Please forgive my typos in advance I am trying to do this on my iPhone. I will do much more detail tomorrow but quick bits...

Yesterday I did a lot of shopping in Honolulu before grabbing lunch in front of the USC game. Ohhhh what happened to my Trojans? Oh well if anything can take away the sting it is Hawaii!

After lunch and the game we did the Old Ghosts of Honolulu tour. It was a bit corny, and lots of walking - which ordinarily I wouldn't mind but after walking about four miles already that day. It also meant I have no info for anyone about dinner or the Halloween festivities.

Today was, thankfully, my one day off from the gym until disembarkation. I took full advantage by getting pancakes and bacon in the dining room. I have to say I don't usually like cruise ship pancakes but these were quite good - fluffy and accompanied by sprinkled powder sugar.

Thankfully we docked into Kauai this morning. The last time I took this cruise the weather was too rough and since it is my favorite place in all the world I was really holding my breath. My Mom and I rented a car so we could go about the island. We dropped DH off at Poipu beach for snorkeling - the report back was that it was good except for the idiot snorkeler towing a chum bag. Okay this beach has a history of a couple of tiger shark attacks - not a smart move mister.

Mom and I drove around the island and had a lot of fun. We did rum tasting at the Kilohana plantation, and lots of shopping. The best part is I have been dreaming of a curly koa wood jewelry box and DH gave me permission to get a gorgeous one!!! It is my Christmas present and I am not allowed to have it until then so for now it is wrapped up under the cabin bed in my suitcase. I had been looking at thfm forever so I am thrilled. I did have to make embarassing statements about being married to Superstud Superman but if you saw how gorgeous this jewelry box was you would know it was worth it!!

We then picked up MIL and aunt from the ship - they just came back from their tour at the Fern Grotto (the verdict was thd scenery was beautiful but the singing left a little to be desired). The five of us then drove to lunch at Keoki's Paradise in Poipu. They have my fave drink in all the world and I get it every time I visit Kauai - the frozen mai tai - it was as delicious as ever!!

We then just got back onboard and are getting ready for dinner while watching the World Series - ugh the Yankees just scored! :(

We are now pulling away so I will turn off the iPhone. Onward to Maui!

I was lucky enough to meet Marilyn and Teresa (Rodagnas) but not the others and not Largin.

In Hilo we rented a car, drove up to the volcano and part way around (part of the road is closed, so you have to backtrack). We ate lunch in Volcano, and hit the Orchid place - almost bought one for our daughter in Alaska, but they need to have an address where the person will be all day, and I didn't have her work address.

In Honolulu we went to Shangri La - Doris Duke, the tobacco heiress and once the richest woman in the world, gave her Hawaii home to the Honolulu Academy of Arts. For $25 you can tour her house including a bus ride from the Academy and free admission there. We'd done it once before and enjoyed it just as much this time. Lots of Middle East artifacts and furniture.

Today was Kauai - we actually booked a tour - too much OBC to use unless we throw it away in the casino. We went to the Wailua River and Fern Grotto tour as that was the cheapest one. Not bad, no great thrill. We've been here in Kauai before - even had an Elderhostel quite a few years ago, so had been most places.

The weather has been great - a few showers in Hawaii coming down off the volcano, but otherwise sunny/cloudy. Nancy

Nancy,

Did you make arrangements for the tour of Doris Duke's home before you started on the cruise? I don't think Princess does a tour there. I would like to see it. I went through her home in Newport Rhode Island.

You were in the c.c. group on the March 17th 2008 R.T. Hawaii on the Diamond with us. Some of us from that cruise are taking this one on March.

Hi Nancy - We booked on line before we left, but some people just came up and were able to go too. I'd book ahead - we took the 11:00 tour, and looked around the Honolulu Academy of Arts before we did that. Look under Shangri La and you can get plenty of information as well as see some of the rooms. Nancy

One more grade I forgot to add..

Chef's Table ... C+ This was our third and did not compare to the first two.. The steak and lobster in the Crown Grill was far superior to the steak and lobster served at the Chef's Table..

Largin,

We did our first Chef's Table on the 10/11 cruise. Our entree was fillet, scallops and a small lobster tail. We had the fillet and lobster at the Crown Grill and the steak and scallops were better at the Chef's Table. The second Chef's Table had Osso Buco and another entree. Five couples from our Roll Call attended that Chef's Table and enjoyed their experience. Each dinner experience varies.

So yesterday was Maui. It was a day spent with lots of shopping (including a wooden tiki to put in our garden next to the hibiscus and bromeliad plants, as well as a Hawaiian shirt with ukulele print). It was very hot (probably more than any other day seemed) and the line to take the tender back to the ship was quite long. There was no metal detector, so you had to wait while your bags were searched and then you were scanned with a wand, all prior to the xray machine back onboard. It all added up to quite a long wait ashore in the hot sun of Lahaina.

I didn't have a large dinnner yesterday since we had a really big lunch at Cheeseburger in Paradise on Front Street (the island style hamburger with teriyaki sauce and pinapple was quite good, and the onion rings were great). So dinner was just the pineapple with margarita dip appetizer (really like a lime yoghurt dip) and a salad with honey mustard dressing. I skipped the entree and had a couple of bites of the strawberry shortcake dessert that I shared with my Mom.

The casino hasn't been too kind to us on this sailing, with our entire party in the hole for blackjack, slots and craps. I don't gamble though, so I'm the only one who isn't down money...though I certainly have spent quite a bit shopping.

Today was very windy (too windy to jog on deck) so I opted for the treadmill in the gym. Breakfast was cream of wheat (yay!) and fruit -- both the papaya and pineapple are terrific onboard the ship.

Today is filled with activities -- morning trivia, intermediate ukulele class, the Survivor challenge (go team Hilo!), afternoon trivia and more. I may skip formal night dinner (it depends on the menu) as they are having the Bavarian buffet for dinner. I remember on a couple of Princess cruises the German lunch/dinner was terrific -- wonderful cabbage and weinerschnitzel. But the last few times it has been mainly the wurst sausages and leathery pretzels. So here is to hoping that tonight will be better!

Hi Waimea's Mom,

Is there a coffee machine in the rooms on the Golden. We have a small 2cup we can bring if not as being Canadian we love our "Timmies" lol.

Thanks for taking the time to post...really enjoying your write-ups!

Don't think they allow plug ins for anything in your room. At least to prepare food, beverage.

We are from the Buffalo area and Tim's is the best, so we know how you feel. Oh well, small price to pay for two weeks of relaxation and fun.

Thank you so much for posting. I love Hawaii. I lived there as a kid and have been back as an adult several times. I got married at the fern grotto. It was wonderful. Nothing like playning tiny bubbles on the ukulele. We had to learn to play it in school.:p We also had to learn to play the nose flute but they probably don't teach that on the ship.:D

Hi, no there are no coffee machines in the room, and as someone else stated, they really frown on you having devices like that plugged in (for fire safety reasons). The coffee in the dining room is great, and the room service coffee is fine, but don't drink the swill they serve at the Horizon Court! Almost every morning we have coffee delivered to room, which we then either have there or take up with us to the Horizon Court...the only exception to this is when we eat breakfast in the dining room (tough to do when the gym doesn't open until 7am and the dining room closes at 9am).

Yesterday was a really nice day at sea. We got killed in the trivia games (okay for the record, a parrot is not an animal family, a bird or avian is a family, a parrot is a type of that bird!!!!!!!!). Ukulele class was fun, as it was intermediate, and we did the song "Stand By Me." I think today's class will focus on "Aloha Oe," which I'm guessing we will be doing at hula today as well.

It is a really busy day today, with me running from trivia at 10am, ukulele at 1115, hula at 1pm, the Survivor finals (my honey is still in the running for Ultimate Survivor), more trivia at 4, and so on...

Dinner last night was formal, but since I had pizza for lunch (very good, thin crust), I wasn't very hungry. I didn't want to be the party pooper though, so I came along. Everyone else had the surf and turf filet with shrimps, I opted for the won ton soup (delicious!) and the salad with honey mustard dressing. I was oh so happy I came though when I found out they were serving cherries jubilee (one of my favorite desserts) -- which was definitely worth dressing up for.

Now that we have a few days left, I am really missing my cats at home. I have been doing quite a bit of traveling the last few months, and I'm very eager to get back home for a little while. Don't get me wrong, I've had a very good cruise (and the trip was worth it for that terrific koa jewelry box I got that I've been wanting forever). But I'm ready to get back home to the cats, my newspapers, my tv shows, etc. On that note, our DVR was on the fritz the morning we left, and I'm not sure how I'm going to survive if it didn't tape "Dexter" and "Glee" for me while I was gone.

There is also something to be said for having internet access anytime, all the time. Budgeting my time spent online is killing me!

I watch Glee at Hulu. Something about turning my brain to mush. Thanks to the posts. We'll be on her for Christmas.

Take care of my ship until then.

Is the Ukulele an easy instrument to learn and play?

Might just have a go!!

On board Golden Princess ,January 3rd 2010.

I was on the Hawaii cruise before this one. (Oct. 11th sailing) I knew from reading the boards on here that ukelele lessons were offered on the ship, but honestly I had no interest. We ended up going to a class our 2nd day at sea and fell in love! I am so glad we went!! I have never played guitar, so learning chords and such was completely new. At least there are only 4 strings on a ukelele! David Cole, the cruise director before he left for vacation, taught most of the classes. Dave from Elua also taught one of our classes and I assume that is who (and will) be teaching until David returns from vacation. Both are great teachers and clearly have such a love of the instrument. Anyway we ended up buying our own ukeleles in Hilo (great guitar shop that does not increase prices when the ships are in town!) We had a such a good time. I pick mine up and play it for a few minutes every night since we have been home. I think my dogs are tired of hearing Tiny Bubbles, but at least they haven't started howling! I am still very much a beginner so the dogs will have to suffer for a while longer.

I'm not sure where you are from but this week on the east coast Glee has not been on due to the world series. Love my Glee.

We will be sailing on her for Thanksgiving this year and already I'm fretting about leaving our fur kid (kitty) behind. I worry that she may think we abandoned her. She is very much a people kitty and I don't want her to feel lonely. Give your babies lots of hugs and I'm sure they'll forgive you for leaving them.

Thanks for posting while on your vacation. And I have to say you have a lot of restraint when it comes to food :o.

When I was looking at the bridgecams about an hour ago' date=' it looked like it was raining where the Golden is.[/quote']

It was "misting" for a short while, but generally the weather's been great. Dh was sitting outside for a while today (I'm working on a quilt and didn't want to lose any small pieces), and I'll go out when I'm ready to read my book. We lost at trivia today - only 17 when the winners had 19. Either amazing brains or they have had these questions before. Fortunately it's only a game, and we learn a lot. Nancy

Hi Nancy, I don't think I know you but we live in Sonoma county (Rohnert Park) & my Mother who passed away in 94 use to hand make Quilt tops for many years. When I was a Kid the Women in the little town I grew up in use to get together & quilt the rest of the quilt & the kids would get in trouble playing under the quilt. Our Son & DIL are on the Golden now & we are taking care of the Boys( three Cats) for them. Anyway Aloha. We were on this cruise last year at this time.:)

Ooh, lots to write...

First off, no rain -- it is very sunny and beautiful out here on our way back to the Mainland.

Second, it is funny you mention I've been disciplined on the food...yesterday I had a very big dinner! Breakfast was the same as always, Raisin Bran with skim milk and fruit. For lunch, I had a very little time break between ukulele and hula (an hour) so I chose the International Cafe. I got the chicken sandwich (be sure to have them use the panini press) and two oatmeal cookies. Yummy! Dinner last night was Italian night. I always find it funny that Italian is one of my least favorite types of cuisine (I'm much more a Mexican, Chinese or Korean fan) but I always really love the dinner on Italian night.

I got the prosciutto with cantaloupe -- which was good, as usual. I ordered the Bellini soup (as peaches and Prosecco are two of my favorite things), and it was delicious - a little sweet, but not too sweet and nicely chilled. I followed it with my favorite item on any Princess dinner menu, the spinach salad with pinenuts and honey mustard dressing. To go for broke, I got the spaghetti with meaballs which was really tasty. After all that, I didn't think I could justify dessert, so I didn't get any but my mother in law got the tirimisu and loved it.

Third, the ukulele is a very easy instrument to learn (only four strings, lots of one note chords) but it is a very hard instrument to master -- only four strings, and unless you use a low g (instead of the traditional high g string) you don't have a lot of notes to work with. But if you ever hear someone like Jake Shimbakuro, Aldrine Guerrero, Derick Sebastien, Brittni Paiva or Herb Ohta, Jr. you will be amazed at what they can do with those four strings. I'm no longer a beginner but I have come nowhere near mastering it, and I've been playing for about a year now. Still, I highly recommend that anyone onboard go for at least one class. I tried to convince the people in my party to join me, but none of them did. You have nothing to lose and you may discover an instrument you will love for a lifetime.

Dave from Elua does teach the classes. On my prior sailing, he taught a couple and David Cole did the rest. Dave is a super nice guy, and a very patient teacher. He is very complimentary to his students, and he gives a lot of positive reinforcement. Take for example when people tell them they have trouble with a particular chord, he will find ways to make it easier for them to play. My teacher at home told another girl in my class, "I don't know what to tell you. It is called playing a musical instrument." So with Dave you will have a lot of fun, and learn a great deal.

Be sure to do the hula lessons too! We have been going to those every day. Yesterday was in the Piazza (a little overwhelming due to the small stage and people hanging over the balconies watching) and today it was in the Vista lounge -- a much more comfortable environment with a larger stage.

Tomorrow is the dress rehearsal for the "Aloha Oe" ukulele and hula passenger performance. Since the Reflections DVD crew will be taping it (they can't tape the actual show for time constraint reasons), I will probably wear my sarong, flower and heirloom eyelash lei to the rehearsal.

If you haven't made eyelash leis before, they are very fun to make and easy as well. Yesterday Leialoha taught a class on them. I actually learned how to make them last year, and I made a bunch at home to take with us on this trip (brown, blue, black, white, purple, red, baby pink, hot pink, etc.). One tip I did pick up from Leialoha that I didn't know was to use two balls of yarn at once to make it go much faster...thanks Leialoha!

So this morning was the Susan G. Komen breast cancer walk, and my Mom and I wanted to wear baby pink colored leis for the walk. I had brought one onboard, but luckily I had some yarn in my suitcase so this morning I was out on deck making the other one last minute. It was basically wind some yarn, have a bite of cereal, wind more yarn, etc. I have to say, yarn is like catnip to some people. I had TONS of people coming up to watch or ask me how to make the lei. I referred some of them to Leialoha for the handout, and gave instructions to others. In the end, I finished it just in time!

We did go to the gym this morning, but rather than do the bike or treadmill I knew I was planning on doing the walk. It was 8 laps around the ship, and I am very pleased to note that I was the first one finished! :D I was in second behind another woman until the last lap, when I jogged ahead. I know that it doesn't matter at all where you finish, but I promised I would try to win it for my beloved aunt (who was my best friend), as she lost her battle against breast cancer. We did it NeeNie!!!!

After that, I jogged into trivia where I met my spouse and mother in law. We ended up getting 18 right (hmph, I think I was pretty good knowing Muhammed Ali's name was Cassius Clay, but I didn't know his middle name!). After trivia, I ran upstairs, took a shower and grabbed my ukulele.

Then, I had the last ukulele lesson of the cruise, and since I'm opting for hula in the show, that is the last group session I have for ukulele. I'm on my own now...

After ukulele, around 1205pm, I ran to the restaurant as I liked the lunch menu. Mom and I were able to get a table (two only, please, no sharing) and had the chicken club sandwich and vanilla Napoleon pastry. The sandwich was good (although much smaller than the Clubs I'm used to) and the pastry was out of this world! I highly recommend you all get the Napoleon if you get the chance. It was very flaky and the vanilla cream was quite tasty.

We then ran over to hula in the Vista lounge at 1pm. We learned one last new song, "Hanelei Moon," and reviewed "Hawaiian Lullaby" and "Aloha Oe" for the show. Once hula finished, I came down here to check my email and after this, I plan on finding a secluded corner to play my ukulele before going to afternoon trivia.

I think we are opting for pizza tonight, as it is Chef's Dinner (my absolute least favorite menu on Princess). Talk to you all later!

Looks like a nice day to be out on the deck (see bridgecam below) and the ocean seems relatively calm.

There were lots of kids taking the uke classes when we went (I watched while either the girl or her dad were participating). We bought our uke months before the cruise at a music store here and took it onboard along with hubby's guitar. I don't think anyone should feel intimidated with these classes. And look, with the OP, she has been bitten by the ukelele bug. Someone on my sailing got interested in South Pacific dancing and now participates in a dance troupe. Just to go this is a cruise that can get you interested in Hawaiian culture easily.

It's so fun experiencing this cruise through WM and the others reporting in. Mahalo so much!

Is there anyway you could get me a handout on how to make the eyelash leis? We just got back from the Golden (the cruise before you) .. and it wasn't taught on our cruise, unless I just missed it. I did buy one from Leialoha and I did the hula lessons, and the 'Aloha Oe' show...such fun!

Thank you for taking us on your journey - I'm loving it

I'll be leaving on the Dec 6 cruise

Someone mention buying a ukelele in Hilo - do you know if they can be mailed back home from the store?

Do you know what dry cleaning prizes are? or know where to find them?

Maui Tender - got some old bad knees, are the tenders easy to get into?

Much climbing up or down? or just step in type thing?

Are you using the wi fi in your cabin, or going to the cafe?

Any trouble using it in your cabin?

Mahalo
