:) I just bought a Amazon Kindle today to take on our cruise on Dec.12th. Cant wait for it to get here!!!!!! I vowed to make this cruise a Veg-cation.:p

You are going to love your Kindle!! Hubby travels all over the world, so there is a lot of his time spent in the air and in airports! He said it was the best xmas gift I had ever given him in the almost 34 years we have been married. I was amazed that its so easy to read it even in bright sun! Have fun and enjoy it! Remember there are so many free download, they keep changing it from some to another, so if you see a freebie that you want..get it when you see it :)

Thanks for the answer regarding lights, that just saved me several books worth of $$$. I ordered today, so my Kindle and a gorgeous red leather cover will be mine... Now, I'll spend the time waiting for it to be delivered coming up with a name for her... him? it?

Living in Australia we chose the kindle because it was the first to introduce an international version.

My wife and I both have a kindle, in the past we cruised with about 10 books and now we don't.

When we buy a book we can elect to both have a copy or just one of us, for the same price. It is downloaded without any human action - it just arrives. If we remove a book and want to revisit it at a lated date, we can download again without cost.

On board, it's like being in a private club, other Kindle users acknowledge you, and it's kinda nice.

Funny you should mention that! That was something I noticed on my last cruise in particular. I met someone who has since become a great friend. It is like an exclusive club on cruises, but I found my December to be slightly LESS exclusive as there were more Kindle owners than six months before that. Such fun!

Does a Kindle use batteries? what kind? how many? and how many hrs (approx) do you get from a set? thank you, carol

Hey Carol. I bought one for my DW last Christmas. It has an internal battery. Charges from the wall, or from a computer.

Woo hoo, Kit the Kindle arrived just minutes ago. She's charging up and already has the books I ordered from Amazon ready to read. Now, while charging finishes, I'll go finish the DTB I started yesterday.

Hi Amy - how long did it take to Amazon to del? thanx..........carol

I bought my Kindle in early March and took it on Explorer of the Seas. OMG I love it. I ordered a light because if I read in bed at night, even with our lights on (they're recessed can lights) it's hard to read the text. I love how I can read it in direct sunlight with no glare at all. I have only bought a couple of books, including the bible, but I have ordered several free books and I'm always looking for more. I have never met anyone who owns one who doesn't love it. My DH loves the idea of a real book, but this is alot easier to carry than several paperback books are.

I ordered it April 20, using the free shipping, so it took one week. It came from Arizona to California.

Thank You Amy - only cuz we leave for alaska May 10 and of course I always wait til the last min... so if I order tomorrow, I should be fine - I just don't want to cut it too close. I just got something today from Amazon and they said they were going to send it out the 26th but I know they sent it earlier. amazon has always been very good about getting things out in time, unless it's BO'd then they notify me.

I haven't heard anything negative about it either - thank you for sharing. carol

Carol, I would suggest you peruse and select books to your Wish List on Amazon at your leisure and then when your Kindle arrives you can just go to your wish list, transfer them to an order and buy them. They download almost instantly.

That way you do not have to spend time deciding what books to buy if your time is short and other things like packing have to be done.

So I have been looking at the Kindle and the other types out there. I like the Kindle the best I think. But I am wondering if anyone know if you can get ebooks from a library for them. I was looking at my library online site and it seems it might only work for the Nook. I don't think I want that, but would like to get books from the library. I like to read, ALOT, and can't afford to buy as many books as I read. I do buy alot, but can't afford to buy everything.

This was almost a dealbreaker for me. I thought when I ordered my Kindle that I'd be able to borrow library books to read on it, but learned during Kindlewatch that the format would not work. I had almost decided to return it as soon as I received it. But, I joined a Yahoo group called Kindlekorner and have found other sites with free books. You can, technically, reformat a library book to read on your Kindle, but it requires an illegal tampering with the formatting software, so I'm not going there.

i love to read too - since I had my retina detachment, I have been buying the big print books which cost twice as much as the regular print books - so I am excited about the Kindle having a big font - a lady at the doctor's office yesterday was showing our retina specialist her Kindle with the big font and she was very excited about it - she was around 95 and the cutest young lady ever... carol

Shoot! I was afraid that I was actually reading it correctly and I would not be able to. I guess I will look into that Yahoo Group and also look more at the Nook. I really like the Kindle with its download internet or whatever it is, built in. I wonder if the Kindle will change in future models?

I love my nook... I recommend going into a store and actually playing with one... something you can't do with kindle...

nook allows you to read library books and even loan your purchased books to other nook owners...

nook also has free WiFi and 3G available... you can read entire e-books for free while you are in a Barnes and Noble store... it has a web browser... I can play sudoku... I can turn pages with a flick of my finger, similar to an iPod - no buttons to push for page turns... I can enlarge the font, change the font, add bookmarks... I can listen to music...

If you have problems with your nook, you have an actual store to go to for help... If they can't fix it in the store, they'll exchange it right there... no shipping the device off and waiting for it to come back...

Something else to be aware of... Amazon is experiencing some backlash from publishers... For example, that new Nora Roberts book that just came out on Tuesday - not available for kindle... In fact, anything published by Penguin Putnam since the beginning of the month and going forward will not be available for kindle... that's a lot of big name authors...

For me, the issue is content availability... right now, Amazon is having problems with that... I trust the folks who have been selling books for years... some of the best books I've read were recommended to me by my trusty bookstore...

My husband got his kindle for Christmas. He looked for over a year before deciding on that model vs the Nook.

You can listen to some music on the kindle. There are tons of free books out there for kindle.

I will comment that his kindle failed in early March. I dreaded the phone call to Amazon. Within five minutes of explaining our situation, the rep agreed it needed service. (This was a Saturday). He shipped us a brand new kindle, which arrived on Monday, and had a prepaid shipping to return the old one. FABULOUS customer service!

So with the free WiFi, do I have to be in WiFi hot spots to use it? Admittedly I don't understand how that works. But from what I have read, with the Kindle WiFi you can be anywhere and download.

Am starting to think the Nook is what I will get instead. The library downloads are kind of a deal breaker for me. Can't afford to buy all that I read.:o
