Health Inspections on cruise ships

What entity does routine health inspections of ship's kitchens and spa/gym areas similar to those required on land ? How often are these ship fascilities inspected ?

The Centers for Disease Control handle cruise ship health inspections. The Coast Guard handles the safety inspections. This applies to ships that sail from the US or include US port stops (completely foreign vessels would not be included here.)

It sounds like you might be worried - if so, don't be. :) I worked restaurants all through college and know what proper food handling and cleaning techniques are so I tend to be observant of those things. Everything I've seen on Carnival they are doing the right thing and the ships are spotless - much more so than a lot of restaurants you might eat in at home! :eek:

Thanks for the reply :) I am not worried, just a bit curious and concerned. You may have worked for good restaurant but my husband was a local truck driver who saw a lot of kitchens in restaurants and some of the "best" gave a LOT of cause for concern.

Some good, some bad. I worked for an Applebees that was so clean you could eat off the floor. A Ruby Tuesday I worked for wasn't nearly as good. The very worst was a 4 star historic hotel - i always maintained that someone was paying off the health inspector as that place was NASTY in the kitchens.

Years ago when we cruised on the Elation, I was reading on the Lido deck. It was before lunch and the cooks were filling the lines. One of them took a spoon and tested the food right there. His superior caught him and he was reprimanded on the spot. I couldn't hear what was said but it appeared to be very stern, the cook was extremely embarrassed.

Each ship must attain a rating of 86 to pass inspection. If they fall under 86 they only have a short time to clean up their act without being prohibited from porting in the U.S.

 

Carnival is consistently in the high 90's as are most mass market cruise lines.
