Anna: Thank you so much for sharing your pictures. I have gotten through the 1st three albums. I have been looking for an hour and a half. Got to get to bed now for work tomorrow but I will finish looking at them tomorrow. We are on the 3/27/05 Infinty to Hawaii from Ensenada so I am VERY interested in your pics. Thanks again for taking the time to share them.

By the way, how was the weather and seas going over?

Hi Harry and Anna.

I love your pictures, you had a real great trip.

We plan to cruise to Hawaii in March 2006 and also hope to make lots of photos there. As you attended a luau in Maui I assume the ships was there all day? Ours seems to leave already in the afternoon.

Did you rent a car before departure? Did you drive yourself at all the islands? If not how did you organise this? Would you mind sharing this with us?

Ine,

Answering your question about our transportation, we never made advanced accomodations. We simply approached one of the taxi drivers lined up and sitting at each port. We told them how long we would need them and the places we wanted to go. They quoted us a price and we generally talked them into an extra hour for free. The prices per hour are pretty much set but you can dicker for the free hour I just mentioned. The price quoted doesn't vary by the amount of passengers. In other words the price remains the same whether there's two or six people in your party (keeping in mind that it's always nice to tip).

As for Maui, our ship was there two days and we went to the luau the evening of the first day. If I remember correctly, the luau started around 7pm. We took a taxi from the port to the luau and then hailed a taxi to go back to the port.

By the way, hiring a taxi by the hour for a five hour island tour is actually more reasonable than what we were originally prepared to pay AND we got to see far more than we would have if we had booked through the ship.

Gary and Anna...Thank you so much for those beautiful pictures..we have enjoyed Hawaii several times and these pictures really were great!!Especially on a cold winters day in upstate NY. What kind of camera do you have?? I am also glad to know that there is someone out there like me as excited about the volcano...when we flew over in July it was one of the greatest life experiences!!!

The walk up Diamond Head is a favorite of mine as well..but it was much easier 20 years ago..when there were no lights in the tunnel!!!...Aloha!!!:)

Ine...we rented cars this past summer when we cruised Hawaii...we had prearranged before leaving home but what Gary and Anna did sounds great too!!!:)

In regards to the make and model of the camera I used to take these pics, it's my beater camera (a Nikon Coolpix 4300). We have a much better quality Nikon than this one but the major drawback on the more expensive camera is that it's muchhhhh larger in size. This time around, I wanted to carry something extremely lightweight and more compact.

Go back and check out the link for the port of Hilo. Counting from the top, go to the eighth pic - the unindentified flying object mysteriously shows up in the top left corner of this sunset photo which is appropriately entitled (drumroll please ...) "UFO".

Giggling impishly,

Anna

Thank you for your pictures and review. We got back yesterday (1/24) from our POA cruise and your website helped us plan with our cruise. In Kauai and Hilo we took local island tours. The Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour (Hilo) was one of the high points of our cruise. Kona we walked around town & rode the free shuttles. Rented a car in Maui on the drive over to Lahaina we stopped at a lookout point and saw whales. Our Old Lahaina luau was rained out. Mike & CJ

  • 2 months later...

I'm so green with envy that you got to see the whales! Sadly, we arrived in Hawaii a couple weeks too early to experience the wonderment of watching their arrival. Do you have any good pics that you could share with me? If so, feel free to forward them to my e-mail address (unless, of course, you have a link you could share with everyone).

Thanks!

Anna & Gary
