txbird Posted September 28, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 28, 2009 I will be on RCCL's Brilliance of the Seas that will be docked at Valletta, Malto on Dec. 2nd, from 7am until 2pm. I am wondering if I will have time to visit the Hypogeum while I am there. Does anyone know how long it takes to get there from the dock and/or what the best way is to get there? Any info or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted September 28, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 28, 2009 You will find quite a bit of information on the Hypogeum on the "Other Mediterranean Ports" board. Here is a search that turned up the most relevant posts: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/search.php?searchid=14497161
txbird Posted September 29, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted September 29, 2009 Cynthia, Thanks for trying to help me, but your link sent me to a dead end, and I can't seem to find anything on "Other Med Ports." gerena Posted September 29, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 29, 2009 Yes, you should have time to make the visit. It is close to the cruise dock---at least the HAL one! We had a very interesting visit. However, only so many are allowed to visit in a day and you must go in at a specified time. You must make advanced reservations. Malta is a wonderful island. Too bad you don't have more time there.

Beauseant Posted October 3, 2009 #8 Share Posted October 3, 2009 Hello txbird, Here's some info :) click here: boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1046600 (In MSC Cruises :Splendida cruise + some Malta info..... post 11:) Malta is also known for it's neolithic temples. Some of these pre-date the Pyramids of Giza by over 1000 years and are World Heritage Sites. The following link takes you to the Malta's official museum agency, in which you will find all info about prices/opening hours etc. http://www.heritagemalta.org/home.html For me the NICEST neolithic site in Malta is the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni; Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola: One of Europe’s most extraordinary prehistoric sites, Hal Saflieni is a vast underground burial complex carved from solid rock. Malta’s most astonishing ancient treasure, this vast, 5,000-year-old underground cemetery was hewn by hand from the rock. It was here that the famous sculpture of the “Sleeping Lady” was found (see National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta). If you see only one megalithic site in Malta, make it this one – but be sure to book your ticket well ahead. Beauseant Posted October 24, 2009 #10 Share Posted October 24, 2009 Next time you check for info about Malta, check it under the "Europe" part of the forums. Malta is part of europe (smallest nation in the EU) and not part of Africa or middle east :)
