Casey2 Posted January 8, 2005 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2005 We will be on the Radiance of the Seas in September. We were considering doing the Mendenhall Glacier Float Trip in Juneau. Has anyone done this excursion? Any feedback would be welcome. Star Princess 11/04 Carnival Victory 7/
Budget Queen Posted January 9, 2005 #2 Share Posted January 9, 2005 This is one tour I NEVER recommend. You get only a brief distant view of the glacier, rest of trip is trees and back yards. My opinion only, money is far better spend elsewhere.
kimbtech Posted January 9, 2005 #3 Share Posted January 9, 2005 We did a boat cruise out of Juneau during which we say lots of sealife (seals and a humpback and her calf) which ended at the Glacier. We thoroughly enjoy this excursion. The glacier was shrouded in fog when we got there, and within 20 minutes cleared to reveal it's beauty. We were then bussed back to Juneau where we enjoyed a salmon bake. We have a great time!

Star Princess 11/04 Carnival Victory 7/03 Not sure how much this tour is going for these days but for not much more, I imagine, you can go whale watching and see the glacier then or plan something else and then go out to the glacier itself via shuttle. We did the float trip eons ago when they spent more time in the lake but they no longer do..
Casey2 Posted January 9, 2005 Author #5 Share Posted January 9, 2005 Thanks for the advice. We probably will go whale watching. I just wanted to consider all the options before we made a decision.
scubaRN Posted January 9, 2005 #6 Share Posted January 9, 2005 I was born and raised in Juneau and lived a mile from Mendenhall Glacier. I recommend you do the hiking trail on your own, and then go to the salmon bake. Even Juneauites do that at least once in awhile. You will see quite a few glaciers fairly close just on the cruise ship. At Mendenhall there is a visitor's center with a couple of nice walking trails available. Hope that is helpful.
