAL.

Don't know if you have asked this same question on the Celebrity or Princess boards but you might consider doing that to get input from their typical clientele.

We love HAL and have taken 7 of our 9 cruises with them, but we are all looking for different things in a cruise experience. Have a great trip no matter what you decide.

I think I heard once . . . in a Q&A session for press onboard . . . that the average age fleet-wide in 57, and they are aiming for an average fleet-wide age of 54. Obviously on a 7 day Caribbean it will skew younger, and on a round-the-world cruise, older. I personally think the economy makes a difference as well . . . when the rates drop a lot of retirees in Florida think, "Why stay home when I can cruise at rates like these?"

Regards, Richard

This is great news as I never feel like I'm younger than average anymore. (at 52 & 53) I do think it's all a matter of your spirit and as long as there are lots of fun, interesting people on the Eurodam in February that will be great. We will be with my brother and his wife who are six years older so you gotta love that too! We are not night owls though and on our last cruise we were all tucked in by 11.

I was on a spring break cruise last March. I was 33, my cousin was 30, and her husband was 33. My cousin was easily the youngest adult aboard the ship leaving her husband and I close to the bottom. This was a 7 day Caribbean cruise. There were a lot of older folks and by older I mean 70's and 80's +. We had a great time! The people were friendly and the service was great. The nightlife was non-existent. I went to the club one evening at about 10 and I was the only person legally able to consume. The rest were teens! It didn't bother me much as I am not a club kind of girl these days, anyway! If your husband doesn't like to go to bed before 2AM I am thinking he'll be lonely. The ship seemed to roll up the carpets by about 11:30 or so. Now, if your husband doesn't mind being alone it's not a big deal. My husband would be in heaven with his book in a quiet spot until the wee hours. It's all about preference!

They give out valet tickets in the dining room for the walkers - Just Kidding.

If you are sailing over a holiday, like Thanksgiving or Christmas, there are lots of families, so the ages are younger. During non-holiday times, I found the average age is about 20 years older than on RCCL and 10 years older than Princess passengers. Lots of people in their 70s and 80s, but also a fair amount in their 50s and 60s. Not many younger than that and very few kids.

My wife and I, who are in our early 40's, did a 10 day Caribbean cruise on the Holland Noordam in mid-January 2008 from NYC. While it did skew a little older than the 10 day NCL cruises we did, there was a fair amount of people in their 30's,40's and 50's. There was even a decent size group of college students.

I agree with some of the others that the time of year and the itinerary will play a big factor as to age on the ship. On the longer cruises, you will find an older crowd, as they are the ones that have the time to cruise.

Hi everyone,

Whats the evening entertainment like, my hubby is a night owl and rarely goes to bed before 2am.

At 2AM he'll have the ENTIRE ship to himself, or nearly. MOST HAL ships go to sleep around 9PM, at least on a longer cruise.

I actually prefer an older crowd. It makes me feel younger, and there's less competition for deck chairs!

And although it's not as great for girl-watching as a Carnival cruise, it gives me a much better chance to win the Men's Sexy Legs contest.;)

DH and I are in our mid 40s and will be doing a 7-day on the Eurodam in Dec and I'm actually looking forward to being one of the "kids" on the ship!

It's going to be a real ego-booster for me to be one of the 'young ladies' strolling on the lido deck in my bikini on the Eurodam vs. when I'll be cruising again next Feb. on the Carnival Dream and that ship will be full of lots of young 20-somethings!

And we don't mind closing the casino every night...the casino manager got to know us very well on our last HAL cruise as did the casino bartender :)

We did HAL Westerdam in April 2008, in the caribbean and that was not true. My then 23 year old daughter did karaoke and the disco every evening, and was never back in our stateroom until 2 am. She buddied up with a gal, mid thirties, from our roll call, who was a night owl, but whose hubby was, more like my hubby and I, he liked to go to sleep by midnight. The 2 of them had a lot of fun together.

That cruise I would say the average age was mid to late thirties-those my age and older were in the minority-and those my daughter's age was in the minority.

However, our Alaska cruise, yes the age was much older (2001-we were in our mid forties and felt like the "babies" of the bunch) and nothing much was going on after 10-but -part of the problem was the majority of us were from the east coast-and so 8pm felt like midnight-even hubby and I had a hard time staying up to 11-although we were considerably younger.

On our Wester Carrbbean cruise aboard the Veendam last January, we were told by the assistant Cruise Director that the average age was 67. Not sure if this was true but there was very little late night activity.

That class of ship does not attract the younger-the vista class does.

Wow - here is my 2 cents

Hal is a Great Place to Celebrate your 50th Birthday, my sister has planed her 50th on an Alaskan Cruise & we all get to come along too.

Our TA calls HAL the Blue Hair Cruise line & that's why we Love It!

No Sloppy drunks on board & lots of friendly folks to visit with.

We are 48 & 56

We were just on Zaandam 9/4/09 to Alaska, as I look around one day, I noticed I was no longer the youngest on board, the folks around us looked about the same age, I pouted.

We Love being around fun loving older folks.

Last October we were on the Royal Princess Fall NE/Canada 10day Cruise and it was the "Power Scooter Race Cruise" We had a blast watching it all and being the youngest folks on the cruise. Great vibrant folks on this one. Very rough seas the first 3 nights.

Before that, the OOsterdam to Mexico - quite a mixed age group and a bit of late night partying & Alaska was quite mixed but an older crowd overall.

Lets not talk about the NCL cruise - not my style - I made a mistake with that one.

So, check everything out and go where you have dreamed to go for your 50th, Check out all the cruise lines and Pick the one that best suits your lifestyle.

Do NOT be price sensitive when picking your birthday cruise.

Be Destination/itinerary Sensitive, ship sensitive & Cruise Line sensitive

And it will be the Birthday Cruise of your Dreams

Invite your friends and family along but, do not adjust the type of cruise you want to fit Them.

Its Your trip and they get to come along.

Have a ball & Happy 50th

I (50) have had the privileged of introducing several friends and family to HAL primarily because I think it is a great line. I have always warned them that the average age is 60+ but that I have always met great folks aboard. I was on the Westerdam Alaska cruise on 8/2/09 and was surprised to find the average age on that trip was about 40. Still had a great time. My new Son In Law was with us and he is 27. He hooked up with about 10 other single males his age and they had a blast. So I think as previously posted, the age will vary on the ship, the itinerary and the time of year. My next HAL trip will be in Europe and I would think the average age on that one will be back in the 60+ range just because of the time and cost of the flight over.

Age on HAL cruises reminds me of the concepts of fuzzy mathematics. It sometimes appears older .. but the older folks act younger .. then it might seem younger .. but some of the young folks portend age.

In the end it depends on frame of mind .. not calendar .. for the most part.

We are in our 50's and we both wish we could celebrate each birthday on a HAL cruise..Go and enjoy the fine service. We look forward to our next Eurodam cruise. Our rebooking of an HAL cruise was based on the wonderful time we experienced on our last HAL cruise. When we decided to book our next cruise my partner told me to just find us a Dam Ship to go on. We are hooked on HAL.!!!
