Eurodam Obstructed Cabin & Guarantee

Well, silly me. About 4 months ago I though ~$1400pp for a Veranda cabin on the Eurodam New Year's Eve cruise from Ft. Lauderdale was too high, and would come down due to the economy. I know the cruise lines have been having a difficult time filling ships this year and had been doing a lot of last-minute discounting.

 

But, it seems as if the consumer has been more resilient than many thought (look at the stock prices of RCL/CCL...), and in fact the pricing continued to increase over the past few months (to about $1800pp), and now the Verandahs are completely sold out. :mad:

 

I can get a category "G" partially obstructed view for about $1,450, which I think I will be willing to pay at this point. (My parents are already booked on this cruise and we'd like to join them, but I don't have a job... :()

 

I've done the research here and understand that the "G" category rooms are pretty decent, with full-length windows etc. But I'm debating going with a guarantee or not.

 

What are the possible upgrades? Could I be put in a bottom-deck (Main deck) unobstructed ocean view? Can't tell if those are a higher category or not (alphabet soup). Or is a Verandah stateroom the most likely upgrade from "G"? Lastly, are there any particularly bad "G" rooms?

 

Trying to weigh the certainty of a cabin assignment against what I might or might not get with a guarantee.

You might get upgraded to an oceanview but I highly doubt you would get upgraded to a verandah. We sailed in an obstructed view (H category--having been upgraded from HH) on Eurodam and it was fine--- great light from floor to ceiling windows! We really don't spend much time in the cabin--usually out & about on the upper decks, etc. and only use it to sleep & change!

My kids and various family members and friends have booked obstructed view from time to time - HH guarantee I think it was - and they always moved one or two categories to a "less obstructed view" cabin in the same area.

 

Here's a thought: Book a specific G cabin and ask your TA to let you know if there is an upsell. That way you might be able to get something nice for a little more money. I imagine cabins come back into the inventory all the time.

Now it looks as if there are a bunch of regular (non-obstructed view) ocean view staterooms available (still no verandah's...) in categories C, D, DD, E and F. However, these are all on the bottom deck, which doesn't seem desireable to me.

 

Any thoughts on whether a fully obstructed view (GG/H/HH) on deck 4 would still be better than a full view on deck 1? Particularly if the price is $300/pp additional?

We booked an H guarantee on the Eurodam. Prices never went down afterwards and we ended up assigned exactly what we'd booked H fully obstructed. That was ok, but we were offered a good price on an upsell to a VA and accepted. One reason for accepting the upsell, besides price & wanting a balcony, is that one of us is very short. She can't see over the obstructions at all. (We'd had one on the Oosterdam.)

The obstructed cabins on the Vista ships & the Eurodam are the same as a balcony cabin, but without the balcony. There is also lots of light through those big floor to ceiling windows. The location is very good - middish part of ship; 1 to 3 decks from main dining room, show room, several lounges, front desk, casino, shops; 5 decks up to the lido & 7 to the Crows Nest. It is really a much better location than the ocean view cabins on deck 1.

Last year we sailed on the new Carnival Splendor, 16 day Trans Atlantic and we had a bottom deck, OV, mid ship.....it was fine.....actually very smooth!

On the Spledor Deck #2 above us was all staterooms and NOT public areas.

 

Based on these boards I booked a Cat. G, mid ship, part obstructed on the Eurodam 2/6/10. If I remember Eurodam Deck 1 is below public areas so we opted to stay with our G on Deck 4. I waived any opportunity for any upgrade because I did not want to be either forward, aft or bottom.

 

I'd save your $$$ and stay put. It's a stateroom you shower and sleep in and $300pp is a good savings.....IMHO:)
