RadioRay Posted October 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 16, 2009 If you're on an older ship, the small safe in you cabin MAY need a credit card to open and close. First off, that credit card is NOT to charge you for using the safe. It's free. They just use the magnetic strip on the back as a unique code. You swipe once to lock it, swipe again with the same card to unlock it. There's no external connection so don't worry about your credit card number being charged. But, if you're like me, the first thing you want to keep in your safe is your wallet including your credit cards. Here's the tip: ANY card with a mag strip seems to work. This trip I used and old expired Starbucks gift card. Worked fine. The real credit cards go in the safe, the Starbucks card I carry or creatively hide elsewhere in the cabin. While I didn't try it, I would NOT suggest using your Seapass. If you forget it somewhere, it's a free pass to your cabin and the safe. The newer ships, like Freedom, use a safe with a keyboard. Enter a 4 digit code (think ATM code) it locks. Same code again opens. MUCH easier solution. Then the only think you need to bring back to your cabin is your memory. Somewhat a challenge after some serious drinking ;) The safes are small. You might get a netbook computer in it but forget about anything like a real laptop. Just fine for your wallet, keys, cell phones, cameras, things like that. But nothing bigger. Ray
cb at sea Posted October 16, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2009 Most ships have the 4-digit code..only the really old ships use that stupid "card" thing....they should change it...it's NOT secure at all. The safes are larger than most "hotel" safes. Big enough for multiple wallets, camera, jewelry, chips from the casino (should you win any!!!)....not big enough for a laptop. Lock computers in your luggage, if you're concerned about thievery....and you needn't be!
cruiserbryce Posted October 17, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 17, 2009 not ALL ships have safes in the cabin. RC's Monarch and Majesty still dont. They can hold items at the Pursers desk if needed

Going down 5 decks to put away your camera isn't really practical. Ray

For the company or companies that make in-room safes are making them large enough, that they can hold a laptop. And they are being installed in hotel rooms, but I don't know of any cruise line that has yet installed them in the ship's cabins.
scarolinagrl23 Posted December 13, 2009 #6 Share Posted December 13, 2009 We had the digit code on Enchantment. My hubby and I laughed once we realized that there was no where to slide a card, no matter how hard we tried to find a slot!
galamars Posted December 13, 2009 #7 Share Posted December 13, 2009 Thanks guys, was just thinking about this. How safe would you recommend the safes with the number pads? I guess I ask because some hotels have number pad safes, but I've managed to break into one before without knowing that's what I was doing
paul929207 Posted December 13, 2009 #8 Share Posted December 13, 2009 With a 4 digit code, you have a 1 in 10,000 chance of guessing it. If you leep trying the chances go up. Some one on the ship can open the safe if you forget your code or leave it locked when you debark.
