I will be in Manzanillo during the lunch time -- does anyone have suggestions of a good place to eat? Is it safe to eat in Mexico (I've heard such horror stories). Suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, it is very safe to eat in Mexico. I used to avoid the street vendors but now I eat there and have never had a problem. However, you might want to stick to actual restaurants.

I woldn't recommend staying downtown as it is crowded and noisy, but if you are staying in the downtown port area, eat at the Hotel Colonial. Very pretty old old hotel, nice servers and good food. We stop there everytime we find ourselves in that area.

If you go to the main drag (Blvd de Madrid) there are plenty of options form Burger King to Dairy Queen to Dominos! If you want something a bit more local, my very favorite place is El Fogon. It is like a little oasis in the city. The Adobo chicken is wonderful and my husband loves the pork leg, I have attached a photo of the chicken, click it to see a lager view. yummy...

If you want a beach view, try Bigotes II or El Caribe. Further down the road is Juanitos- they have free wi-fi if you are bringing a laptop and they have excellent hamburgers and french fries!

Check out our most recent blog at www.livinginmexico.posterous.com there are a couple posts on Aug 11 that show downtown and the Colonial, on Aug 6 there is a post with rare and exotic finds!

Could you give cross streets to these restaurants, or what they are close to. Thanks.

I agree with the recommendations by Karfest. Been to Manzanillo many times and usually rent a car there so I don't recall the cross streets - just along the main drag of Blvd Miguel de la Madrid.

Juanitos is Blvd Miguel de la Madrid km14 in Santiago area of Manzanillo (north part of the city). We like breakfast there and dinner at Bigotes (orange building on the beach side of the blvd).

Is there a place to rent a car near the Manzanillo cruise ship terminal?

I don't know about rental cars downtown, I haven't seen a place but that doesn't mean there isn't one! If you are only there for the day, rent a taxi- driving in Manzanillo can be an adventure if you aren't familiar with the side lanes and turning left from the far right lane:eek: Taxis are plentiful and cheap, you will be able to find a driver who is willing to drop you off and wait or just drive you around all day.

As far as cross streets, I have no idea...directions are always given by saying what it is near. For instance, Dairy Queen, Burger King, and Starbucks are right across from Wal-Mart. El Fogon is near Soriana (a big supermarket- it's worth a stop there) Bigotes II is on the beach in Las Brisas, Juanitos is in Santiago, a "suburb" of Manzanillo. Taxi drivers will know all of these places.

I am not a Wal-Mart shopper in the US, but we have a beachfront Wal-Mart in Manzanillo and I find myself there quite a bit. If you are just bumming around and not doing any beach activities, have the taxi drop you at Wal-Mart, from there you can go to a number of stores but I will warn you that Manzanillo is a working city, not a tourist town like Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan so we are not known for our shopping.

There is also a casino,Juega, Juega, that is located in the Office Max/Subway mall between Wal-Mart and Soriana, on the beach side of La Madrid. I have never won anything but it is a fun experience. People in Manz are very friendly and my lack of Spanish has never been a problem. I do carry a pocket dictionary but there is usually someone around who speaks English and will point you in the right direction.

If any of you will be in Manzanillo during the first few weeks in January, let me know and I can be your guide!

Personally, I am rather shocked that you don't want to be in Green Bay during the month of January :D.

Last year we spent the month of January in Manzanillo. When we got on the plane in Manz it was 87 degrees. When we landed in Milwaukee it was -10 with a -20 wind chill. Now THAT was a shock to the system!!!

If we could make a living down there I would be happy to leave the frozen tundra for good:)

We have eaten at El Vaquero on the outskirts of Santiago and the food and margaritas were excellent. We will be back in Manzanillo this month on the Radiance and plan to return there for a leisurely lunch.

Just wondered if anyone could give us an idea of what the taxi fare should be in pesos to go from downtown Manzanillo (outside of the immediate port area) to El Vaquero, or to go to downtown Santiago?

Thank you.
