Totrola Baths at Virgin Gorda need a tour???

Hello Everyone:

We will be in Tortola in abou 4 weeks, we do have a full day 9:00 am - 6:00pm. We would like to take the ferry to Virgin Gorda to see the baths and then still be able to spend some time investigating Tortola.

Advice is greatly appreciated.

Where is the ferry from the pier?

How long should we allow for the baths, is there a beach near, if so are there resturants, loungers avail for rent????

What is the best beach for simple sunning on Tortola? What is the best way to get around from the ferry stop? Should we rent a taxi to take us on an island tour or go straight to a beach.

Just my husband and myself, no kids this trip. We would like to see the sites, but low key and no hustle and bustle of a scheduled excursion.

Thanks in advance for the help.

We just got back.To go to Virgin Gorda-- When you get off the ship walk out to the road, turn left and walk about 15 minutes to the red-roofed ferry building. IGNORE all of the salesmen on the way! There are 2 ferry companies, Speedy's and Smiths ,with slightly different schedules. Both leave at around 9 am so be sure to be there by then. We arranged to come back at 12:30 because we also wanted to go to a beach on Tortola. However we decided to have lunch on the ship and then were too lazy to leave it again so I can't tell you about the beaches there. Try the "Ports of Call" board--Caribbean other for Tortola info.

I agree with the above post. You have plenty of time to do Virgin Gorda and the Baths on your own and MUCH cheaper. We did it in November, spent the entire day there, with Ferry, lunch, private tour it cost about $60 for both of us for everthing....all the info you need can be found in Ports of Call room Good luck!!

..just to clarify for you, the Baths are a beach...huge rock formations on a beach....yes, there is a restaurant.....climb the path up to the top of the hill...there is a nice gift shop and a restaurant right beside it...they make a great rum punch.

we spent a week on Virgin Gorda...it is a fantastic place.

enjoy

Speedy's will sell you a taxi ride to the Baths along when you buy your ferry ticket. You can also request to rent a car from Speedy's and they will take you to the rental location when you get to Virgin Gorda. Going out to the copper mine and the drive out to Gun Creek is beautiful if you get a car. You can call at the north ferry dock's (Gun Creek or Leverick Bay ) and a boat will come get you to have lunch at Saba Rock (look it up on the internet). There is a pay phone at Gun Creek. The number is on a flyer at the dock or get it off the internet before you go.

The best beaches on Tortola are on the other side of the island from Road Town. The most popular (and crowded) is Cane Garden Bay. It does take a few minutes to get their by taxi over the mountain. Brewer's Bay is much more secluded, but if the baths aren't crowded on Virgin Gorda, to be honest, that was a very beautiful beach as well. You will love it. Do not just stay near the cruise ship in Road Town. You will never see how beautiful the BVI is.

However you decide to go -- The Baths of Virgin Gorda is worth the effort!

There's a very helpful thread on the Ports Board with lots of information AND a great map (very detailed) of The Baths ( wish we'd had this our first trip there):
